  • Yea... Rotate is OK... I guess... but how about when you can move and rotate items without changing tools! That's WAY better!!

"Good tip! It's LEAN. You could dive into the Move tool and demonstrate its full capabilities: M=Move, M+Opt, M+Opt /#, M+Opt *#, etc. So much can be achieved with M+. 'M'=Magic! 😎🤙

AND...whilst rotating putting the cursor near the edge of the compass makes the rotation lock into 15 degree increments.

I had found very helpful to use absolute move [a,b,c] and relativa move

Is there a way to orbit an object instead of rotating it? There is an orbit tool, but it orbits the entire space. Is it possible to do that to individual objects?

I frequently experience that problem picking the rotate handle accidentally. If I zoom in as you recommended it puts the location where I want to "move to" out of view. I work around it by entering an estimated number of feet to move it close to where I want. Then pan the item and complete the move. I am realistic to consider, " it's me it's not you". But I would think there would be a quick modifier to activate the rotate function to be on or off ( or off and on as Arron might ponder the chicken/ egg). Perhaps, I can zoom out while still have a move in progress ?

As with most operations in SketchUp, you should click and release once to start the Move. Then you're free to zoom out, indicate a direction, type a distance, or have a sip of coffee before you click and release again to complete the Move.

The hints at the bottom that tell you what happens if you press the ALT, SHIFT, CTRL buttons is gone on my SU window. Any ideas on how to get it back...

Like all features, I wish I could do this on iPad.

You can. Works there the exact same way.

@@AVSMedical1I'm in sketchup on my ipad at this exact moment. I made a box, grouped it, and am in the move tool right now. Those little marks to allow me to rotate are nowhere to be seen.

I remember now, it’s a Setting change. Go into a model, Settings>General>Show Move Tool Rotation Grips

Unlike rotate where it lets you option copy and rotate a group/component this doesn’t, it only rotates the item as demonstrated.

I hate that this function is in the Move tool and not the Rotate tool. It's a great tool, just in the wrong place

Aaron I've been using Sketchup since version 1 when @Last was passing out cdroms they burned and put a label on. I don't remember what version this combination move/rotate "feature" was introduced but it's a "bug" and not a "Feature" IMHO. You are demonstrating something on a model with literally 10 legos. Try working on a SketchUp file that is almost 1 gig in file size. with many millions of polygons. and is the real world size of several city blocks. Now your "simple" solution of zooming in gets painfully slow and tedius and extremely frustrating. And to add misery it's a task you need to perform "thousands" of times a day "EVERY DAY" then I'd think like me you would want a way to turn this "feature" off. At a minimum can the programers give me a simple move tool that does not have this "bonus" rotate feature, than at least the human being gets to make the decision and not the machine.

Yeah, this is a very simple example but I, personally, use this function on even my most complex models. I do understand that not everyone models the same though! Fortunately, 2024 introduced the ability to toggle the rotate grip off in Preferences! Now you can choose to see them or not!

@@aarondietzen2995 Thanks As a former Beta Tester I used to be at the bleeding edge of SU, but now that I've gotten older I've become a bit more stubborn. I'm still using 2021 as my main modeling software. I have not even transferred my plugins to 2022 yet. It's a true sign of a great software developer when you listen to your users and implement fixes and new features to benefit the users. I may have to make the quantum leap to 2024 now that I know this feature can be disabled. I still remember when the Windows version of Sketchup did not have transparency or when we had to use Carmaks Revearse to correct a Shadow bug if the Camera location was the shadow of an object.

I hope they will improve sketchup by adding more tools/commands and options .
Sketchup was the same since 2005
