    I remember when I first picked up the weapon. I initially was like "what's this?". Then I accidently went into axe mode. Then I was like "oooooh big axe!". Then I started to learn the mechanics. My impression then became "big axe needs big brain to swing". Never looked back. Became my favourite weapon imidiately and pretty much the only one I use with the occasional change.

    one important note about 4U charge blade was that you could go straight from a gp to SAED (or a shield charge) which was absurdly powerful and fun. Generations removed that which made charging the shield harder. also I'm not sure if this changed after 4U but gp also did one phial of damage and you could KO monsters like diablos by repeatedly using a guard point when they attack with the head

      In 4U you could counter with an AED/SAED after regular guards too, not only GPs. In Generations blocking with a charged shield gives you a mini phial explosion, while in 4U it was only with both charged shield AND a GP.

    You can also charge your sword out of Counter Peak Performance by holding X after if your shield is charged.

  • @GadgetGabe
    @GadgetGabe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In Gen/GU you actually couldn't go into AED from a shield thrust, you could only fill phials into the shield, combo into another sword move or morph.
    Aerial CB also could still use aerial AEDs in Gen, which was the optimal way to play it, but you couldn't use AEDs if you had a charged shield, you could only SAED, so people never charged shield with the style. GU's buff to that was making aerial AEDs possible with a charged shield.
    Also if you were wondering about the popular choice for the third HA in Gen's striker CB, people usually picked Energy Blade. It's a giant lightsaber made up of your phials that emits from the shield (the blade also had the most awkward hitbox possible somehow) and grew in strength and size depending on how many phials you had loaded into it.
    Gen/GU's CB overall emphasized being in Axe mode more to deal damage rather than staying in sword mode and using shortcuts to your strongest moves like other games since those shortcuts were removed. So comparatively it was not as free-flowing, less counter focused, and more committal akin to the Greatsword. I think Gen's CB was actually one of the biggest nerfs a weapon ever received going from one title to another within the whole series.

  • @MurdokEXTRA
    @MurdokEXTRA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    12:10 wrong. Shield thrust to AED/SAED was removed entirely in generations. It's not just striker lacking a shield thrust.
    Striker was popular BECAUSE the shieldthrust lost pretty much all of its utility.

    • @tonyngo1885
      @tonyngo1885 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shield thrust shortcut only serves to refresh shield duration in Gen/GU. Striker was popular because it gets increased damage modifier for axe attacks (like a 1.2x modifier iirc) and it can run both absolute Hunter arts because Ripper shield was the only one worth using in GU.

    • @MurdokEXTRA
      @MurdokEXTRA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonyngo1885 Ye, it did give the axe mode a boost but I wasn't sure if I remembered it correctly. And the shield thrust did end up kinda useless so giving it up entirely just wasn't too big of a sacrifice which I would say was part of why striker was popular.

    You forgot to mention how you can attack out of Counter Peak Performance with either a condensed element slash if you hit X, a morph slash with A, and an AED or SAED with XA!

    Charge blade , switch axe , you know all these are well and good . But do you know which weapon was the first ! to mix a weapon with machinery ?? A weapon so mighty it had to be contained , bound by chains ....in the bottom of tier lists... , as its power was so technologically advanced and marvelous ,if more than 3 concurrent players used the weapon the whole of the monster hunter universe , from stories to frontier ,would collapse! The allmighty gunlance!! So my friends dont be fooled . When people claim the weapon is "slow" and "garbage" , they are simply spreading false information, propaganda as to keep the number of people playing gunlance down! I am one of the three that main the weapon . But if more of us start using the cannon buster sword we ll be able to reshape monster hunter reality as we know it !! So please , SuperRad , spread the word of the great gunlance by making the history video on it next and Lead us to a new generation filled to the brim with giant shields and awesome explosions!!! Molten Tigrex, Crimson Demon Fatalis, and Silver Rathalos especially suffered at the charge of my blade.

  • @justsomejojo

    The Charge Blade is fascinating to me. I used it a LOT at the beginning of MH4U because it looked like a beefier SnS and I loved that. Thought I did pretty well, until about 10 hours in, I join up with some friends and immediately realize I'd been completely ignorant of one of its mechanics - the shield charge. Watching the video, it now makes much more sense to me as to why. Back then, I thought it felt "tacked on" to a perfectly fine weapon and that makes sense once you know it wasn't originally there.
    I never really used it too much after this and fell into the trap of deeming it "too complicated" as seems to be the common say about the CB. Then, when I replayed World recently, I found that no, the weapon isn't really complicated at all. It actually has a very VERY fluid style of attacking that makes it easy to completely ignore any of the charging stuff. Once you actively learn to keep an eye out for the charge, it's pretty simple imo.
    That said, I'm still far from considering myself good at the weapon. I have way too much fun using the charged up sword to quickly stun monsters to the point that I'm not sure if the weapon is for me since I really dislike the AED combo. The way I actually enjoy to use the weapon seemed sup-optimal to me and that's a big turn off for me. The fact that Gen and Gen U actually nerfed SAED and AED was a huge surprise to me watching this video considering how I think of the weapon. I think CB, I think AED spam, but apparently that's not true any more, is it?

    12:00 or so - none of the styles can use the shield thrust into AED or SAED. The reason SAED isn't used is because the motion values were nerfed to be only just as good as the AED at 4-5 phials, while removing your charged shield. Also, the aerial style has a more powerful air AED.

  • @lts_Hazard
    @lts_Hazard ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fun fact: Phials deal pierce/ammo damage, meaning your phials will deal more damage based on where you hit. This also means that Charge Blade can successfully deal all 3 types of damage in one. Slashing for the Sword/Axe basic attacks, and Blunt for the Impact Phials specifically.

    Next weapon I wanna see is Gunlance.
    It's such a criminally underrated weapon that gets overlooked due to its slow & clunky nature. It's deceptively supportive because it capitalizes best off of a team since you can keep laying on consistent pressure when the monster is down. Helps that's its shells are flat damage, meaning they'll always hit at the exact amount regardless of where you hit on the monster.
    You typically play in sort of hit & run tactics until you can actually get in, since you're biggest hitting moves don't have the MOST amount of wind-up; saying this as someone who also plays Great Sword.
    But, in particular, I love how its done in G/GU since Striker/Alchemy style allows you to, effectively, constantly have Wyvern Fire at the ready due to Dragon's Breath resetting once it's done. Aerial style allows you to just constantly unload your clip into the monster (great with normal shells).
    But, if you REALLY want to hit that rush of dopamine, full team of gunlance in Iceborne. A neat little feature with gunlance in Iceborne is the Wyrmstake Blast, & nobody seems to talk about it.
    What it does is make all explosive attacks hit twice. Obviously, with a single gunlance, yeah, it makes the shells more effective, & it passively buffs sticky ammo. But picture this: 4 gunlances, all have used their Wyrmstake Blasts, & all are unloading their clips. Congrats! you've turned the monster into a Michael Bay film. You're not even going to SEE the monster with the amount of explosions going off.
    I love this weapon. What looks like a very unassuming "shotgun with a blade" weapon is VERY in-depth & synergistic weapon.
    (Edit for spelling)

    When I use the Charge Blade it's weird, I end up primarily using the Axe mode and only go into sword and shield mode if I know I need to block or prep for a super/normal element discharge. I just like the axe mode more.

    GU player here: Pre ultimate CB had Energy blade and Limit-breaker. Limit breaker allows you to increase your phial count (up to 10 if you use the 3 variant), and Energy blade is a wide sweep that becomes way stronger and way bigger the more phials you have.
    See where i'm going with this?
    10 phials mixed with giant lightsaber of death has some of the highest MV of any single move. But it's also rather situational and takes forever to charge and set up.

    I know this is about a year late, but I wanted to chime in on savage axe. It was the highest consistent damage CB had in iceborne, especially against monsters without many big windows to SAED af6ter a gp. In rise, it's much the same. You can still sidestep after a succesful guard or guard point in rise too! The advancing wirebug move not only sets up for an aed or saed in any direction, but also lets you go straight into Elemental Discharge 2, which is verry strong to reposition to head and have a higher dps combo in spin axe mode. Overall fantastic video though, keep up the good work!

    When CB was added in 4U, I swapped from LS main to CB main, and continued that through World and Iceborne. I have to say, it's kind of weird to see that the more intricate resource management that I loved about the weapon was actually new for 4U.

    Valor Style in GU is super broken in axe mode, because you get an infinite combo with the ability to use phials with the A button attack, if the Valor gauge is full, allowing for a ton of damage, as every second hit with the infinite does a triple swing that, with each hit of the attack, does phial damage. You can essentially pump a monster full of phial damage, while never needing to use SAED at all.

  • @BoostedMonkey05
    @BoostedMonkey05 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason Striker Style was used was as follows:
    -Striker Style removes the shield thrust from the SnS moveset. While to many new players, this might seem like a detriment, keep in mind that the super shortcut does not exist in Gen and GenUlt and using it in guild will just net you a yellow shield no matter how many times you load your shield. You HAVE to charge your shield in Axe mode
    -the previously stated 20% boost to axe attacks.
    -striker for all weapons can bring 3 hunter arts and hunter arts charge faster. For most CB players, this just means bringing both absolute arts and Ripper Shield.
    -at the start of the animation, the advancing slash gets a guard point that allows players to plow through attacks that require guard +1 if they have Red Shield.

    One thing ya missed, between 4U and Gen they ramped down the KO damage on CB because it was outshining Hammer and HH. Not only was CB doing more KO damage than the two weapons dedicated to it, but it could also cut off tails, the one thing you lose by using the Hammer/HH.
    I joked that it wouldn't be long, but both this and my baby IG had a lot of mechanics put onto it. I used CB alot in 4U myself, but couldn't get into it in Gen/GenU, which is why its in my side weapons.
    I think we should jump into one of the gunner weapons now....and do Gunlance! What, its 'obviously' a gunner weapon, it has 'gun' right in the name =P
    But seriously though, you should go ahead and head to the gunner weapons. I'd love to see IG, but I want that to be the last one because its so fun, that and it techincally two weapons: The IG itself and your Kinsect (three if you count how you can use the terrain to your advantage in World by jumping off the walls into your aerial combo and in Rise you can stab it into the walls). But yes, jump into the Bow which I feel has come a long way from 2nd Gen.

    I can't find this in the comments but you could actually both shield and sword charge from the counter Peak performance
    Edit: for those wondering, to charge shield, press top and right face buttons after the slik bind guard, then right trigger. For condensed element slash, simply push top face bottom after the guard, and if your shield is charged it will charge your sword as well. This method is significantly faster than the standard method.

    I'm glad to see the savage axe has kinda come back in rise now. Now the silk bind system forces you to choose between being able to charge up the blade, or doing savage axe mode instead. I think that's cool, hopefully one form doesn't blow the other out of the water so there's reasons to choose each.

    Um nice video and all but I feel like the importance of guard points to playing CB was somewhat understated. I understand that this is not a weapon tutorial video but you did not even mention that the sliding slash and savage axe transformation both have the added benefit of a guard point or that a successful guard point can instantly lead into either an AED or a SAED. Guard points are what make the weapon feel unstoppable and are one of the reasons to main CB. I'm not trying to insult you but I noticed that sometimes your information is incomplete. Still I enjoy these videos and I am looking forward to the next one.

  • @boulderfrogboulderfrog6512
    @boulderfrogboulderfrog6512 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh hey he missed a thing. In 4u there were actually two attacks in sword mode that you did with r+x, one of them had a guard point and is the one it still has today, and the other was a bit faster and didn’t have one. For the one with the guard point, which is almost always the one you’ll want to be using you have to press x slightly before you pressed r, and for the faster one you can do it out of a normal guard by pressing x while guarding, or pressing r before x while standing. In gen they changed the second one to have a guard point that was smaller and in all other games they just removed it. The reason I know this is that the number of times I have been screwed out of a guard point because I pressed r slightly too soon is far too high. I’m pretty the second attack of the 123 sword mode combo also had a guard point that was removed, but I might be misremembering

    You missed that in World you can overcharge philes with condensed element to attack faster, letting you deal phial damage very quickly. This became irrelevant in Iceborne due to savage axe being better, but it was very nice in base world. If it still works in Rise I think it might make a comeback with Savage Axe being missing.

    i know this might be a weird opinion but the weapon these days in the new games doesn't feel as good as it did in 4U even tho its arguably better in the new games I think the main think for me is the fact the the full SAED cost you your shield charge and it felt more powerful as well

    So, I’ve used the charge blade in Rise and Iceborne, the savage axe mode can be extremely broken, big fan of it, in iceborne you basically bully the monster with it to the point that Alatreon can become a joke, and most other monsters kinda get screwed over, although it’s hard to keep the damage up due to how slow it is, but if you stay next to the monster, it’s actually pretty crazy, only using triangle while on PS4 can take down a Rathalos in like 2 minutes, which with how little you do anything shouldn’t really be the case, it’s change in rise turns into a very useful utility for people who like the axe mode more, while also retaining some of that previous power, but not to the extreme of Iceborne
