The most cruel death in this entire story had to be Faye’s. And they didn’t skip any detail about her death, from her being fully alive while dogs tore through her, to showing her dead body like they were channeling their inner Logan Paul

Yes because you can hear him scream and beg while they tear him apart, pretty brutal in the manga too but it's done in like two vignets and it's more of a general impression

Most don't matter too much but I sort of wish we had the uncensored part with Franz in the anime. It would've added so much more gravity to the situation. I didn't know until right now he was that mangled, I thought he just died, don't ask me how because I don't know because it was never shown, but the fact Hannah so removed from the situation that she is performing cpr on half of a corpse is even more heartbreaking and encapsulates the sense of hopelessness, fear and overall reality of fighting the titans that came after the ignorant cadet's hubris charging blind into the situation.
Yeah that's true I agree with you. I wish they showed it from a better angle but just to let you know it was kind of showed in the anime, Armin was covering the corps but if you looked closely you will see that the dead guy's legs are missing.
You actually can see it in the anime, but it's so subtle that most people miss it.
I remember that I slowly realized half of his body is gone while watching this scene back then (Anime). At first I thought "Okay, he cleary seems to be death, but she desperately tries." and then I perceived what happend to his body and I felt SO sad and nauseaus at the same time. For me this was pure horror.

It would be worse imo. I mean, performing cpr on half of a corpse is just ridiculous. The scene was sad when i watched the anime, but when I saw the original drawing I just started laughing

The scene of Eren cutting his leg and stabbing his eye in the army was a lot better in the anime. He looks too badass in the manga when he jams the bullet in his eye but in the anime u can see the fear in his face. Like imagine fighting against your human survival instinct to do that to yourself. His face really expresses that he needs to do it but is terrified to do so

@@user-iy5ww2hj4pwhile in his human form i think titan shifters feel pain like everyone else. They say in S1 that only titans (not necessarily titan shifters) dont feel any pain. For example, when Eren hits his head while training with ODM Gear (presumably) he feels pain when he hits his head, and he was a titan shifter already.

i think it's broadcast on national television, there are certain rules they have to follow. i saw a video where they compared the TV edition to the bluray release and the latter showed more gore

As much as I liked WiT's animation, I'm happy that MAPPA is animating the final season instead of WiT. Somehow WiT was very cautious and reserved in what they show. In contrast, MAPPA has mostly been brave in adapting the gory scenes and creating a dark, bleak atmosphere during this season.
It's easier to get away with this stuff in the manga.
Mappa isn't "brave," about anything and they didn't create that dark atmosphere. They just adapted the manga drawing and because of time restraints they didn't have the time to create expression templates for the characters, which lead to some weird expressions and overall a depressing mood.
Also it's just that the last part is more gory because it's a total war. Mappa is bound by Japan laws, just like WiT. Half bodies gone during war or Eren's leg blocked by another soldier etc. all Mappa's work. Just like WiT, they are only able show it were they can.
I agree, but then there was also Miche's death, and that was season 2... Which I'd say was pretty frickin' brutal and horrible in the anime, maybe even more than the manga was.
Wit could've just done that as well, it isn't difficult to change the light specifically for season 4, that's just an artistic choice to show a darker story
It also applies context to some scenes, such as when the owl ask grisha if Marley took his balls. They literally did.

For anyone who wonders why they censored, it's all about the hour the episodes get uploaded. The earlier it is, the more censored the graphic scenes have to be most of the time. I've also seen some people pointing out AOT got broadcasted on national television so the rules regarding censorship were more strict.

What about the scene where ramzi gets trampled during the rumbling, that scene is much more graphic and brutal in the manga in my opinion.

I've covered my eyes so often during the anime, now I know that I'll never read the manga. I love AOT but pictures like these haunt me. 😭
Levi actually does force his sword through Zeke's face in the manga it was just quicker. Also we do get to see Zeke's full body when Levi explodes him with the thunder spear. Maybe its only in the blu ray buy there is a version of the anime with both of those scenes not as censored.
Honestly, most of those are for the better. Its better to imply, than show something sometimes. Revealing Franz's missing lower body gradually and not showing immedieately to the viewer what Armin sees made for some of the most memorable scenes in the whole anime for me. Eren cutting his leg and shoving bullet into his eye was also more gruesome due to build-up and tension in the anime, even though it wasnt exactly shown when he did it. Zeke and Levi scenes are also honestly maybe even better, especially putting a blade through his cheek - we were shown what he did. My only concern was, some people thought at the time that he killed him, due to not showing, that he only stabbed his cheek. The ones I would like to have been shown is -> Erwin and scouts being bombarded by Zeke. This is the scene that lacked impact it had in the manga. Smoke covering everything up didnt convey enough that the wounds were very much fatal for Erwin and the rest - and it very much added to the shock value in the manga.
I agree with you and I think the two scenes I would've really wanted to see uncensored are the cut on Gunther's nape (because the idea of a "titan" cutting a humans nape is not only terrifying but it shows how precise this ODM user actually is) as well as Grisha's half eaten body because the idea that Eren's pure titan was too small to fully eat Grisha is pretty brutal. It reminds me of Connie's dad as a titan which Sasha fought with the arrow
Dude no, what are you talking about ? Franz's death is one of the worst examples of Wit's censorship to date, if there were no manga panels for comparison i would have never even known that he was missing half of his body.

@@kptmaci4979 That scene should have been in season 3 when history was ordered to be queen. in the manga, historia refuses Levi's orders, and Levi snaps at historia and forces her to agree to become queen... Well, Indeed, it was actually not needed, but it could be a strong reason why Historia punched Levi at the end of season 3 part 1. But in the anime, Historia doesn't seem to have a good reason to punch Levi and the anime tells that it was Mikasa who incited Historia to punch Levi.

I first saw AOT when I was 11 or 12 so maybe the censoring kept me sane, love this show and seeing all of these comparisons as an adult, I would like to see the blue-rays considering they weren’t censored as much.

Levi's sword in Zeke's face looks more disturbing in the Anime in my oppinion, cus there it looks like it is deep and almost piercing the flesh under his eye socket. In the manga it's just a sword in the eye, technically more gory, but very simple and it doesn't have the same impact I think.

It is comfort anime for a lot of people.
Just like Squid Game/Walking Dead can be somebody’s comfort show - the story is about the characters interacting in dire situations, not the dire situations themselves.
When people choose something as comfort ____ they find comforting seeing some characters around, not the circumstances.
My comfort show in “The Boys” and I would honestly watch it censored (the gore bits) and still be satisfied.
The gore does not make something great - characters and story do.

Franz's death in the manga really hit different. First time I watched the anime I thought Franz was just unconscious but still had an intact body and the girl (I forgot the name) was trying to give him CPR. But when I read the manga it turns out Franz was clearly dead because he had been torn in half but the girl still gave CPR anyway. This is just sad to watch.

When it comes to the Franz scene in particular, I actually think that bit of “censorship” helped sell the horror.
At first, it seems like he may genuinely be recoverable, but we know the guy was tall, so when the scene pans out and we don’t see his legs stretching past Armin’s other side it becomes clear that only half of his body is there.
For an episode emphasizing the “dreadful reality” the recruits had to face that day, it worked quite well.
To me the anim was already gore enough. Still interesting to see the differences tho

I don't know what it's like in the manga, but the scene in Marley during the attack on the Tyburns when that kid gets crushed and trampled was really freaking brutal.
But the most horrific to me is definitely Faye's. Partially because I have a young daughter, but also the idea of a young girl dying in such a way is gut-churning.
I don't think the majaority of these were censorship in the anime so much as they were artistic and stylistic choices. Sometimes things are more impactful when left to the viewer's imagination. The one example I do say is pretty egregious is Gunther's death, I remember being very confused on what the hell even happened to him and assumed Annie broke his neck somehow. That scene was changed in away that was directly confusing
i remember when the first levi vs zeke was animated i was screaming bc of the eye pop (idc about gore or graphic things but do something to eyes, wrists or ankles and jakfhskfusif i get anxious) and when i watched it i was disappointed bc they didn't do it as brutal as the manga

Some of the s4 ones are just wrong or were changed. Zeke's body was uncensored in the Blu-ray as was the beast ripping the head off the titan. And there were bodies with the overhead shot of Falco with legs crushed and stuff like that.
Also, there’s a scene of two kids being killed in the anime (I won’t mention their names for spoilers) and in the anime the younger one’s head is censored but in the manga half his head is gone.
For the most part, it doesn't just omit the brutality, it just covers it up with something else

I'm so glad that I'm currently reading the manga for the first time instead of rewatching the anime. There are so many deaths and injuries where I could never comprehend what the hell even happened cause the anime keeps censoring shit.

Hiding the non-existing body of Franz behind Armin is actually huge, I haven’t noticed that, it fulfills the scene with so much sense.

The manga showed every gory millisecond of people being crushed under the colossal titans’ feet. Their bones breaking and guts pouring out like overstuffed sausages 😨 I did like that the anime showed the utter chaos the rumbling caused. From people looting to whole trains overstuffed with people try to escape
