hey Miriam, thanks a lot for the interview💖! It's a pleasure to share my experience to everyone who is interested, and I hope my tips are helpful. P.s. you are right, most chinese are not so territorial, and we love extend our hospitality to strangers!
I taught university in Beijing for two years and was lucky enough to visit Yunnan--specifically Kunming and Shangri-la. The beauty and majesty of China combined with its history and diversity cannot be found anywhere else. I lived in Vancouver BC Canada for many years and now live in Toronto, Canada's largest city, but honestly, there is nothing to compare with China and its rich culture. I left a big piece of my heart in Zhongguo and I keep that fact to myself because people don't understand here.
I've followed Miriam for years and Yan since her trip from Europe to China. I've always wondered what she had studied in Europe. I think she studied in Switzerland, as she had Swiss friends when she did that lovely video about cheese making in the Swiss mountains, a special video for me because I spent a month in Vallais, Switzerland yars ago. She was speaking some German with them. I was curious about what she studied in Switzerland, good that Miriam asked: 1- Bachelor in landscaping architecture. 2- Master in Urban planning., 3- PhD in tourism geography. So, besides being this adorable, adventurous woman, she has a serious academic background as well. Wow, if I were some 170 years younger, hahaha, I would go to China and offer to work for her as a video editor, for FREE, as I don't need a salary. I've been following everything about China for some 5 years and I'm "aspiring" to go spend my retirement as n engineer in China, specifically in YUNNAN and start a small FREE private Math school for kids in one of those small idylic village there. I have to figure out how I could do that though but I definetely would love to spend the rest of my life in some Yunnan village around those little bubbly Math-loving Chinese kids.
That sounds just about what I hv in mind, but would hv to teach other subjects rather than maths, doubt that my maths degree from the UK is gd enough to teach Chinese children or I could be your assistant 😅
@@slaw2224I think that your English is good enough to teach kids, plus an OK mandarin is quite suitable to teach Chinese children in many places in China.hope ur dreams come true!
Yan has taught me so much about china. She has shown many many people just how beautiful and diverse the country really is. Misconceptions about China in the western world have been rife and it’s wonderful to see how wrong we’ve all been. I’ve really fallen in love with the country and its people since watching Yan. What a fantastic ambassador and so extremely likeable 😊.
Her favourite experience while travelling she narrated the little boy Mehmet from uyghur is actually also my favourite video. A young child but very kind and enthusiastic to invite and let others know of their culture❤❤❤
I love Yan’s channel, we get to see how beautiful China and the Chinese people are. I was lucky to travel to limited places in China in 2014 and loved it ❤
I totally agree with everything. Friendly people. Genuinely interested by you and wanting to hear about your feelings on China. About your country. You can communicate a lot with gestures, photos etc. Most of all I felt always so secure and safe as a older woman travelling alone across China. In other countries neighbour of China security and safety incidents were an issue. But never had any negatives in several months in China. Bravo little Chinese. Love from Canada.
Two tips about hiking in China: 1. Most natural spaces are publicly owned either by the state, or by the village collective. So there is no "private property/no trespassing" kinda thing in China. And Chinese people are generally not that territorial so as long as you are not crazy you can go where ever you like. 2. Many trails in the mountainous area were built to facilitate the communications between the villages and they are generally called "Gu Dao/古道“ which literally means "ancient roads". They are usually very solidly built with stones and by following these "Gu Dao" you can go from one village to another. Most villages should have the modern paved road connected to the towns and cities so you can always get the ride if you decided to wrap up the hiking for the day.
@zchu3179 This is what I had imagined but wasn't sure about it. Thank you for the info. Natural areas belonging to the state, province, or villages are 100 times better a system than the Western capitalist private ownership. In Brazil, almost most natural areas are private property, and A LOT of land is not used for anything, owners keep it just for investment/speculation. There are public natural parks but the total area is too small, compared to the huge size of the country.
That sounds quite annoying in Brazil! I think in the US it's also quite tricky with land? I'm lucky to have access to nature in Sweden, where you basically have the right to be in any natural area. So we have plenty of forest and hiking trails to move about and forage in!
Thank you so much, Miriam, for this lovely interview with Yan! A special treat for me, I admire both of you. I like her channel's name..."Little Chinese Everywhere¨, so true.
There are so many influencers online, but Miriam and Little Chinese are two of my favorites. They are both well educated, positive, thoughtful, not really political and they bring me to places NEW to me! For Miriam, I like the way your chat with others. There are so many people you can chat with, and there are so many topics. You can sit down and draw an annual plan, or maybe two year plan if you like. For Little Chinese, it's completely ok to date and marry a Whiteman. It's ok for every healthy person despite that it's really not our business.
I was amazed that China can offer the beauty that can enchant your audience, it is an eye-opener that Chinese people can speak with the same language are so helpful and kind
Thank you Miriam, this is EXACTLY the interview I wanted to watch! Yan is an absolute treasure and her videos are a highlight of my week. Hope you have safe travels yourself.
Wow Yan is already soo famous. When I started following her she just had 72 subscribers 😅 but I stuck with her following her journey from Switzerland crossing Silk road borders til I yearned to study Mandarin as well so I could understand the Hanzis(Chinese characters) on her screen until now it ballooned to over 300k subscribers. I had no doubt she will reach this. Thanks for this podcast interview. Congrats Yan!❤❤❤
Yan - We will looked forward to your next journey and you have our fullest support to all your videos. Please don’t rush, take your time , love all of your sharing ❤🥰🙏
your my no1.favorite chinese blogger ..even if im not yet travelling china..i feel my self spirit rather that you brought me in your mesmerizing country
I follow all three of your channels and you are all my favorites 💕 I am so grateful to you for showing me parts of this world I knew nothing about. 🙏💕🙏
Oh wow. I did not know Yan is Dr Yan and a masters degree. I love to learn more about her travels and background. I watch them all as my wife comes from Kunming and have been to a number of places in China in the 90’s and after. I have to learn Chinese even though I am 66. Its will be so beneficial while traveling in China. Keep up all your good work both of you. 😊👍Andrew.
Yan sounds like quite an amazing young woman, and her channel sounds interesting. She and you have a lot in common! Thank you for this conversation, and I look forward to seeing your travel videos, and to watching some of Little Chinese Everywhere!
Yan is the one person whose videos I look forward to. I hope she keeps on sharing with us, she is not only very intelligent, but down to earth, has amazing drone skills. She opens our eyes to unseen people and cultures, and does it so naturally, unpretentious. She has a warm heart 💜💜.
Besides Little Chinese Everywhere there's another very good blogger Atlas Explore China on YT..His videos are primarily focused on rural areas/scenery and festivals..He only speaks Mandarin but English subtitles are available..
Yan is so charming ! Thank you for presenting her here Miriam. I did not know her name, just that sweet face. And that she travelled through Europe, Switzerland ! Great reporting ! It is night time here, I fell asleep ….. after. Making that comment half way. And now I could finish it.
You provide an excellent cross-over view of Chinese life while Yan gets closeup and personal with Chinese life in a way that intrigues everyone. I love both channels. I look forward to seeing how you balance east and west as you raise your family and with Yan I, like her, am just curious to see/learn more and more! Thank you both.
You both noted that language is a barrier and that is true if you speak no Chinese (usually Mandarin) at all. But if you can speak a little, enough to cover common issues, you will be very warmly welcomed even if their dialect/accent prevents you understanding them! A young person of 50 or less should be able to learn enough to make travelling rewarding in a year. It took me 5 years, but I was 60 when I had my first lesson, and now I have travelled a lot of the east alone!
I really enjoy watching Yan’s video on Unseen China…awesome beautiful places. Thank you Yan and i hope i could visit Guilin Y’shou one day. 👏 to both of you.
Yo sigo a Jabiertzo, otro youtuber casado con una China y me gusta porque está recorriendo China con su mujer y su hija pequeña. Nos enseña pueblos pequeños, lugares preciosos. China me parece increíble

Such a lovely video from both of you. I know I will never travel but I can still dream through watching your videos, Miriam and those of others.

Miriam, I don't know how much Chinese can you read, The reason I am asking this is because your work reminds me of a well-known author 沈從文,
One of the pieces of Yan’s advice was to have a loose itinerary. Is it possible to do this as a foreigner in China? We have to submit all the hotels we will stay at to the government
I usually booked one hotel for the e whole stay, with free cancellation , then cancelled it 😅
I never had to submit hotels names when I travelled 20 years ago. Only in Tibet was there a permit to acquire and you had to have a tibetan guide with you when you go around.
it really help to know the language, yes?
