- An intentionally exaggerated theory I've had coming for a few weeks, and reworked to fit Nintendo's update announcement.
Obviously not intended to be cannon, but an interesting conspiracy that can be reached by connecting various dots (having to state the obvious because of some rude commenters).

1. If Luigi is Cappy, then who is Tiara? Cappys sister? Mario and Luigi dont have a sister
2) The fact that luigi is balloon boy is just hilarious
3) Ok the Galaxy one kinda makes sense, but they even explain in the game that the universe is infinite, therefore there is an infinite number of luigis, marios, toads...
All of them are real, for their respective worlds
4) And if Mario DID die in the fall to Bonneton, its impossible for him to have a 1-up mushroom, as there are no extra lives in odyssey, just coins, and as we see when we start the game, mario starts with 0 coins, AND its impossible to get a GAME OVER

Hold up, you said something about when you beat the game, Luigi says his final goodbyes as Cappy since he’s fulfilled his purpose to protect Mario. In the Mini E3, they stated that Balloon World is available after you beat the game... Perhaps Luigi was set free since he fulfilled his purpose, and Cappy is actually another Bonneter once you beat the game?
In Super Mario 64DS if Wario loses hat, Toad gives him back and says 'I thought it's yours because of.. Distinctive aroma. You should really wash this thing sometimes'

Good theory and all, but I do not see much explaining. When would Luigi find the cap kingdom when he “Died”? Plus, Luigi’s clothes are thinner and made for Luigi’s body. ONE thing you didn’t look at, the SIZE of the clothes, mario and luigi are definitely NOT the same size so why would the “real” luigi’s clothing fit his brothers body shape? (also wario’s clothes would be sagging on mario and waluigi’s clothes wouldn’t fit at all)

I believe after super Mario 3D world Luigi went and talked to Mario. Mario later then tell Luigi that he is going in a new journey all over the world. Luigi simply accepts there for leaving toad and peach (Rosalina left back to space) peach due to being left alone with toads got kidnapped by Bowser. In the first cutscene in Mario Odyssey I believe that cutscene did have Luigi in it but flew separate with Mario and went separate ways. And thus Luigi found the balloons in bonetone before Mario was even in there.
Luigi flew to new don't city because he didn't need any power moons for his flight. And that's my theory

Yeah this is a bit far fetched. The costumes are simply references. Mario is not this dark. Luigi wouldn’t be dead. If the costumes were taken they would not fit Mario 😑.
