Miriam: Among the many vblogs I‘ve watched so far, yours stands out because they are not silly antics or tasting Chinese hotpot. You document your authentic life in rural China. Here we see family, love, hardworking, simple & healthy lifestyle, etc. Watching your videos often warms up my heart because they exude so much positive energy. May you and your family continue to have a fulfilling and happy life. Look forward to more of your videos.

Hi Miriam. If you have the space and resources, which I think you do, you should use all the methods. A slow compost bin for all the scraps you don't feed to the chickens. A hot compost heap of at least 1 cubic metre in which you can recycle all the bulk vegetation from your land such as grass, weeds, leaves, small branches from tree prunings some manure, finished vegy plants etc. I use a lawn mower to run over all the larger bits to chop them up. The chicken coop litter of straw/hay will be good compost additive when you clean it out every so often.

I have 4 chickens in Texas and I worm compost their coop manure. I use shredded cardboard as chicken bedding. I have poop boards under the chicken roosts. I scrape off the poop and some of the bedding daily in a bucket and I store it in a ~50 liter plastic trash can that I cut the bottom out of and but hardware cloth in. I also cover the top of the trash can with hardware cloth to keep out rodents. I have 2 trash cans made like this. By the time the second trash can is full of bedding and chicken manure, the first can is ready to be feed to worms. It is best to age the manure before adding worms. The material has to be moist but not soggy. I add calcium carbonate to ph buffer it. Almost anything can be used as a worm bin. It just has to block out light, have good ventilation and rodent protection. Worms have to be moist and don’t tolerate extreme heat or freezing temperatures. I have to keep mine off the ground about 2 feet (~ .5 meter) to discourage fire ants. Many things affect how long it will take to become compost like how many worms you add, the moisture and the temperature. I know you are in Sweden now having your second baby, but some day you will be back in the garden. Best wishes to you and your family.

Oh, Mariam so beautiful chives and vegetables sprouting out from your effort. Brilliant and your son is so cute and smart. He is already wandering around like the king of the castle. This is how Chinese used to live eating lots of vegetables and greens. My mother is from southern China before the family left for Malaysia. The Chinese diaspora is always and will always be proud of China and the progress she has made from everybody's colony to standing proud to be one of the largest economy in the world. Shame the corona virus pandemic has slightly sullied its progress. Jiayou China, Jiayou Miriam and her family. Love your videos and please keep them coming. Must also check out Li Zhiqi's wonderful videos when you have some time.

For the poor soil quality the straw you have been using is perfect. In my garden I had little to no topsoil and a heavy clay soil. I put flakes of straw between the rows to walk on and in only one year the straw broke down and gave me 10 cm of topsoil and tons of worms. I continued with the straw for 3 years now and I have now got over 60 cm of rich, dark loamy topsoil and my garden goes from strength to strength.

What a surprise to hear about your visit to me last (?) summer!
There's a good chance those are little pumpkin plants that sprouted from seeds in your compost. We added vermicompost to our seeds and we had pumpkin plants pop up like wildfire! We've transplanted them and hope they'll get us some pumpkin. If you don't want them, just treat them as a weed.
You could do both regular compost and worm (vermi) compost. Build a box with chicken wire for enough air flow and you can dump your food scraps in there. Turn it every now and then and take out from the bottom. That might be easier if you have a lot to compost, it'll go fast too when summer comes around.
Vermicompost takes longer to get ready and you'll need a lot of worms! I've got 2 bins now, but it's still going super slow.... Had some issues (a lot died) and finally the bins are doing well enough again, I've even spotted quite a lot of babies this weekend!

My garden is about one acre of lava land. Two years ago lava eruption destroyed half of my community, but my house survives. Now I turn it into an Airbnb to make some money so that I can travel. Last year I traveled to Mexico, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. This March I came back to Hawaii because of this coronavirus thing. I am going to restart my travel. I may go to China and Philippine this year. Of course after this coronavirus is over.

I have a warm compost in my flat and it’s really cool ! You just need to start slowly and not put a lot of food in the beginning other wise you might kill the warms by over feeding them (and that can bring in some wasps, mosquitos and fungus that will kill the warms).

You need to go to the market to get vegetable scraps chop them up and feed them to the worms. You can grind dry egg shells into powder and spread them on your vermiculture, it will help them reproduce really fast. If you know any chicken farms nearby, get the chicken manure to fertilize your plants, you need to ferment them before feeding them to your plants but they are really great

Bob Flowerdew does that box compost. Compost needs warmth to transform. So layers of greens and dark like stems in layers and some chicken manure. It needs to be there for a year if you use chicken manure as it will burn your plants if earlier used, needs to get old. If you don't use any manure just leave it until the weather is warm and turn it. Just top to bottom and you will find the bottom can be used in your garden. In the winter you can start a new one that will be ready in the early april, planting season. I always had two. One for a whole year with my chicken manure great for growing roses and one for the vegetables without, I could use twice a year, spring and summer. The warmth that is inside the compost heap will kill germs and put all to earth form. Pumkins grow on it because of that warmth. It has no use to put old food underneath your seeds as it needs that warmth of the heap to transform to earth. I just put 4 wooden posts with wire as a wall, then boxes against three sides. Two next to each other, you've plenty for your little vegetable garden.

Sansan is going to win the competition between you and mother in law.
I know you're vegetarian but I would suggest you get some more chickens and ducks. They are easy to sell, they help you keep the pest off the leaves.
    Chicks can be very handy.

Miriam, perhaps you can build a shelf against the wall to plant more items? Just a thought.
