  • As a holder of unconventional Final Fantasy opinions, hearing this was the creator's favorite had me curious heading into it. With the love for Final Fantasy 7, why did this one standout? Coming out of this experience on the other side, I totally get it. This is story is an EXPERIENCE to put it lightly.

      @@cptwaavy Something about introducing one of my all time favourites to someone that young in today's gaming landscape puts a smile on my face. I think I was even about 12 or 13 when I played it the first time, VII was my first one at just 8 (I put it down for a year because of a certain plank in the Sector 6 slums that I couldn't see to progress lol).
      I'm not sure who I'd say my favourite from IX is, apart from Beatrix being a badass, but I do have a soft spot for Vivi. I was also the philosophical sort, so it was hard not to empathise. Has she finished it yet? If she's able to look past the dated aspects, I suspect it'll stick with her for a while. I think it's one of those games that stood the test of time well.

    Even though everyone seemingly loves this game, I STILL feel it hasn’t gotten its due as one of the great jrpgs ever made. It came out at a really weird time (close to the PS2 launch), and right in the middle of an incredibly prolific period for Final Fantasy. I HIGHLY encourage anyone who hasn’t played this game, to give it a go.

    Final fantasy 9 was Sakaguchi reflecting on the whole series, and his life. He was getting older. He had faced tragedy and sorrow, and wondered how to move forward under all that weight. And it was his friends who kept him going. The “you are not alone” scene is an unforgettable moment that the entire game builds up to.

      “You’re Not Alone” has got to be one of the best melodies that ever came from that game. The whole sequence of Zidane feeling lost, reflecting his time on Gaia, and trying to physically/verbally shut people out of his life only for them to say “screw that and listen to me!” was good story telling.

    The “you are not alone” scene was amazing. But personally, I will never get over the scene between Vivi and one of the black mages where they’re taking about life and death. No background music, just raw emotion. I’m literally tearing as I’m writing this, that scene really holds a special place in my heart, and so does this game. Quina Quen- "I do what I want. You got problem?"
    Quina is the type of character that shows the simplicity of life. That it doesn't have to be as daunting, or difficult, or hard. That it can be as simple as how you want it to be as long as you're true to yourself.
    How you can live life how you want to. That's Quina's input in the narrative, and how they choose to live their life compared to the rest of the party members.
    Edit: I'd also like to add, that Quina also represents the sort of person that lives to experience life and what it brings.
    Lastly, that even if others don't like Quina, I don't think they'd care either way. They live their life how they want to, and that can be respectable.

    • @AdamsLeftyBooks
      @AdamsLeftyBooks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Quina is absolutely a fantastic character. Love their marriage to Vivi too. Rally-Ho!

    • @adiksaff
      @adiksaff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yes! Come here with that justice for Quina! Simple, yet elegant. Also, Quina's perspective is so different from other party members that I find him/her refreshing.
      A standout moment for me is how he/she was the last picked to go tackle a shrine. He/she doesn't bemoan their apparent low social standing with the other party members. The Qu believe that leftovers are a good thing (probably because someone thought to make more than enough food for any unexpected guests). So really maybe changing your perspective could make you much more satisfied in life.
      So overall, Retro Rebound is not wrong. Mechanically, Quina could be described as just made to complete the 4-party squad exactly when he/she is needed (and actually tends to get replaced pretty quickly by other party members more proximal to the story), but does that make him/her any less?

    • @MarcoTalin12
      @MarcoTalin12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Quina is levity.
      FF9's cast is full of serious characters with sad stories. Quina is there a) to help keep the tone from getting too heavy (esp. when Steiner isn't around to be comically serious), and b) to give some perspective that while, yes, things can get sad and dark, you don't have to let it get to you and define you.
      While everyone is having existential crises, Quina is out there just living their best life, showing the player and the party what life is like when you don't let the bad things drive you.

    FFIX Story time!
    When I was 10, I played FFVII for the first time at my friend's house. I liked it, but i remember feeling intrigued by it more than actually enjoying it. I was reading a cheat book at the time that came with a ps1 magazine and it had some tricks and tips for FFVII in it. I remember reading about 'lucky 7s' and thinking "wow, this is like no other game I've played so far" because I had played absolutely ZERO RPGs by this point.
    A few weeks later, I'm in town with my dad at the video game shop, and I'm desperate to get FFVII. They didn't have it, but they DID have a preowned copy of FFIX, which I thought was final fantasy SIX due to not knowing roman numerals and thinking the 'IX' was just an edgy way of writing 'SIX'.
    I was kind of bummed, but it was really cheap and my dad bought it for me after some thinking. The game ended up becoming my favourite game of all time, my favourite final fantasy of all time, and the reason I got into music in the first place, and I'm now a professional musician. The game changed my life.
    Thanks for showing the game some love!

      @@jaretco6423 I feel that the problem isn't that it's slow - the problem is that what happens on the battlefield is almost always late compared to the commands you or the enemies input. And if you play on "Wait" mode (I've always played FFIV to FFXII on Wait Mode, I like to take my time to choose my next action), what is even more aggravating is that what happens on screen completely halts when you're in a menu, even though something should happen because some characters' or enemies' commands were already selected. You have to allow the time to flow again by getting out of the menu for one or two seconds, for the next queued action to perform. Basically, you're always kinda watching the distant past, which might make you select wrong actions (ie you're in the menu to select a white mage's action, absolutely nothing is happening on the battlefield so you decide not to heal because everyone is healthy, but little do you know that an enemy already chose to perform an attack on the whole party... That attack will occur before your white mage's action, effectively making you lose a turn. Infuriating at times). Oh, and when you enter a command, your character will always take a second or two to get into a "ready" stance before doing what you asked them to do, which makes for a completely useless and unpleasant delay. It's the only FF with those faulty behaviors, it's a shame they were too lazy to fix them in this Remaster. Battles being such an important part of an RPG, because of these issues I just cannot rate FF9 higher than FF6, FF7 or FF10.

I love the Ghibli-esque aesthetic and storytelling, the characters are so fun and endearing, even Amarant, whom you pretty much backhanded there at the end ( I always felt like he has both a very cool design and his contrast in world view vs Zidane is very well handled, especially once the roles are reversed and Amarant calls him out on his hypocrisy )

      Fighting was so much more fun in FF VII and VIII...
      Not only could you do all sorts of cool multi-hit attacks... you could build your own characters pretty much anyway you wanted! Especially in VII!
      If you wanted to, you could make Cloud a Paladin, a summoner, a red mage... and change him anytime you wanted!

    Also Quina can be one of the best mages if you take the time to build him/her. Their use is broader than vivi, who’s really only useful at the beginning/end or whenever Steiner is in party. Basically a more magic focused version of Armant. Story-wise, Quina is comic relief.

    I first started played this game when i when i was 11. It changed my life forever. Through FFIX, I met my best friend, and I can remember many nights spent with him playing this gem of a game until 2 and 3 in the morning.
    I was always very shy growing up, and never had many real life friends. Zidane, Vivi and the gang (Although we renamed them with our own special names during our 1st ever playthrough) were my friends...as real as any in real life, while deap down i knew they were just characters...still, to this day, they feel real on a metaphysical level.
    As I grow older and experience my own bouts of grief, lossed loved ones, depression, fear, etc., I look back to Zidane and what he went through. I can honestly say I dont know where I'd be if not for this game. No matter how bad it is, I feel Zidane and the crew patting me on the shoulder and urging me through. This game was a big part of why I became a writer...if I can help one reader the way this game helped me, I'll have succeeded.
    I appreciate what he said about not liking certain characters or aspects of combat, but I dont think this game would have been the same if any of the main characters had been left out...i wouldnt touch a thing on this game, and I hope any potential remake doesnt adapt the characters or story.
    Well, that was quite a ramble.

    Quina (kwin-a) is a reflection on the simplicity life can have when you know what you are and what you want. They're meant to be a juxtaposition to everyone else in the party who is driven by deeper fears or aspirations and bogged down in moral grey areas. Quina wants to support everyone to be as content as they can be. Quina recognises the danger of the journey, but instead of being cowed, they grab a fork. Final Fantasy VI, IX and IV, in that order, are my perfect trinity of Final Fantasy games (special mention to XIII-2 and Type-0, which I actually also really love). Not to say the others are bad in any way (though I'd argue XV is kind of mediocre), but those three hold a special place in my heart. IX's characters and world are really interesting and imaginative and I adore how in-depth some of the character arcs are (admittedly, a few are left by the wayside, as you mentioned). I'd really recommend doing a complete playthrough of Final Fantasy VI when you have time. Though it definitely follows some tropes, I was really surprised at how much depth and maturity the story had and a good number of the character cast are fantastic and really memorable characters who rank among my favourites in the series. It also has my favourite soundtrack of the series (barely beating out IX for me). Hope you continue with more Final Fantasy (and other older game) reviews soon.

    Turn based combat is not dead. Final Fantasy Tactics still holds up extremely well. The real drawback of old Squaresoft games is that they really had no idea how to increase tension in their combat until you got to secret bosses! The majority of Squaresoft/SquareEnix battles are superfluous, and all you need to do to win is mash the "attack" command.
    Turn based combat will never die, because Chess is still played thousands of years later; but it needs to be complex and intelligent enough to make battles difficult. Not too difficult on your fodder enemies, but there should always be the spectre of death/failure looming over you. This way, the combat is compelling, and just like Dark Souls, victory offers you an incredibly satisfying feeling! ✌😁

    This game is litterally my favorite game of all time. No joke, bar none, the one game I could play a hundred times and never hate. And yes the gameplay feels bland at times, the card minigame is annoying, and those damn jumprope and racing minigames can dive off a cliff if you want to get their ultimate prizes. But the story is phenominal. My biggest issue with it is there's just not enough. Characters like Freya, Quina, and especially Amarant had their character arcs cut drastically short to meet time constraints dueing production. If they ever do remake the game (and I really hope they are) I want those arcs extended and fleshed out. I want to have a reason to engauge more with them and see them grow and change through the world rather than just stop their development after the first act and basically be benchwarmers for most of the game.

      @@FurryWulfz I mean the AI is actually kind of ok. You aren’t supposed to “main” a character, you’re supposed to swap between everyone to build up ATB and unleash your abilities or some magic. Whoever you aren’t controlling generally plays defensively until you swap control to them and build up ATB with them. It took me a while to understand that, but the game became a lot more fun that way.
      That being said, I agree about aerial combat. The camera fights against you during aerial combat, and the fact the game has no dedicated jump button is irritating to say the least.
      At the end of the day, I prefer Remake’s battle system, bc the og game didn’t do much to differentiate between characters, and it felt like other FF games just complimented the ATB system better. Such as this game. I still love ATB in og FFVII, but somehow other FF games from the time made it feel more fun imo.

    playing this back in the ps1 era as when i was around 11\12 year old really left a mark.
    i remember coming home from school just to explore, grind some exp, discover some secret, do the chocographies... it was awesome, i never replayed it because i want it to remain a good memory as it still is.
    also because it was the second final fantasy to be translated in my language, a thing that was huge at the time, because as i said, i was very little and my english understanding was veeeeery limited.
    and speaking of translation, damn, the italian team did something magical, they choose to add a very distinct dialect for a lot of characters, Baku for example spoke like he was from sicily, the 3 tantalus "donkeys" talked like they were from Sardegna, Vivi talked LiKe ThIS tHe WhOlE gAmE, Quina and her clan had a very heavy roman accent... it added a lot of extra charme.

    Final Fantasy 6 and 9 are better than 7 and X ! sure 7 was a "ground braking game" but as a Final Fantasy game....6 and 9 are better ! and i actually enjoy turn based battle systems

    FFIX does not look bad. Dated, yes. But those backgrounds are beautiful and the remaster actually made them look worse than the PS1 release because they no longer had the original files to work with. The Moguri Mod makes the game look genuinely gorgeous. Anybody playing this on PC should get it.

    I do enjoy old battle systems. ATB gives it a classic feeling and it's more about strategies.

    “The gameplay is too old.” Oh good lord. Sorry Matty, but I stopped the video right there. That’s a ridiculous statement. If you don’t like turn-based combat then just say it. It’s not too old, it’s just not your taste. And then of course Matty hopes for FVII Remake’s combat. I liked FFVII Remake’s combat, but I liked the original’s combat more. It’s not that one is “old”, it’s that one is turn-based and one is action-based. There’s a difference that the younger generation doesn’t seem to understand because they think everything should be action-based.

    • @wazzupman245
      @wazzupman245 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah its definitely too old. Games like SMT V and Octopath Traveler are turn based but they're way more fun and have more strategy. Turn based combat isn't bad but most Final Fantasy games have boring combat.

      I mostly agree with this. The only thing I would say is that 9 felt a bit slower and stodgier than 7, which felt faster and more fluent. Both turn-based, but 7 just felt more exciting

      The gameplay is pretty dang slow even for turn based though. Turn based isn’t bad hell I enjoy it but the gameplay has aged not so great(still my fav FF game) I think the speed up option helped this game especially for new fans to go back and try some of the older games without getting turned off.

    • @dontworry7440
      @dontworry7440 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Kevin List - Then be offended. Lol. Also, action-based games have been around since the Atari and NES, so I’m not sure why you’re acting like they didn’t exist back when these FF games were made. That’s the point - If you think turn-based is “too slow”, that’s a matter of preference, not because turn-based is “too old”.

    • @blackdragon7038

      If you compare the gameplay to Trails, persona 5 or SMTV, the gameplay is outdated. Not all turn based combat are the same quality. Unfortunately for FF9, it’s the weakest part of the game.

    Can't believe you dissed the battle system! ATB wasn't revolutionary even back then but there is definitely a strategy to beating enemies and there's plenty of ways to make the game challenging even after you know what you're doing -- the Hades quest, for example. And the way you destroyed Quina -- bro, She/he has some of the best abilities in the game, if you bother to eat the right enemies and complete the frog quest -- Frog Drop is lethal doing 9999 damage. Of course, since you were the person who cheated to beat the game on their first playthrough, I doubt you used Blue Magic at all. Freya and Quina can be the best characters in the party (Dragon's Crest too is 9999 every time once you level it up). All that said, thanks for reviewing and playing my favorite all-time game. After all, the story is the best and most emotional ride in the series.

    I understand your opinion on Quina and Amarant - especially since you said you weren't a fan of the combat specifically.
    While their total input on the story and character development could have taken on a bigger role; they're almost like 'hidden' characters from my perspective. Their abilities can be OP to someone who's played the game a few times over.
    As a kid, I always used Dagger, Steiner and Vivi, but in my most recent play through, I switched it up with Eiko, Quina, and Amarant. It was satisfying and.a huge refresh on the combat strategies that I remembered.

    Talking about why FF IX is so special, unique and magic without spoiling anything is sooooooo hard. Just play it and pay attention to every detail. Stop to think what the characters are feeling and why they do the things they do. It's simply one of the best games ever made, because of how human and well developed the characters are.

  • @smokingpixel

    I think the gameplay is still very satisfying thanks to the gameplay loop of getting new gear and then gaining new abilities from it. Always made me want to grind battles for AP. Doesn’t hurt that the battle theme is a banger.
    Also, the battle effects are the best from the PS1 trilogy. The spells and summons look fantastic.

    Also, it’s true, Quina was an odd character and didn’t serve much for the story (some humor, some grounding), but they are easily one of more powerful players you can have. They have the strongest party buff and a guaranteed 9,999 dmg attack if you complete the mini game.
    Quina does have a sort of relational tie to Vivi too, especially if you complete the Stellazio coin side quest.

    In my opinion this was the last truly great final fantasy. 10 was good, 12 is my least liked, 13 had issues, 15 the story is a mess, and 16 was a huge departure from the gameplay in he series. The story in 16 was also far too dark compared to the rest of the series, definitely needed a bit more levity. It weird its like everything after 9 lost a certain charm that the series had. I haven't fallen in love with any characters like I did with characters in 7, 8, and 9. I'm a 36 year old man and Aerith's death still makes me tear up to this day. I think the quality and care in the writing just isn't there like it once was.

    this game ran into an infamous issue: because storage space was so limited on their 90s computers, after the development was finished, they actually deleted the 3-d models that they used to make the background renders in order to make room for another project. Thus when it came time to remaster the game for a PC re-release over a decade later, they didn't have those assets, and were forced to upscale the 480p renders that were stored on the disk instead of re-rendering them, resulting in them being really blurry and gross on any modern HD screens. They literally just didn't have the files they used originally.
    There's actually a fan-made mod that did some AI upscaling to make the environments look better. It's not perfect, but it really helps capture how gorgeous some of the environments and vistas you visit are a lot better, and helps the characters look significantly less out-of-place by virtue of being rendered at a much much higher resolution than the backgrounds they're standing on.
