I am actually so disturbed at people's comments saying they actually don't find Alec utterly disgusting as a character. It's quite simple you see, HE RAPED HER. End of argument, end of story, no debate, thank you.
Alec D'Urberville was a disgusting character who deserved what he got, but Angel Clare was no saint either. His thinking he could mess around with a filthy whore in London for a couple of days was "forgiveable" because I guess he felt that's "what men do", but Tess's sin, which was being raped as she was sleeping and then getting pregnant, well that was completely unforgiveable! Alec's foul treatment of Tess and leaving her to go to Brazil caused her just as much pain and anguish as what Alec did to her. Angel was a complete hypocrite (from telling Mercy there is no God) he was an atheist as well. As Jesus said, "Judge not, and you will not be judged".
Both male characters in the story are deeply flawed. Alec is a rapist who confuses lust with love. Angel is a hypocrite who wants someone pure who loves him unconditionally yet he himself is incapable of doing the same for his wife. Alec, ironically, seems to accept everything about Tess. Both men are selfish. Tess is only a trophy for their own self approval. Why are some of her struggles still feel quite relevant today
This series was just too good. Everything was right. The characters the setting the lighting the script. Everything was phenomenal. Gemma was the perfect girl for this role. She is such an effortless beauty.
“There are some readers who prefer Alec’s directness and honest amorality to Angel’s fastidious emotions, his hypocritical liberal views, and his peculiar nastiness to Tess when he finds that she is not a virgin.”
Both men were awful different ways. In terms of this miniseries, there was a far more interesting dynamic with Tess and Alec. The actors played off of each other very well.
he fed her strawberries, paid her wages, showed her off, led her on, laid her in the woods, had sex with her and then dumped her. its a form of rape isnt it. when she got pregnant and the baby died he didnt support her. he regreted it, then tried to marry her. he took advantage of her being poor, young, and naive. but he felt sorry and wrecked with guilt afterwards. she felt used. my teacher had to ask us at 17... is that rape? i had to say yes, because she called the baby sorrow. they had a debate about it. a kid in my school was raped. its form of sexual abuse its not rape. "taking advantage". lol
It really is inappropriate - Hans Matheson is a babe but he's still playing a character that rapes a teenage girl. The music presenting this as a seduction....YECH
Virginia Rodríguez I’m an avid reader. I’ve read many Victorian novels and I’ve enjoyed many of them, but Tess is sooo boring. I don’t know what’s up with Thomas Hardy. The story is interesting, but the writing makes me fall asleep in one minute.
I think that the character of Alec is not imaged truly enough. So, Alec might be seem so in love with Tess and all the time thinks her and wants to take care of her. So, he looks like so sympathetic also I liked him. However, he shouldn't have been portrayed like this. He most loves himself and he is a womaniser man. In this series, he quite seems innocent but he is not at all. 💔
I really liked Alecs character but I knew that he was going to rape her since I read the plot before. I thought I would dislike him a lot but instead I really liked him. It is not okay what he did though. But what Angel did was more awful to me. You can say what you want but that doesn't change this for me. I have to say that I also didn't like Tess that much... But not that I would wish her or any woman to get raped, so please chill before picking up a pitchfork.
Los dos nunca lá mereceram;Foram hombres abusadores, hipócritas e covardes.... Tess és una heroína trágica que só encontrou consolo quando foi para Deus;
Honestly, I did too Jennifer...and I know, he raped her...but there was something so cruel about how Angel left her despite something SO completely out of her control. Alec was honest about himself. He never professed to be good but I believe in his own way, he truly adored her. Still, it doesn't excuse the rape but...I never liked Angel.
this is what i feel too. alec is not a good person by any means. he rapes her. he's vile, arrogant, vain.. but he always helped her many times and he seemed to really care about her. i think he even loved her in his own twisted way. angel was always such a passive character. he loved her but left her for something that wasn't even tess fault

See, what happened is terrible, everybody knows but if you think carefully, she was better with Alec, he was her first and only, he fell in love with her, he apologized.....just saying she would have been happier than with her childish husband if she has become Alec's wife intead of a mistress
+Heaven355 Is this book about a love story?! I used to think that it was Tess Of The Dobermans and that Tess was the leader of a group of stray dogs! It would be far better if it was! I did this book at college when I was 23 / 24 years old. I hated the bit about their hands getting stuck together in soap! It made me want to puke! My favourite author is William McGonagall, as his writing I can understand! All My Poems Are Shit!!! Among my favourite books are, - The Mr Men books by Roger Hargreaves, Exploring The Earth and Moon by Patrick Moore and the 1986 RAC Guide Book by the RAC. My favourite Beatles' album is Please, Please Me from 1963. I know that Nelson's Column in London is 169ft high. I like Fish and Chips. I have learning difficulties.

I agree with you actually he is a a monster and Hans matheson portrated him very well

Not only that but he also literally ruined her life until the very end

Well said
Really I appreciate this
well said ... the really ironic thing is a man wrote this story yet it was a ballsy movement for a man in his era...
Tess is better off alone. No one deserves her
Yes ...

I definitely think Alec was worse cuz HE RAPED HER. Angel was a dick too. But Alec .. no
Just finished this show last night. Omg I cried for her. She did not deserve to die. She suffered so much. 😢
Where to download this from?
Where did you find that?
Actors in this movie literally lived the life of the characters.
Gemma is love personified! So sweet, so charming!🌸

He did not have sex with her in he woods..he raped her while she slept in this film and it's heavily implied in the book
Tess💜 So lovely, charming and innocent! 🥺
All the men in this book are CRAP! Poor Tess 😢
Whatever your comments are, the writing was brilliant
Alec. A shadow in Tess´life and the true reason of her bitterness and death. Like Liteunant Clarke for Mary Bryant.
Winter 2002...
I was bewitched, enchanting, compelled ?
Summer 2015 ...
I am still yet....probably always and forever...
Ahhh my fave classic story
Alec raped her...Angel was a coward, Tess suffered so much...she dont deserve that
My favorite book and film ❤❤❤
It's one of my favourite movies ever.
Very nicely done!
No one can be Tess except Nastassija kinski
what the hell
does that atrocious music
have to do with this beauty of a movie????
I couldn't agree more. The trailer is one of the worst I've seen for a series of this caliber.
I'd rather watch the movie 100 times than read the book again.
me absolutely too
I'd rather remove my own appendix with a soup spoon than listen to the horrible music track in this video. Jesus!

Kinski’s Tess is the best ever.

Не то. Настасья Кински в роли Тэсс лучше всех. По сюжету должна быть красавицей, а эта актриса - серая мышка.
