Paul Henry: How I became New Zealand's biggest broadcaster

- Paul Henry was one of New Zealand’s last great broadcasting celebrities.
He was a radio broadcaster through the 1980s, but it wasn’t until 2004 that he became a household name. His seven-year tenure on Breakfast saw ratings soar and he boasted the type of star power at his peak that just doesn’t exist in broadcasting anymore. But alongside the fame were a number of on-air controversies that followed his career.
Paul’s rise to fame and fortune is even more incredible when you chart his journey from abstract poverty in Bristol being raised by his single mother. Not mention brushes with danger as a foreign correspondent that included being detained in Iraq, shot at in Cambodia, nearly lynched in the slums of Calcutta, threatened by the French navy at Mururoa and shelled in Bosnia.
But it all makes for a rich tapestry of life that we were lucky enough to hear about. Paul doesn’t normally do this sort of thing, so we’re feeling very lucky.

Wonderful story teller, and brillant podcast. Well done, Paul Henry had the balls to say what many people were thinking during his broadcast career.
I hadn't heard of this podcast until I saw it on Reddit and thought, "I have a 2 hour drive, might as well play the audio" and I have to say this was one of the most interesting, enlightening podcasts I've ever heard. Had me hooked from the beginning to the end with great questions, laughter, intrigue and even tears forming when Paul recounted his mother's struggles and their bond. From me, a nobody on the internet, I just want to thank you for this. It was greatly appreciated.

Love your guys podcast, absoloutely brilliant but any chance you can fix up the opposite facing hosts? Its really strange seeing the guest look at the person whos not actually asking the question. Its the missing ingredient in my opinion. Merely a suggestion, wont stop me from listening :)

Absolutely loved this. Tech question did you guys realize the way you have setup the cameras on the wrong sides. When Paul looked to the right he was being spoken to by the guy ohis left and vice versa.

Im a black guy from the other side of the world and first time i saw this guy on youtube with the breakfast show laughed my ass off.He is like austin powers in everything.I don't think he is a racist but i can't speak for everybody and thats the problem.

I so miss Paul on TV, such an interesting life, such an interesting person, such an amazing communicator. I just cannot stand watching these woke, unprofessional so called broadcasters on TV now. Some of them have never had a real job, no real life experience, can't even form a real sentence without a teleprompter to lead the way. Thanks for this interview Paul, I really enjoyed listening to your voice again...like meeting up with an old and valued friend.

Why shouldn't he, New Zealand is being Moarified by a minority and a legacy media who for the most part don't bother speaking English properly and are busy rewriting history into some mystical magical Maori bullshit tale while ignoring the negatives about Maoridom.
So he should. Hes a voice for many of us whos never afraid to truly say what we are all thinking. Its an incredibly fresh breath of air. Cancel culture and wokeness is alive and well sadly. Long live Paul Henry and his honesty.

Is Paul Henry's dad John Wayne? Pretty sure I saw that "dad throwing kid into water" story in a JW movie. Maybe that's where parents got the idea from.
