  • The diet of my 300 Jersey dairy cows. Today I show you what I feed them in Autumn, it's still a grass based diet with a little bit of supplement fed to keep good condition on the cows as we are coming to the end of our milking season. Feed is also getting a little bit tight as we haven't had any rain for a couple of weeks.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
    Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

    Its up to you but i have always found it best to skin the bale 1st before you pick it up then you only have to take the net wrap off you would find it easier if you only had 2 tines in the fork that you use

    Good evening I am very much enjoying your videos & fondly remembering my early childhood growing up in Te Awamutu in the 1960’s.
    My father was very involved with the establishment of the yacht club & us kids grew up in a very wholesome environment. Looking at your farm and the old red shed next to the disused cow shed reminds me of Ian and Margaret’s farm. They ran from memory a pedigree Ayrshire herd and I was extremely lucky to care for a calf for calf club on their farm. I am now living in Australia and just starting a small beef farm as an interest, which I guess all started many years ago with Ian’s generosity lending me that calf. Would Ian have been by chance your grandfather?
    It was a very long time ago and my apologies for being so presumptuous.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi David, it really is a small world! Ian’s father and my grandfather were brothers so he’s my Dads 1st cousin.
      Yes they did have pedigree Ayreshire’s, when we brought the new block of land, it was off Ian’s son, and he sold the cows about 3 years ago .
      I’m living in Ian and Margarets house at the moment but Ian passed away probably 5-6 years ago maybe and Margaret before that.

      Thanks so much for your reply Andrew, I have wanted to reach out, but wasn’t sure if my childhood memories were that accurate!! I was fortunate to have stayed in your house sometimes during school holidays.
      I can also remember Ian’s old Land Rover, a paddock planted in potatoes each year and the construction of his new herringbone shed.
      I wish you well with your channel it’s really great to have you showcasing farming life in NZ and of course the Waikato.

      We won’t know till the end of the season but at the moment the mid point for the milk price is $7.60. Don’t know currently what cost of production is but it would be around the $3-4 mark maybe a little higher.

    Problem is not that anyone would use a bi product that would be dumped anyway. Problem with palmeolie is the deforestation and destruction of soil that follows just so the industries can use it at a cheap filler in products. That part should be banned immediately. And I'm sure that farmers can find something else to add to the feed. Because farmers that use it for feed are not at all creating the problem.
