Maybe it's because I grew up in the 70's but I love the masks from that era. I can understand why they evolved as they are definitely better for the goalies, better vision, better ventilation etc. today but the old ones had a certain charm. I love the pic of Dryden about the 1:45 mark, it almost looks like he's taking a nap after all that hard work of standing in his classic pose, as a long life Leafs fan I can say with certainty that he was a huge thorn in the Maple Leafs plans every time they played Les Habs, mind you he was a huge thorn in the plans of any team back then, amazing goalie who commanded and demanded respect.
I guess you never played in a plastic mask as a goalie. It really hurts when a puck hits it. I changed it after the first game for a hand made wired one. I cut wire myself, my father had it welded at the factory he worked for. It was back in 70th in USSR)
When I was a teenager I used to play pick up games at a local outdoor roller hockey rink in the summer when it was like 100 degrees and I would sometimes wear an old school Jason style mask instead because of the heat. It was all good until a puck I didn’t coming rocked me and took a nice chunk of mask with it and split the thing down the middle. Needless to say I always used my real mask after that lol. I actually enjoyed playing with the old style though. The visibility was actually really good if the design was right. It was super light, breathed well, and made moving your head easier. If it wasn’t so dangerous and unprotective I’d honestly consider playing with one. I’m a much younger goalie who’s playing days only ended like 7-8 years ago but I definitely respect the guys that played back then with this gear. Goalies have always been crazy but the ones back then were extra warped
@@vig237 Not surprised Russians were so early to adopt new equipment. The soviets were very forward thinking about the game if hockey. That’s why they were so dominant back then in international comp. Wire cages weren’t used in US/Canada until like 1980. It might seem strange to players from Europe or elsewhere but yeah masks were plastic for a longer time here. That’s just what people in North America played with. Masks weren’t even worn at all until the 60s and it wasn’t until the early 70s they were common.
I've never played ice hockey, but it seems like it took way too long for the goalie face protection designers to realize that the bar style face shield is much better than the Jason/medieval armor style. Better protection, vision, ventilation and just overall comfort for the goalie.
The earlier “classic” style masks were made to be very close fitting so there would be no interference with vision…the goalies looked straight out the eyeholes rather than through a mask. Lack of vision (especially peripheral) was one of the main reasons it took goalies so long to adopt masks (LONG after they had become standard for baseball catchers)
Love the video! One mask I think should be on every compilation though is Patrick Lalime’s ‘Marvin the Martian’ mask... don’t know why, but I just loved that mask!
In my small community, one person as late as the mid 1990s wouldnt wear a mask when we played floor hockey. We didnt use ice pucks, but those orange plastic pucks. Theyre not as heavy as ice pucks, but some shooters here could REALLY shoot that orange puck so fast and hard.
All the early ones look like Leatherface was busy making masks out of body parts. I think it would be scary as hell to run across anybody wearing one of them nowadays. Friday the 13th was right in their choosing of a goalie mask as the face of their movie monster. Definitely the stuff of nightmares.
There were less safety incidents reported with the Vintage style goalie masks. The modern Combo style goalie mask went through many different changes before being declared safe. So in some regards, the older ones are still the best.

Too bad Clint Benedict, of the Montreal Maroons, didn’t keep that first mask he wore for just one game in 1930, 29 years before Jacques Plante put his mask on. Might have been worth some $$$$.

Memories to Ernie Higgins the inventor of the modern mask. His business was in Westwood Massachusetts and all the pro goalies went to him in the 1970s
