      naufalap many phones these days can acquire significantly less accurate GPS data for a minimal battery draw. It's often used by apps that apps want to retrieve your location in the background, such as Google Maps and Waze. The high accuracy GPS readouts can be reserved for more important cases, like realtime navigation while the app is open.

    • @Sassquatch0
      @Sassquatch0 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      If battery is an issue, stop buying Apple.

    • @SurajThapar
      @SurajThapar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      These days, GPS data isn't necessary to track your location. As Linus mentioned, Location Services gather data from the nearest Network Towers and pin point your location. Google also began gathering location information from the nearby WiFi Hotspots. Malicious apps can still track you down even if you turn off the location services.
      So next time, put your phone on Airplane Mode when you've to stay in stealth mode.

    I've been using Waze for a few years now. Although it really is an awesome GPS, sometimes it likes to pick a route that really takes you on an adventure, especially on road trips. Last year I was driving home from college in Michigan to New Jersey through Canada. As soon as we passed through Buffalo, it took me off the highway and through a network of country roads in western NY. Sure it added an hour onto my trip, but the views of the rolling hills were absolutely beautiful.

      A googolplex is the number 10^googol, or equivalently, 10^(10^100). Written out in ordinary decimal notation, it is 1 followed by 10100 zeroes, that is, a 1 followed by a googol of zeroes.

After a week at my new job it started telling me what route to take and time to leave to make it there on time, and I didn't ONCE use the GPS to get there. They also email me reports about the new places that I've visited each month, as if I didn't already know that.

    I have always found it interesting that Google Maps Navigation ETA's are never accurate, unless you are part of a herd or swarm. If you drive the speed limit on the highway at 7AM, your ETA will continue to increase, unless you speed up to 15-20MPH, or whatever unit of speed Canadians use, over the speed limit, which is what Google is seeing as the actual point A to point B times. :)

    • @kenbob1071
      @kenbob1071 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Google maps is totally inaccurate. All they do is assume everyone drives an average of 65 mph, never hits traffic, never hits construction. Bogus. Also, they don't account for normal rest stops on long trips. I usually take the total trip mileage and divide by 50 to get a more accurate estimation for trips over 200-300 miles.

    Google maps is great, it lacks the features of wave, but it's far clearer at giving up and coming junctions etc.
    I use g maps mostly, but if I got to an e entrance like football, where a big portion of 50k people are using Google maps, even the re routes end in jams. I've found Nokias Here Maps perfect for this situation as it offers some of the most bizarre routes, which for busy occasions is great.
    Also I'd your teaching overseas Here maps makes a great fall back opinions (or even primary) as you can download whole countries before you leave the house.
    So they all have their usages. Apple maps may have come along way, but the way it offers the driver info just plain sucks.

    Actually, there is a section on the Google maps app called "timeline" that keeps all the data stored on it. So I discovered it by accident about a year ago. And it had trips I took from years and years ago. Including where we stopped to eat. So yes Google does store where you're going on it's servers as I was able to access it with every new phone I bought. You can opt out of the timeline... But I'm assuming it just doesn't tell you where you went. But keeps it on record regardless

    I like the idea of reports of accidents and the like except it never fully works for me. For instance, earlier today Google alerted me to an accident on the highway I was on but when I clicked the alert all that happened is that my Google app opened with nothing about an accident. This is what always happens. When I click the alert I expect to get details on the accident or other incident, at least the location and how far ahead it is.

    Google location isn't always use. In many places Google sources traffic data straight from carrier operators, who have the location data anyway. Not as precise as GPS, but precise enough. You have to turn your phone completely if you don't want to be tracked.

    Waze is great, when you travel 20+ miles a day one way for worksites in the Portland Oregon area, it cuts off significant amounts of time by routing me through random neighborhoods and backroads that are empty. As opposed to sitting in a traffic jam, it will warn me ahead of time that traffic has slowed down and to take the next exit or turn at the traffic signal to avoid it, etc. To choose between: Google knows where I drive VS. Getting home/work in half the time.... I'll choose the quicker time.

    Google maps doesn't allow you to send ETAs or track someone's drive, so Waze is still superior.
    But waze doesn't mention "deleting data", in fact, it states that Waze keeps track of your preferred route decisions to make those suggestions in the future rather than you having to keep changing route (or just going your own way). for example, I always go left from my house instead of right, even though right is shorter, because there is a traffic light there that hardly ever changes vs a stop sign to the left; theoretically right is faster, real world, left is, and now waze always suggests that way for me.

    I was kinda suprised how detailed my trips were recorded, actually.

    I love google maps, very useful in my line of work (motorcycle courier) in London, like my A-Z map it's a useful tool for those postcodes and streets I can't find in the A-Z. The timeline is useful, I can review where I've been and work out better routes for going to certain places. Best of all the live traffic updates which again is useful in my job. Like I said it's just a tool and a very good one too.

    Linus. Google DOES keep all your location data. Go into Google maps app and view your timeline! It can tell you everywhere you have been, what time you were there and how fast you got there.

    Tennessee has actually used this at state level. It's TDOT SmartWay and features road conditions for all interstates and major cities, and includes things like construction and all, but also allows the user to view live traffic cams and flooded roads and events that are going on around town. If you're ever here in TN and need to know why I-40 is suddenly at a standstill, I highly recommend looging on (it's a webpage, not an app).

    But remember Google location history is part of Google tracking. They DO IN FACT KEEP A LOCATION HISTORY IN YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNT WHEN USING MAPS. nothing to worry about, but if you have an affair or kill someone, CLEAR THAT TRIP

    Google does keep a location history of everywhere you've been since you owned an android phone. It actually is available for you to view on Google timeline. Look it up. It's actually pretty useful if you want to know where you where on a certain day. I often use it to see how long I was at a place for work.
