I appreciate your straight forward points man. A lot of people are whining about the sudden price drop - because "RED doesn't mean anything" to them anymore. We always have to consider when buying a camera that suddenly, a new one could be coming out with better specs or that the current camera will devalue and if it upsets those people, they shouldn't have made the decision. But for creators like us (or me at least) it opens up new exciting possibilities. Gave you a sub, keep it real man!
Finally a non-salty guy who is buying a tool for his craft and not someone making an 'investment'. The returns should be expected from the work done by the camera and not the camera itself.
Your opinion is very valuable to many of us, and I agree 100% with it! Good share, man. Imma keep rocking and learning with my used Komodo and my 6KFF for the time being and see what the future brings. Cheers
Depending on your budget, and the nature of the job that you do, the vrry fact that you can be able to buy a camera, whether used or new, depending on the region where you come from, and tell your stories, regardless of the camera brand, is the most important thing to factor in...
Small thing but I appreciate your mention of an emergency fund. The internet is full of advice about reallocating budget toward MORE STUFF but if something you wanted to buy just got cheaper, why not just pocket the difference? Great looking footage, btw!
It depends on how much money you make per project. If I made 60k so what about losing 3 grand. If you are not making money you should be renting anyway.
Well, It's nice to see you are not having the expected reflex reaction of protecting your purchase that others in the space are doing. I appreciate the honesty. I thought about the KX. I waited. I'm invested in Canon. I ordered the C400. I hope I made the right choice. I think I did. We'll see.
My Nikon Z6iii was quite expensive considering what the Z6ii was first priced at but the video specs are considerably better. No doubt Nikon will have a sale on it before Christmas.
I just made a video about why I invested in the Komodo-x (or a cinema camera in the first place) You touched on a lot of my points. I could have gone Sony fx6 or any other camera but chose the KX because of the jobs I wanted to do. Not that it will necessarily get me more work, but it makes sense to own a system that will be in your workflow regardless. Agree that you shouldn’t buy based off resale value, but it would sting a little bit if I just purchased it new and couldn’t get it for the new price. Would sting even more if I were trying to sell and immediately have to drop the price by a large margin. Haha but it’s part of owning tech I guess!
Ya timing will always suck for someone and will be perfect for the next person. That’s the nature of tech. Buy it if it fits your workflow. Renting is a perfect way to see if it will work too.
I've been doing a lot more corporate work this year and the Komodo/X price drops are so tempting. Probably won't do it though (because my current clients still won't care), but - it is tempting.
Clients almost never notice the difference except a big camera vs a mirrorless haha. If KX doesn’t fill a gap in your workflow, I wouldn’t recommend it. Rent it to scratch that itch of shooting a project on a red and be done with it haha
The new price had me consider the Komodo X to replace my Blackmagic UMP G2 and Pocket 6K Pro. People mention about media cost and how much footage you actually get from a 1TB card but is it any worse than using CFast card recording BRAW in Blacmgiac cameras? Is the RED monitor a must have or can you get by using other monitors?
Depends on what compression rate you shoot at and what camera you are considering. Cfast 2.0 vs express Media cost not that big of an issue especially in comparison to 6KPro but for the UMP 4.6k braw 12:1 vs 6k ELQ is a substantial difference in size. And we get by using our BMD video assist on our reds but it’s getting by. I wouldn’t say it’s very user friendly but it works.
The red monitor isn’t a must have but it certainly makes for a better experience with camera control and frees up the SDI for a teradek unit or something. RED has a tool on their site to show data rates for the different compressions
I'm a weird person and I don't want one only because I want a RED Pro 5.0 sized screen from the DSMC2 line, and I think the new DSMC3 RED Touch 7.0 is too big. I have no idea if they're making a DSMC3 5.0 screen some day or not, but if they do, I'll totally pounce on a KOMODO X. I know I could go with a SmallHD touch, but, that seems like an incomplete solution to me. That old 5.0 screen was pretty good for what it was, back in the day when I got to play with the EPIC. Of course I'm most interested in an FX9II coming out more than anything right now. Price drop is pretty cool though!
I’d LOVE a 5in monitor. So many people have been asking for one. Before the acquisition, it was on their radar supposedly, but who knows if that will happen now.
I love my KX. I think some people forget that none of the accessories went down in price. If you buy the Komodo-X, you'll still have to spend a billion dollars on accessories for it=)
Crazy discounts! Being a C70 owner since it's out it's very tempting to try it out. Anybody here use it with the DJI lidar as a solo filmmaker? Wondering how you guys deal with the focus and ND filters?
Just got the C70 and those internal ND's are just the best. The FX6 nd has pretty bad IR. The kippertie solution is not bad but it isn't as flexible or fast as the C70.
That's a wicked burn to RED owners. People are better of with Sony FX30 or FX3. For myself personally FX30 with Sirui Sniper or Nightwalker lenses & Sigma 18-35 zoom lens. 🤷🏽♂️
@@TylerEdwards I don't use Sony but I would buy it over the RED. I use Fuji XH2 for photography but If I would need video it would probably be an FX30. Thanks 🙏🏽
@@Kiywii oh they’ve taken great strides and Nikon is on the right track. The z8 is a fantastic camera-I just didn’t enjoy using it. Too many quirks for me. I’ll bet the Z8 II will be a home run. I have zero doubts about that
@@TylerEdwards Nikon did not seem to know what they were doing when it came to video and copied from Panasonic and Canon but not enough to make complete sense. Now they have RED's expertise and need to put it to use. RED does have a strange workflow but NRAW has not been widely adopted.
Yeah, I totally agree. There’s no reason to have a RF mount in their ecosystem. It’ll be cost efficient to have a Nikon Red brand or just dissolve Red’s technology into a software base branch of Nikon. Unfortunately, due to the extreme price cut, I think the old Red system will eventually lose tech-support, especially for new auto focus lenses. Only time will tell. Honestly, it’s an amazing deal for filmmakers.
I can't help but think this is a reactionary, corrective action by RED's new overlords to combat slow sales. Is it the best at that price point? I think it's easier to make the case that it is, than the case that it isn't. That's to say, there are solutions to give a KX ND, solutions to record lighter codecs, even solutions for a more robust AF experience. But on the flip side, there are no solutions to make footage from an FX6 or C400 look like THAT.
It is the best at the price point for some, but it is also the worst solution for others. Everyone has different needs. There is the PL ND adapter, but I do with there as an EF adapter they made with the same NDs....and also for way less than the unnecessarily high price tag they have for the PL adapter haha. Agreed on look; KX delivers a look that neither FX6 or C400 can deliver (and I love both of those)
guessing they have some serious stock to offload. its also projected for Americans to be in a record-setting amount of debt at beginning of 2025, and Red/Nikon pencil-pushers prob trying to stay ahead of that curve a bit too.
ya that cam looks awesome….its also $15K, so not quite the same price point lol. Unless you mean the Ursa Mini Pro 12K? In that case, yes, that is a good camera to compare and it is an awesome camera. Certainly much bigger of a camera which might be an important consideration for some 👍
