    wow, Reed (JEFF) makes some really nice utilities for hand planes - I didnt get the Stanley no 4 improvements, Im actually fine with my plane as is, but if you got ahold of an old one with a used up iron. I can see why you wanna upgrade, instead of sourcing a "new" vintage iron.
    I especially like the use of this for skewed irons, I use my tormek for that, but when you have to do those freehand.. ouch, and the angle often has to be precise, if you are off by couple of degrees on the skew, its enough that your plane will take a bigger cut in one side.

    Easy hardware store fix for the o-ring, or opt for two nylon washers with a dab of lithium grease between them.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo

    • @reedplanes728
      @reedplanes728 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The honing guide is best used if it does not ride on the honing surface as the hardened dowels in the guide will wear as you sharpen. I use a wood surface that is the same thickness as the stone of plate used. The guide then can ride on the wood surface parallel to the stone or plate. Included with the guide is a strip of plastic laminate that can be used so that all of the sharpening surface is used with he guide not riding on the stone or plate.

    I've been using honing guides for fifty years and have no plans to change that. Sure, I can sharpen without one and get an edge without one, but a guide gives you THE SAME edge every time. In wood carving it becomes very noticeable when making (or trying to make) an identical cut with two different (even slightly) edge bevels. There seems to be a misconception about what a sharpening guide does. Sure, it can act as a set of training wheels for a beginner at sharpening, but its real value is in the repeatability it provides.

    I have v 1.0, and I like it. The wear points are worn though when I got it. Was that one used In your first video? Or are the wear points partly worn on all of them? Not that it matters as it doesn't affect functionality.

    • @reedplanes728
      @reedplanes728 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      On some of the 1st batch of guides I did lightly sand the hardened dowels that act as the guide as the alignment was off. I believe that is what you are seeing as wear on the hardened dowels would only come from them being on stones. My manufacturing methods have gone through many changes and I think I have the jigs and fixtures where they need to be now.

    Look, I am all for small businesses in our country as much as the next guy but $145 for a guide that only has a small advantage over others of like purposes is a bit much. Searching for honing guides brings a whole world of good tools for around $25 to $75 that will stand up in quality and versatility almost to this one. Justifying that much for a tool that could be achieved by various other tools or by hand and eye... Just a bit too pricey. Love the tool - not the price range.

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Most high end honing guides are in the $150-$200 range.

    • @clydedecker765
      @clydedecker765 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo Agreed there are guides in that range but they are not in the same category considering their added parts and pieces. However the Veritas is at its highest deluxe price at $149. including all guides and attachments. All of the others are cheaper by my searches. Similarly made honing guides to this one fall in the $30 t0 $75 range. Sorry. That is what I can find.

    All these adjustments are made unnecessary if you use a single roller in the middle. As it is, there are (essentially) four points of contact- the two rollers and the two ends of the blade. Only when all four are in contact will the guide operate correctly. As cow milkers learned centuries ago, three points of contact are always stable. If you MUST use twin rollers (and I cannot see why, unless you want to roll each side of the stone) then allow the blade to rotate longitudinally. The difficulty of returning the blade square each time is then eliminated.
    Skew chisels? No problem.

    • @reedplanes728
      @reedplanes728 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good points for blades not as wide as a stone. As I worked through this design I needed a way to hone blades that were wider than the stone and using rollers just did not work for me. That is why I do not have rollers, hone at 90 deg to the stone and can easily accommodate blades wider than my stones.

    • @Tensquaremetreworkshop
      @Tensquaremetreworkshop หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@reedplanes728 If you use a (single) ball roller, you can do this too. Just use a material handling roller.

    • @reedplanes728
      @reedplanes728 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Tensquaremetreworkshop I tried those in my early prototypes and I as well as my testers did not like they way they worked. Have you had better success?

    • @Tensquaremetreworkshop
      @Tensquaremetreworkshop หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@reedplanes728 I use a single centre roller. All my blades fit across the stone. I have considered a single pivot point on a vertical bar (adjustable height to adjust grind angle) that can pivot longitudinally. Sharpening would then be by sweeping the blade in an arc across the stone. If the assembly allowed movement blade longwise, it means that figure of 8 motion (or any other) would be supported at the correct angle. I must get back to designing that... (I do not believe anyone can hand hold a blade to an accuracy of a degree.) If you are interested, I can share.
