    My father split black locust posts and put them into the ground in the year 1962. I recently visited the old farm. Fence post were standing and various angles. Wire had come loose. But the posts were still solid. I could observe that they were getting thin and "punky" at ground level. Good job.

    Up until the early 1970s my dad and I split black locust for posts. We kept the farm but slowly backed out of farming livestock my mid 80s. Many of those posts are still serviceable. Most of our black locust is now large! 24 to 30 inch diameter.
    We used a post maul to pound the posts into the ground. A long tamping or pry bar was used to wallow a hole. The sharpened post was placed into the hole, held straight and hammered. I think the iron was about 14 to 16 lbs. It you hit the post and it eang you did it right. If it vibrated and went thuubb thubbb, not so good. We did saw the end flat if it wasn't already. We did have a post hole auger for the tractor but we have a steep hilly place.

    I've got locust posts over 70 years old on my place. Sometimes, when a line needs to be straightened, we've had to flip one over and bury the top end for the next 50 years. Redwood posts have done well out here also.

    might try to use this method to enhance my garden edging. I was about to go buy some lumber, but I'm already clearing some trees. Could use the logs if I split and stack em neat enough. cool afternoon project for sure. I'll give it a go.

    It's handy to have an axe handy. An estwing works good. To cut those fibers and they work good for de-barking. I've heard start at the small end. They are less likely to "run-off". Especially when riven crappy logs. Like the one shown , lol.

    Around my pasture there is still a line of posts that are pushing 50 years old. They were put in by my wife great uncles. That said, we have posts that have only lasted 10 years. I think it really depends on the tree.
    Good video btw.

      bogarath I put poplar in the ground when I was doing some temp fencing but I was amazed it lasted less than 3 years. It rotted so quickly. Species makes all the difference. Thanks for watching.

      The trucker who just cleaned up a locust lot for me told his Dad put up a locust fence around their pasture in the fifties and those post are still hard as a rock.

    I just split a green bodark. It took me a lot longer than yours. I think if I let it dry for a couple of weeks before splitting, it would work better.

    Thanks for the upload, looking forward to fence construction. Any news on what type toilet system you have decided on for the retreat? Still smiling over that piece of banana stuck on Liam's face. Nice work.

      yanknoz I think we are going with the vermicomposting toilet. I really like that concept. It is a nice middle ground between septic and composting toilet. Liam doesn't like to have his face on camera so I thought that would be an acceptable way to use him.

    I found this old video, and have a question, or which the internet provides conflicting answers. Can I use Honey Locust for fence posts? USDA/NRCS says yes. Some forums have threads indicating durability. Everyone else is all over the place with the answer to this question.

    Troy, aren’t those posts destined to be installed @ Cliffside Acres? 😜 Tim

      Ah, for sure! Most are in the ground already!

    If you dropped that thing when it was full of white flowers the pigs would’ve really gone nuts stripping the foliage 😂

    Any reason you split the logs rather than cutting them on a bandsaw mill?

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the locust usually have a pretty good curve or twist to them. Milling them wouldn't allow me to quarter them evenly.

    • @timothylongmore7325
      @timothylongmore7325 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedToolHouse thats a good point. They actually split pretty easy too. At least the good ones with few knots. I'd wager a good team , on a cool day could quarter a nice log faster than most could saw them. Locust is notorious for getting dirty and even having dirt imbedded in the bark. Dulls band blades fast.
