  • UPDATE: The loud highway noise is gone! Turns out it was a bad bearing that I'd had since I bought the Jeep. It's gone now, and the Jeep is nice and quiet on the highway.
    Lots of talking in this video!
    I explain my reason for getting my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) Overland. I spent a lot of time choosing, and went with it over many other options.
    There's nothing wrong with the other options, this was just the best vehicle for me and my budget!

    Just bought a 2005 Limited 4x4 with the hemi, absolutely decked out with all the options. Navigation, rear entertainment, heated seats/mirrors, leather, adjustable pedals, etc.... It is in excellent shape, minus a dented rear bumper from last owner backing up to a trailer incorrectly. Picked it up for $4,000 cash private party.
    Your video helped alot in my decision, and the price was just unbeatable.

    I have a 2003 GC Overland (WJ). While on a Jeep Jamboree, I had to take one of my fellow Jeepers to the auto parts store to get something for his CJ7. He was shocked at how well it rode - "This rides better than my mom's Cadillac!" Yet I did as well or better than all of the Wranglers on our trail. And I was on half-worn all-season tires.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The WJs are fantastic - they have the front flex that I lack! I've never actually been in any Wrangler ever, but I've heard they're not as comfortable on the road.

    • @oscaramador4200
      @oscaramador4200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I feel WJ's sit right in between off-road capable and on road handling, maybe a little more towards off-roading. Coil springs all around make them ride really nice compared to older jeeps but the front axle gives them more articulation than WK's. Plus, overland trims come with vari-lok differentials, that alone makes all the difference on the trails.

    I had a 06 Wk for a few years with the 4.7 and qt2 system. Loved it. I’m sure you know, 4xguard is a great company that makes good products for the wk platform. Between the skids, Rick sliders I’d suggest their modular front bumper. It was by far a great purchase. They also make some disconnects for the front. I want to say Rusty’s off-road makes a adjustable trac bar for the rear and adjustable rear control arms. Not to mention if you had the qt2 I think the 10 bolt rear arb makes a diff cover. And Gobi make a rack. So much potential for these models, I’m actually in the market and will find another one day.

    • @RevereOverland

      Are the disconnects worth it? Do you gain much more suspension drop?

    I feel you with the ZJ being rough on the road. When I got my 98 it wandered all over the road like a lost child. I replaced literally everything that connected the axles to the frame and got an alignment and custom made stiffer springs, so it's perfectly manageable now. I routinely do 4.5 hour drives to visit family and have no problems.

      @@RevereOverland My 96 ZJ was just fine on the road, and so is my 98 ZJ. Its all in how to care for them, and keep up with maintenance....the road issues really get bad when you do lifts and oversized heavier tires. My 96 ZJ was offroad far more than it was onroad, I was amazed where the quadra-trac 4WD system would take me without any limited slip or lockers. It had 232k on it when I sold it and its still running around...my 98 ZJ I currently have has selec-trac 4WD and limited slip rear and does just fine and has 157K on it.

      what LSD , WK comes with QT2 or QD2 , QT2 is brake based traction control with open diffs. and QD2 have 3 e lockers works without any braking just diffs. but thats not LSD . it doesnt need flex when it has good traction control it stops wheel thats in air no prob, even better with QD2. hemi is drinker. CRD will have same torque on low revs but will use half diesel.

      scal man my 2010 WK Hemi (160k miles) gets 19mpg with Dobinsons full lift & 32 inch tires. I have no added weight like steel bumpers and rock sliders so that helps. You are right the QD2 is perfect. I had it stock the first year with stock highway tires and still didnt get stuck and with the 4 wheels powered, I got up some steep climbs in 4 lo. Now that its lifted with better tires , I hardly even need to shift 4 lo. The WK is also narrow so fits in tight trails and the wheelbase is also short. These things are awesome.

    If you live in the UK and run a HEMI version of the WK, the smart thing to do was to get it LPG converted. You then get double the range and the running cost of a VW Beetle, I did that in 2014.

    • @dotustm8926

      They got VERY few CRD WK in America. Good news is they had true electric locking front and rear diffs. Altho I will NEVER downplay how well break locking has worked on my Jeep. Bone stock I ran no less then 15MPG in city and often almost reached 21 on the highway. That is Northwest Driving!!! I once towed a enclosed double axle Uhaul smashed full basically uphill for 5hrs. I pulled into destination at 18.7MPG!!!!! tow'haul at 55MPH ofcourse. Blew my mind. Since I have went up to 31" tires, thrown some real stupid amount of weight in armor on the vehicle I could feel the strain on the little V8. I swapped out for 410 gearz, the only option we have for our setup. Brought back loads of power under 55MPH, but the lack luster HP rating on 4.7L leaves it wanting some more passing power on the highway with my setup. I run down the road at ~1900 around 60 with 410's and 31" tires. I get highway 18 if I am lucky anymore. Town is over 13 never touchin 15. I run the programmer tho that holds shifts longer to keep from lugging my older motor. In all conditions my Jeep likes to simply hold a gear for 500-1000 more RPM then stock depending on the gear. ITs a much better shift pattern and also boosts the Tranny pressure so it always a nice firm shift not slipping discs. Down side is our tranny has a baby pressure plate on the valving. A must replace on a Jeep at 50,000 or more miles if your gonna boost the tranny pressure daily driving. I cant be happier with my Jeep, I run this thing hard and put it away wet and its still kicking. For a few options you prob know already. JBA, Rocky-Road are some great places to pickup much needed gear to get shit down with a WK. Lots of tricks to gain clearance/cheap small lifts and your quickly on your way to 31" tires. Super lift 4" is your only choice to go big. Cheapest its been sold in 8yrs is $1900. I believe to this date they are nearly $2100 as the market picks up on WK they wont be lowering the price lol. JBA and UTube can show you our Jeep at 6-8" clearing 35's long armed in the rear wheeling like champions!!!!
      The WK is a rich mans build for sure, but when my friends make fun of my minivan or over priced build. I ask them if they need to borrow my cabin for a little bit while we are snow wheeling for the comfort they are missing in their lives.

    • @RevereOverland

      I have the locking diffs and they're amazing. Sounds as though you do pretty good with gas mileage. Some good advice too - I'll probably be sticking with the Old Man Emu lift, but I definitely need to look at new UCAs. I might add a small spacer to the isolators at some point.

      Revere Overland I feel the same way, that sunk in front end is torturing me. It took me a while to find the perfect XK. I’m considering doing a build series on it, as it is basically stock. Even though my WK (Rocky) isn't QD2, she still is pretty neat and overland-capabale to me :) In terms of reliability, her 3.7l V6 engine has a pretty good reputation of being very reliable, even though her transfer case has no 4 low and no clutch properties (NV140), it's a much more tinier TC and is simpler design than the NV245 and therefore more maintenance free and easier to repair. Rocky has no lift so far so her suspension angles are fine, no oversized tires so her brakes aren't wearing out too quick or malfunctioning from all the momentum and beefier rubber inhibiting proper stopping distance, and the NAG1 Mercedes Transmission is amazing with very silent operation and very smooth shifting. Nice to see you don't regret your choice of having a WK :) It truly has potential as an overland-capable platform

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right about the transmission - it shifts nicer than my 2017 Mazda! I still have the budget boost sitting in my garage, but I can't bring myself to sell it or even give it away. I feel as though it ruins the ride, and don't wish that on anyone!

      Revere Overland I don't really care about ride quality so long as it's not too bouncy 😅. When are you going to be doing that raffle or contest btw for that 2 inch lift? :) Just curious lol. And I noticed in some of the pics of your video the OME lift. How's the difference in ride quality? Minor or major?

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can send it, but it's not good. It should fit in a flat rate box. The OME is so much better than the budget boost. The budget boost gave me a lot of lateral shake both front and rear, which affected the steering. I replaced the front with OME first, which made it better, but the lateral shake didn't go away until I did the rear too.

      I've had mine for 66k miles and has had the "service 4wd system" since day one. I had already read about it so when I test drove it I checked if the 4lo engaged, it did, so I bought it. Traction control also works flawlessly, and I maintain the diffs, transfer case, and transmission myself so I know its neither of those things. Just an annoying service light I guess

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not true. It uses an electronic clutch pack in the front and rear differential that engage automatically when the wheels slip, then disengage seconds later. It’s not the same as the lockers you would find in a Wrangler, although it has a similar end result. You also don’t need to be in 4lo for it to work.

      They just don't behave as well on the roads - it requires more effort and concentration when you have to correct the steering for every bump. The XJs and ZJs are also very small vehicles, and I've seen how you and Brandon pack!! Another great thing about these is that they require very little work - you can pick them up for

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They aren't bad on the highway at all, the trouble is people bash on them lift them put huge tires on them and wonder why they wander all over the road after they spent a day bashing it through rocks, mud, etc...knocking the thing out of alignment which causes them to wander all over the road. My 96 ZJ did fine and my current 98 ZJ does just fine on the highway and extremely comfortable on the highway. They are solid axle trucks practically, so they handle as such, and if you aren't used to driving anything more than a compact to mid-size car on the highway these types of vehicles of course handle different because they ride higher, they're larger, wider, taller, so they are effected by several things, side winds, passing big rigs, etc.
      Another common thing I see is people remove the sway bars in the front and rear because they want more axle articulation, but what they don't realize is it also causes different on-highway manners by removing the sway bars now when you get into a tight turn at higher speeds you feel very unsafe where having the sway bars actually helps keep the vehicle more stable in higher speed maneuvers....best route is sway bar disconnects to keep them in place for those highway trips, but disconnecting them when you wanna go play on the trails...something many vehicles aren't really able to do in stock form, something that the XJ, ZJ, WJ, and WK's are/were great for, take the family to school, work, home, sports, etc. all week, hit the trails on the weekend.

    I also look for the next Overland vehicle and came to the same conclusions. What you get for the price is pretty good. Here in Europe it's called WH not WK, is available with a diesel engine and they're built in Austria by the same plant which build the Mercedes G wagons.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can actually get the diesel engine here too. They're very rare. I tried to find one for the right price, but it wasn't happening! Do they come with a manual/stick shift option in Europe?

    • @Spacemonkeymk1
      @Spacemonkeymk1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much all Autos here in the UK. I don't think there were any WK/WHs in the UK in manual. You got a pretty weird accent- I hear a lot of Brit and maybe a bit Saffa mixed in with the American drawl. I can't place it...? Very interesting..
      Another point I keep hearing is that the European made Chryslers/Jeeps made in Austria are much better built. Yes we have the same cheap and nasty plastic interiors but don't really suffer reliability issues. Except the front suspenion knock on my 300C........

      @RevereOverland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I moved from Norfolk (UK) to Kentucky 8 years ago, which will explain the accent!

      Look into some engine fail years back that was reported, and basically the active cylinder delete was some how related to shut off when the engine was run hard and hot and shut off abruptly. Such a scenario would be if you were driving freeway speeds and pulled into for fuel and shut off without letting idle for a minute or too. Did not make sense at the time either. Top end lubrication maybe? Look there.
