- Alright, I got a request for it, so let’s do it. Now I grew up in Florida and this stuff is almost more common to drink than coca-cola, but for those who haven’t had it, this drink is a very intensely flavored orangy-citrus drink with a huge kick of caffeine. Apparently, the reason this stuff is so strongly flavored is due to the fact that it was originally designed as a mixer for moonshine, so let’s get started.

Yup. I was raised on this stuff. Often hear stories of how my dad used to drip it in my ears when I had ear infections, or soak gauze in it before applying to out cuts.

400mg of caffeine is the daily maximum? I drink 300 mg at a time several times a day. About 2000-3000 mg a day.

@@Ashh602 Yeah well I've been doing that for more than 10 years straight now and haven't noticed any negative effect really. I mean, I only sleep a few hours a day, but that is sort of the point of ingesting so much caffeine, so I don't really consider that a negative effect.

You really should have used caffeine anhydrous powder instead of crushing up the tablets. The tablets are full of fillers that will mess with the taste.

I think the risk of people copying that without using the proper equipment like milligram scales and ending up in the hospital is too big. That's the reason for the disclaimer, people do that, eyeball it, and end up in the hospital
I used to cut my caffeine pills in half and yes some brands are FOUL tasting. Grab the powder on amazon.
@@nicfab1I used to mix pure caffeine into orange juice every morning and only had a scale that would read in half grams, it's not hard to eyeball if you can get some idea of however much you're adding looks like. Not to mention how horrible something with 5 times the intended amount of caffeine would taste. I think most people who end up hospitalized didn't really care how much they adding.

As a server for many years in restaurants, whenever I get kids that order mountain dew, and if we don't have it I use 1 part lemonade 3 parts sprite. Tastes like mountain dew.

in france we have something similar to montain dew . we call it limonade but it is caffeine free (and can be organic). so it is closer to 7up or sprite, and sometime we mix it with a light colored beer like a bud, it taste delicious.
In the UK that is a Shandy.

It actually *is* a great mixer for shine! I live in Appalachia, my family have distilled for generations, this is the only time we drink this poison! (Ironic, we literally distill alcohol. xD)
The original Mountain Dew was actually just a lemon lime soda similar to sprite or 7up. It wasn't until the brand was bought by another company that it got its modern taste and color.
When you peel citrus with a knife. Put down the fruit on a flat surface, hold the blade as close to the surface as possible and cut the fruit lightly. Than turn the fruit while it's stays on one spot. A bit difficult and gosh it sounds even worse, but you'll end up with a nice and thin layer with minimal bitter white stuff.

Also make sure to be careful because citrus oil is HIGHLY flammable, especially when it sprays out of a peel as it's bending. It's shockingly flammable.
The great fire of Citron in 789 can attest to this. Millions died after a lemon caught fire.

Yoo I'd love it if you could make a recipe for Gatorade G2!! Or Gatorade in general, if G2 is just Gatorade watered down. Where I live now I can only find Powerade or no-name stuff, and they're all wayyyy too strong for me, nowhere near as refreshing (or tasty) as G2 was! Could also be a little nostalgia talking there tho :P Nice vid, I like the method of using the sugar to extract the essential oils! And an absolute wow on just grinding caffeine tablets, ahah.
Gatorade is just cool-aid (Flavored sugar water or sugar substitute) with electrolytes added in to help water absorption (they use salt). I broke the recipe down as lazily as possible. Get 3 packets of koolaid, add in 56 teaspoons of sugar (do your own conversion to cups I was lazy) add 440mg of salt (Again google is your friend) add 140mg of potassium and fill with warm water up to the gallon mark.... chill and serv
@@EC-dz4bq Ahah, nice idea!! Tho I'm out of the states and they don't sell koolaid here either. A completely from scratch recipe might be better for that, which this channel is definitely known for. Tho I suppose at least some koolaid packets wooouuuld be easier to get delivered than anything else.

I feel like, its one of those things you wouldn't notice unless you went and actively looked for them. But then again, could also be a regional thing. Not really sure. Best of luck
@@EC-dz4bq Ahh, I can't find anything like that, no! What's more common here is liquid punch mixes that you dilute with more water? Like mixing it 1 to 5. They tend to be artificially sweetened. I suppose, if I just mixed one of those up to a strength I liked, and then added the salt and potassium, that might be alright? What sort of potassium would you use, potassium chloride? What sort of places can you find that stuff in? I'm guessing most easily on Amazon, ahah.
@@bittersweet5161 Yeah we have those here too, can't really stand them. (I hate artificial Sweeteners). But then again, I don't really like koolaid either. (Loved it as a kid) I am just not big on sweets. I love sour, and just a insane amount of lemon juice and water/tea fixes that for me.

The brominated vegetable oil increases the specific gravity of the citrus oils to the s.g. of water so it doesn't all float to the top
Use a little hot water to pull the citrus sugar out when you are ready to take the peel out.... Same as state fair lemonade.

Never in my life would I have guessed that real fruits could have mimicked this flavor.
The lethal dose of caffeine for adults is around 200mg per kg (2.2 pounds) of weight, even though mild intoxication and negative effects such as anxiety and physical discomfort can be present depending on personal sensitivity starting at 250-300mg in a single sitting. so if one is accustomed to drinking coffee all day long 400mg can be acceptable for a day long drinking even though on the higher side, I wouldn't personally go over 200mg.

Many of you might not know, but until very recently, Canadian Mountain Dew had NO caffeine. I used to love it until they made that change, now it just tastes way too off.

The first caffeine tablets were called NoDoz. I was a young teen and thought taking or a dozen or so would be fun.. and it was... for awhile. Def gauge your sensitivity before adding that!

Not from US but I tried it locally twice. One bottle was from Hungary the other from Switzerland. Both tasted like sugar water with a tiniest hint of citrus.

The country that I live only has two varieties of Mountain Dew both of which contain lots of caffeine which makes me anxious when I drink it. But I love the taste of MD and don't want to give it up. For real try some baja blast with some vanilla vodka and some 151 or black heart rum. Super smooth and one glass is all you will need. I prefer the black heart 93 proof rum myself.

2 Large Navel Oranges
1 Lemon
1 Lime
handful of raisin
12 oz frozen orange juice concentrate (No preservative except ascorbic acid)
12 oz frozen lemonade concentrate (No preservative except ascorbic acid)
12 oz frozen limeade concentrate (No preservative except ascorbic acid)
3 1/2 pounds clover honey
1 gallon spring water
D47 Yeast
Yeast nutrient optional

The purpose is keep the drink flavors and carbonated water from separating. It is from a soybean source.

The LD50/50 (lethal dose for 50% of the people 50% of the time) for caffeine is almost 4 grams dude... 40 to 50 mg is not even one soda. Also, to put it in perspective, a cup of coffee is typically between 70 and 120 mg.

Dude, you've got to try really hard to OD on caffeine. The LD50 is line 150-200mg per kilogram. 400mg is for someone that has probably never even had a coffee before.
A healthy adult could intake over a gram of caffeine and be perfectly fine; you’d be uncomfortable, and probably have some mild hypertension, but nothing dangerous.
Good taste. No good oranges (ugly) at the store so I used clementines (6) since they are smaller. Next hopefully there will be good oranges. It took 5 tbls of concentrate per cup of soda for the taste. Good but I should have used a few more clementines. Thank you for the video. Outstanding. Subscriber now.
If you steep those rinds in alcohol you can get more flavor. Evaporate with heat THEN add water and sugar.

OK, 23 seconds in and already have to stop to comment. Dew is a lemon-lime drink with very little "orangey" flavor, and the caffeine content is always exaggerated. It has only a little bit more than Coke or Pepsi.

Yeah mountain dew has 54mg of caffeine while coke has 39mg it has a way less then Pepsi which if i can remember is 70mg
