Was tweaking an Amp/Cab effect this past weekend. So many options to sculpt your tone on the BR-800 (and I assume other BR series). It would be cool to have a computer app like the Rhythm Compose to tweak on one screen and load. Again, not big deal. But the options to tweak are many.
Hello, nice to meet you. Can I ask you a question? I live in Korea. I bought this product a month ago. However, the left microphone among the built-in microphones clearly records the sound quietly. Is this normal?
Hello Demian k. When you are using the built-in Left and Right microphones the volume is controlled with the 3rd and 4th volume knobs. They are labelled 3/MIC L and 4/MIC R. Are those set to the same level? The REC LEVEL knob controls the overall recording sensitivity, but it is easy to forget knob 3 and 4. Is that the reason? If not, I will have another think. :-)
Hi. Sorry for the slow reply. The main problem with the Micro BR is that I keep getting "drive busy" errors. Also it only has four tracks, or two stereo tracks, and I can't use it as an audio interface to the computer via USB. There is one thing it does better than the BR-800. It can play MP3s at any speed, but I use Capo on the computer for that kind of practice now.
I think the BR-800 is brilliant. Does the BR-900 probably have pretty much the same features maybe with some extra ones? It is possible that the videos I have uploaded might be interesting to BR-900 owners too.
I don't know, but I think probably not. But that raises an interesting question - the four inputs at the back each have TWO sockets, so I wonder if i could record TWO instruments on each of the four inputs, making 8. I'm going to try that now.
Well blow me down! That works. A guitar into the input 3 jack socket AND a microphone into the input 3 XLR, on 4-input, and they are both recorded. Of course you can't balance up the two volumes on the same input, but guitars do have a volume knob. So you can have 8 simultaneous inputs. That's crazy! I feel that this needs a silly video.
How do you get along with the V tracks? I recently did a song and fun with adding lots of vocal backing tracks. The vox effects on the BR600 are awesome. But learning that I had to bounce them together to have enough room was just workable, but not ideal, not being able to adjust their separate volumes in the final mix.
I have the same problem. On the Micro BR you "bounce" record two or more tracks into one and then you can't adjust the levels or left-right pan or anything separately. On the BR-800 you Master two or more into one, but the same problem applies. I think that an orchestra usually has low-frequencies on the right (bassoon, cello etc) and high frequencies on the left (flute, oboe, violin etc) so it might sound best to "bounce" low frequencies together and high frequencies together. Lead and vocals in the middle. But with only 6 levels to adjust it can never be perfect.
@@AndyInTheUK Such a shame. And if you wanna buy a BR with more tracks you're looking at another few hundred quid on an old BR1600 for 10 tracks, plus 2 mixing tracks. Why they couldn't have added a few more tracks to the 800, and made it a little bigger/pricier, I'll never know. Still for 60 quid($90), I shouldn't complain at my BR600. It's expanded my creativity to a point where I'm creating more than it's basic functions. I might next go for a Zoom R8. I believe you get actual 8 tracks out of it.
Hi I'm really perplexed how do hook up a drum machine and what input select do I use to record simultaneously from the guitar front input and drum machine...thanks
Hi Mick. You want to select Input GTR & INPUT 4. Plug the drum machine into Input 4 at the back and a guitar into the guitar/bass input at the front. I don't have a drum machine, so I don't know what sort of cables it might have but I am fairly sure it will connect to one of the possible sockets for Input 4. Thanks for the question!
@@greenwoman99 Hi Mick. If you choose INPUT 1-4 you can record four inputs simultaneously. Ideally the guitar would be in the high-impedance input at the front but it works well enough in any of inputs 1-4 at the back. There are knobs for adjusting the recording levels for each of the four inputs. So, you could use the drum machine in input 2 and the guitar in input 3 or any combination that suits you. You don't have quite so much control over the effects like that, but you might have your own pedals etc that you can use instead anyway.
Andy, you mention copying tracks and ‘bouncing’, but how do you actually bounce tracks (without using a computer)? Copying tracks will give you a potential maximum eight tracks for mixdown whereas ‘bouncing’ can give you up to twelve (or even more if you’re clever enough) but I can’t find any info on track bouncing for this machine.
Hi Dennis. Sorry for the slow response (we are busy building a house). Yes there is no "bounce" record process on the BR-800, unlike the Micro BR, but exactly the same result is achieved with Mastering. You don't have to Master to T7/8 Virtual track 8 though that is the default. You can master to any track/virtual. So to "bounce" record, set up the tracks you want to record, turn off Master FX and rhythm and go to mastering. The cool thing about this is that you can apply effects selectively to a track (see Location), or vary the levels while "bounce" recording (mastering). There is no limit to the number of tracks you can merge together, if you use the resulting mastered track again to master with other tracks.
Andy I'm looking ar buying something cheap (as poss likely used) to get started with, simply to record 4 or 5 track guitar based song ideas on... I was interested in the mini BR80, cos of size, portsbility, cost etc. Interestingly you said for you, it had come to the end of its usable life for a variety of reasons.... Could elaborate on what these were please?
I have a Micro BR. It is the model before the BR80. I still have it, but it can only take 1GB cards max. For some reason it doesn't like the 1GB cards I bought. It keeps saying "DRIVE BUSY" and losing what I am trying to record. Since getting the BR-800 I realise that a lot of the things you can do on the BR-800 can also be done on the Micro BR, and also, I assume, the BR-80. The Micro BR is brilliantly portable, has great sound, is easier to interface to the laptop, and has a great MP3 trainer mode - that is why I am keeping it. Definitely get a BR-80! The Micro BR only has 4 tracks + rhythm, but I think the BR-80 has 8? You might find quite a few videos from other BR products helpful. Enjoy!
Is there a way to use the br-800 as a mixer just for say band practice or something fopr 3 to 4 people? Also is there a way to use a guitar effect AND a vocal effect at the same time? for example if i wanted to sing and play guitar at the same time.
Just heading off for a week's holiday but I will reply in more detail when I get back. However, from memory, if you choose Input type you can get different effects on 4-input channels, or Mic + Guitar, and edit the effects for the two different inputs. This isn't as comprehensive as the effects you can get on one input but might help. The other option is to record "dry" and then apply the effects to each track later. Let me check that when we are back. However, the basic message is that the BR-800 is not really a mixing desk. Oh, another idea! If you have pedals, you could do all the guitar effects pre-BR-800. Then you can record directly on 4-track without built-in effects.
@@AndyInTheUK Thank you very much as always for your timely reply. All those ideas seem great for recording but I wanted to simply use the BR as a mixer for a jam space. more of a pick up and play sorta thing. That's ok if there's no good way to do that. Thanks again
Hi Andy hopefully you can help. Channel 5/6 is not playing back on my BR800. It shows content but no playback. I tried copying the content to 7/8 and it plays back. I tried different inputs and still no playback. PLEASE HELP.
OK, I have been thinking about this, but I am not convinced any of these are the explanation. Where (in time) did you record to? Is it possible there is silence for the bit you are listening to? Did you move, rather than copy? If it plays on T7/8 can you copy that back to a different V-track on T5/6 and see if it plays there? Is Location turned on for an effect that effectively silences T5/6? Did you accidentally record over T5/6? I have done that by accidentally touching the Rec button while playing back. Even if you recorded silence over the music it would still show as track data. I have occasionally been unable to hear anything because the headphones I use have a stop-start button that the 3.5mm to 1/4 inch stereo adapter does not like. I would test T5/6 by creating a new song and seeing if it records a little bit of something that plays back. If it works OK, then I would assume I've done something silly. The other possibility is that the T5/6 volume slider is all the way down. Sorry - that is such an obvious thing to suggest I feel bad for even writing it, but I have done that myself. When you play back is the green Play light for T5/6 steady or flashing? If it is flashing that means you are muting T5/6. Touch the button to unmute it. The final possibility, which I very much doubt, is that the software is broken somehow. What version is the firmware? You can download and install new firmware, but I have never done that.
@@AndyInTheUK Hey, thanks for responding. Very appreciated. Because of your message I am going to try again before sending my BR800 in to Roland. Hello. I have a question. I have the br 800 and I want to use it as a mixer. The problem is that each channel, even if it has the peak and the potentiometer turned down, is still sounding. How can I make it sound only when I raise the potentiometer? And when So low that nothing sounds. Because now, even though it's completely down, it's still playing what's connected. Thank you.
Hi Game Play! I think this might be (slightly) possible. OK, so the BR-800 is not a mixer. It is a recording studio, It records onto tracks and then after you have recorded you can "Master" them down, and vary the levels of each track with the sliders. HOWEVER, it does have various input sources (Guitar, USB, Line, Microphone etc) and one of the possible inputs is 4TRACK REC meaning that the four separate inputs are the four 1/4" jack plug inputs in the back. When you do this, you can vary the volume of the input with the INPUT SENS knobs. The outputs will be the Phono pugs and the headphone stereo jack and the USB. I don't have a mixer, so I am not much of an expert in that, but you CAN adjust the Pan, EQ, CHO/DLY, and reverb for each track separately with the TRACK button and you should hear that as the input is being played. Is this helpful?
I have no idea if the BR-800 is vastly better than the BR-80. I don't have a BR-80. You are right that Boss is way overdue for a new digital recorder to replace the BR-80 and 800 and so on. I still keep my Micro-BR because it is super portable and does some things better than the 800. What I hope is that whatever Boss comes up with next will be able to import track data from BR-80 / 800 / 600 series machines. Thanks for the comment!
@@AndyInTheUK the newer Tascam ones are nice, but aren't guitar centric. Boss is the only way to go if you were to use onboard vocal or guitar effects.
Hi Jason! I would use the Wave Converter to move the mastered song onto my laptop. iTunes allows you to burn a playlist to CD. It is easy to import to song (they come over as a .aif file on the Mac) into iTunes. I think the Wave Converter software exports .wav files for Windows machines.
I bought a used BR-800 partially based on your content. Unfortunately it didn't come with the DVD-ROM. Any chance you'd send me the "Audio Phrase" subdirectory with its loops, etc.? If no, I understand.
I didn't get a CD ROM either. Actually I didn't know it was supposed to have one. Busy today, but I might see what the internet has to offer this evening when I get home. Is it loops you can import? Interesting.
Hi Highgate Handyman. I really don't think I can answer that question. I only own a Micro-BR (4 track very portable) and the BR-800. I love the BR-800. It has been around for a long time and I there are alternatives available now. The BR-800 is 4 mono tracks and 2 stereo tracks, so it is not a full 8-track machine, but since it is only me recording things that is plenty and you can mix tracks together to create the illusion of more. The BR-800 does have a rhythm track with editable rhythms, built-in microphones, and a load of effects which can all be edited. I have had a quick look for other similar machines but I have no idea if they have all the things in the BR-800. Tascam DP-03SD looks similar (with full 8 tracks) but I don't think has rhythm. Same for the Zoom R-16 or R-8. A portable all-in-one studio is a great idea unless you want to fill your house with gear (nothing wrong with that if you have space and money). Let me know what you go for! best regards, A
@H Kay I think Roland must hate the BR-800. It does so many things in one portable package, people don't need a dozen distortion/fuzz pedals, a looper pedal, a recorder, a microphone, or 39 amplifiers. Now I am looking into it a bit more loads of the effects and functions were also available in the Micro-BR but so much harder to access that I didn't ever find them.
Hi Seek4Truth! That is a good question. I don't have a looper pedal, but I have a pretty good idea what they do. The BR-800 is not quite the same thing. In Loop Record mode it immediately copies the bit you just recorded until it has exceeded 200 measures. At that point you could easily add a second track (etc) in loop record mode, but that would record from that point, not back at the beginning of the song. I have a feeling there is a convenient automated way of doing multi-track loop recording. More investigation is needed, with another video. Soon as I can!
@@seek4truth Just uploaded a video showing the BR-800 in loop record mode, recording three tracks and then potentially jamming on top (if only I were capable of doing that well).
Andy love your videos really do but your wrong I wouldn’t swap my room full of kit; amps, pedalboards, effects .... for your one device 😊 can’t wait four the four horsemen to sod off so we can have a proper jam!
If I had a room I could spare I would definitely swap the BR-800 for a load of amps, pedals, and guitars! When we have built a house there will be space in the garden for a guitar/music studio/cabin.

It's a shame they record in proprietary format and in 16 bit only.
How c@n I put my recording onto CD
@@AndyInTheUK Thanks. No worries. Just curious. I'm enjoying your BR-800 discoveries and creativity.
What's a more complete alternative please?
I'm keen to get an 8 track but dont want to rush in foolishly
Hi, can i use it as an 8 track LOOPER for live looping?
Hi Seek4Truth! That is a good question. I don't have a looper pedal, but I have a pretty good idea what they do. The BR-800 is not quite the same thing. In Loop Record mode it immediately copies the bit you just recorded until it has exceeded 200 measures. At that point you could easily add a second track (etc) in loop record mode, but that would record from that point, not back at the beginning of the song. I have a feeling there is a convenient automated way of doing multi-track loop recording. More investigation is needed, with another video. Soon as I can!
@@AndyInTheUK thanks for the reply
A tip: watch series at Flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies recently.
@Remy Conner yup, have been watching on Flixzone} for years myself =)
