Very perceptive. Earned you a new sub. 😊 Mamamoo is pronounced Mama like mom + Moo like a cow. Moo means radish in Korean. The fandom name is moomoo, their light stick is shaped like a Korean (or daikon) radish and moomoos often welcome new fans by saying Welcome to the radish field (or farm). Yeah, I know, dorky as hell but it's all part of the fun. MMM are serious artists who don't take themselves too seriously. They can make you cry with a ballad or bust up laughing with a crack song - people say Mamamoo can sing anything and write a song about anything and they have an extremely large and diverse discography to prove it. Your comment that they seem more mature is also spot on. They're often called a "woman group" in contrast to the very young girl groups out there. They're also unusual in that unlike most kpop groups they're not afraid to address social issues such as their longtime support for the full spectrum of gender and sexuality in conservative Korea, internet bullying in Hip or leader Solar (the blond who plays a boxer) discussing female genital mutilation on her yt channel, just to give three examples, and their songs about sex, love and passion tend to be more shall we say visceral than the typical PG Hallmark greeting card sentiments you usually get in pop love songs. There are a number of examples including the steamy lesbian song Shutdown by MMM's main rapper Moonbyul. I should identify the members for you. In age order from oldest to youngest with their two primary responsibilities in the group and their characters in the Hip MV: Solar (Kim Yongsun) - leader, singer: Boxer, Rebellious Princess, Leader of Glam Band Moonbyul (Moon Byulie) - main rapper, performance (dance): Choreographer, Video Director, Entertainment Co CEO Wheein (Jung Wheein) - singer, performance: Artist, Environmental Activist, Indie Singer/Songwriter Hwasa (Ahn Hyejin) - singer, rapper: President, Mom with unique sense of housecleaning fashion, Musical Theatre Actress Performance is their term for dance & choreo. Up until 2019 Mamamoo often did their own choreo and you can think of Moonbyul & Wheein as the dance captains but the only official positions are Solar as the leader and Moonbyul as the main rapper and the two jobs listed are just the members' primary self-defined responsibilities in the group. You'll hear all of them rap at times and tho Moonbyul & Wheein comprise the unofficial dance line Hwasa is the one who won a solo dance performance award for her solo song Maria at the 2020 MAMA awards. And tho Byul is the main rapper she's also an excellent singer (she auditioned as a singer rather than a rapper) and she won a landslide victory on a tv show called The Second World a year or two ago where 8 really talented girl group rappers competed as singers over multiple rounds. Besides being world class singers and charismatic performers Mamamoo are involved in all creative aspects of their career including songwriting, choreo, styling and MV concepts. MMM has the most songwriting credits of any girl group in kpop history and Moonbyul writes almost all of her own rap verses so she has the most credits of any female idol. Each member has a successful solo career as well and they're currently involved in solo projects. Three of them are in the midst of separate solo international tours and Solar just wrapped up promotions for her new solo album and will rejoin the cast of the musical Notre Dame de Paris on a national tour of Korea over the next couple of weeks before doing solo concerts in Seoul at the beginning of June. Wheein will perform 8 concerts in the US during the next few weeks and I'll see her in Brooklyn on June 4. Hip isn't one of their vocal showcases but you still noticed some of the reasons why Mamamoo are generally considered to be the vocal gold standard among kpop girl groups. Hip is a combo of a diss track mocking their haters as people who spit in their own faces with a message song that redefines Hip to mean being yourself and doing your own thing rather than the usual slang meaning of cool or trendy. Mamamoo has never fit into kpop's rigid standards regarding beauty, fashion, gender, sexuality or proper behavior by polite young female idols and consequently they've always been one of kpop's biggest shit magnets. Hwasa co-wrote the lyrics, which refer to several controversies over what she wore on her way to the airport. In the MV each member portrays herself in MMM and in three alternate lives as women who are unusual in one way or another and that's why at the end you see them as Mamamoo in the first universe and then their characters in the 3 alternate universes. The point of course is that all those women deserve respect rather than criticism and malicious comments on sm for being out of the norm. Have fun getting to know Mamamoo. There are hundreds of songs, dozens of group, solo and subunit albums and hundreds of hours of fantastic live performances available and good luck finding a bad song along the way. Fair warning - Mamamoo is one of the deepest rabbit holes in kpop and, as moomoos like to say, Once you Wheein you can't Whee-out!
Wow Mamamoo not expecting it will come to you this fast,, and yes they are not exactly girlgroup cause they are grown mature woman the youngest is 29 this year. And if you looking for vocal n harmony i think Hip is not really the song for it, you should try Piano Man, Decallcomanie, Starry Night, Wind flower, Where are We Now. And for an introduction for their skills and discograpghy i recommend you to do MAMAMOO The Killing Voice, thank you for reacting to them and liking it ❤
This group has been around for a while and all the members are in their 30s except the youngest she's 29. They are all grown seasoned women which is where the mature sound comes from but they have always had a mature sound since debut
I too love Moonbyul, the rapper, because how you see her onstage, is how you see her off stage. She's not trying to appear bada$$ as some others. . She's actually the most credited female in kpop, and I believe Mamamoo as a whole is most credit female group.
HIP is basically about the haters and about acceptance. Many people hated Mamamoo since debut days, because they don't look like a typical Idol group, especially Hwasa, because her skin is darker and she's not skinny. Many things in this MV is a reference to what haters said or why people criticized them. For example, that pants at 11:04. Hwasa got a LOT of hate for wearing that at an airport. Now it's a trend.😆 Also, many people criticized them for not doing hard dance choreos, so they did this to show everyone they can sing and dance at the same time. BTW Wheein, the girl you really like for her airy voice is one of the best dancer in Kpop.
oh yes you are totally right! MAMAMOO is a mature group, even right at the start of their debut years. And you're spot on! MAMAMOO has never shied away in releasing explicit songs, and if you like reading lyrics (MAMAMOO is all about meaningful songs and writing their own lyrics for their songs, being that they're the top credited female group ever, and Moonbyul being the #1 female credits owner in the 3rd generation, and 3rd overall female artist). MAMAMOO almost always have at least 1 song that's of a mature theme in each of their albums, starting from the 2nd album title track, Piano Man. Here's a list of songs that I hope you'd get to check them out! Year, album name, song name 2014 Piano Man - Piano Man 2015 Pink Funky - Um Oh Ah Yeh (not too explicit lyrics wise, but watching the MV what will get you. lol!) 2016 Melting - Words Don't Come Easy (watch the live performance from their concert if you can!) 2016 Memory - Decalcomanie (watch the Mv for extra feels) 2019 Reality in BLACK - High Tension 2020 Travel - Diamond 2022 MIC ON - ILLELLA Songs from the individual member's solo albums Solar: Colors, Honey Moonbyul: Shutdown (and G999 for subtle lyrics) Wheein: Shh (Wheein's new song that's not officially released yet, but she performed it during her recent concert! she's touring USA right now if you're interest to go check her out!) Hwasa: (maknae of the group, though looked like she's the most mature/oldest. she's the only one who doesn't have an explicit lyrics song... yet. Though her last album's title track almost got banned because she wanted to name it I'm a B*tch, and so she renamed it I'm a B)
More Mamamoo, please react to their KILLING VOICE performance. Also the video essay WHY MAMAMOO IS THE MOST UNDERRATED KPOP GROUP is an excellent video the get to know about the group and each member ❤️❤️🦋❤️
Mamamoo is an amazing vocal group. As great as Hip is it isn't their best vocals. You should check out their performance on Killing Voice. You'll get a glimpse of their vocals and some of their title tracks.
Mamamoo is my #1 female group. This song, although very good, showcases only a tiny tiny bit of their vocals. For vocal heavy Mamamoo I'd suggest. 1.Decalcomane 2.Paint Me 3.Where are We Now 4.All of their Immortal Songs performances 5. Killing Voice 6.Immortal Song Medley I'll leave it there for now. Saw them in concert here in Texas last year and was blown away, even though I already knew they have top tier vocals. Don't know if you've already checked out EXO, (my #1 male group in kpop)but, they too are known as Vocal Kings. Their Killing Voice showcases their talent and harmonies. Hope you check them out if you haven't and please more Mamamoo as well.
Amazingly talented vocal group , known for their powerful singing and harmonies ( but not this video lol) Please continue your Mamamoo journey, you will not regret it
