Is there a guide book on how to keep a trapdoor spider I have always liked this type of spider and I am looking to get one as a pet it will be my first spider ever as a pet
same brother!, its cool dark and peaceful in here, the light burns my eyes when i come out in day ^^ hahahaah!! only food can lure me out of my man cave.
Something that makes liphistiids very special: their abdomens are segmented by plates, which is believed to be an ancient characteristic of many extinct spiders. Essentially, these guys are living fossils that give us a glimpse of spiders past!
A cool note on the _Liphistius sp. Khao Luang:_ It belongs to the spider suborder of Mesothelae, which basically makes it the most primitive type of spider that exists. There are two suborders of the order Araneae (the spiders): the Opisthothelae, and the Mesothelae. The Opisthothelae suborder is further broken down into the Araneomorphae infraorder (so called “true spiders”), and the Mygalomorphae infraorder (which includes tarantulas, most trapdoor spiders, funnel web spiders, purse web spiders, etc.). The Mesothelae are the most primitive, and can be most easily distinguished from Mygalomorph spiders (the second most primitive) in that they have segmented abdomens (or opisthosomas), almost like ants. Like the Mygalomorphs, Mesothelae have downward-facing chelicerae, or fangs, instead of inward facing ones like the Araneomorphs (“true spiders”), have two pairs of book lungs, and no tracheae. Today, there is only one extant family of Mesothelae, the _Liphistiidae,_ which consists of 8 recognized genera. All extant species are found in Southeast Asia.
Super unique spider, probably my number 1 dream species but because I live in Australia we can’t keep them… we do have a huge range of diversity when it comes to trapdoors and all mygalomorphae, more than any country I’d wager.
the way trapdaoors eat reminds me of my two lil garder snakes, they dug a system of tunnels all through the dirt of theyre enclouser and when they wanted food theyd poke theyre heads out and stare at me and dad till me feed them, ^^ it got to were we learned about when theyd want food and so we would just hang a worm bug or slug and just brush the grass with it, and in seconds the lil guys would pop theyre heads out of holes and suck the prey down under ground cutest lil gravoids i ever saw.
These are all very interesting! I’ve been putting water down in my enclosures before adding water, definitely helps to keep moisture down deep as it would be in nature! Excited that Tom has a website, have never been able to get an email response about what’s available and now it’ll be easily available!
All three of them a gorgeous. I just wish your videos were a little bit longer.. it's like once I get into them it's over 😢 but either way it's a great video kat thank you
I never thought about getting a spider before this video other than maybe jumping spiders but now im falling deeply in love with these trap door spiders. they seem so low effort compared to fish, birds, snakes and even my cats. hmmm this could start me into the spider hobby and take away some fear i have over them :) loved the little baby running to its hideaway soo cute!!
Temporary jumping spider tattoos?!?!? Oh my gentle Jesus!! I have to get some!! =) thank you Kat for always providing great content! I always look forward to it! ❤❤
I’ve been watching your channel for a little while now and between you and exoticsLair I’ve been heavily inspired to own Ts. I’ve never once thought I’ll have a tarantula until about a year and half/2 years ago since I came across your channel. My partner has recently bought me 2 slings, so I have 2 baby Psalmopoeus victori -Darth Maul. I’m hoping they both survive into adulthood as I imagine it feels extremely rewarding. But I just want to thank you because in all honesty I’d never felt excitement like I did when receiving my spiders. If you’ve got any tips I’d be extremely appreciated, I know they’re not a “beginner” species so again, any advice welcome ❤
Hey Kat,so I got a baby baboon tarantula and I rescued him and he lost two legs one pedipalp and one leg and I'm a beginner with tarantulas and I was very surprised that he's not aggressive and is very friendly. He/she is super sweet. I am in South Africa btw so they are from here. ❤️
I loved them all but that last one was so adorable!!! I mean...how do they even carry those fangs🤣🤣. The second one was gorgeous. Reminded me of Imiras. Great video Kat. Tyfs God bless you
I’m convinced I’m actually a trapdoor spider. I get grumpy when I’m bothered, I like to hide out in my cave of solitude as much as possible generally only coming out to eat/work. If overly bothered I will strike out. 🤣
I got myself a cyclocosmia torreya after seeing your old vid and I love it and it's still alive bug g o d do I wish I could see it more often outside of our quarterly wellness check lol
5:57 “I’m sorry I’ve angered you” Spider- “how would you like if I just picked your house up and destroyed it with metal tweezers!? How bout a BITE!!??” 😂
you could do the trick where you make them a hole yourself with straws and then they should find it eventually and make their own cover so you can monitor them, i see a lot of people with trapdoors use that method!
The first trapdoor you did had me thinking it was an Australian Sydney funnel web as they are similar to trapdoors but don't make their burrows in the dirt and just like your trapdoors they are very aggressive
OMG! They are so cool! Especially that teeny tiny one! I know you’ll enjoy them all. Kat, do you still have your Velvet spider? I’ve wanted one for so long, and just wondering how yours was doing.
There’s a lot of trapdoor spiders that live around here, there fun to watch catch bugs I put at the trip lines of their burrows. Lot of tarantulas from time to time, depending on how many tarantula wasp hatch out each year.
Atmetochilus songsangchotei is a thailand funnel web not a trapdoor, I've got 2 Macrothele taiwanensis atm and I've kept M. gigas (Japanese Giant Funnel Web)
I really love learning about trap doors but like you, I’m afraid I’ll never see one again if I get it lol. Have you gotten the book “Spiders of the World: A Natural History?” It’s really cool and engaging and has many pictures with descriptions too. My favorite was about a spider that lives in forests and covers itself in moss and lichen to hide. ❤️the picture of it covered in moss is adorable.
I'm watching the tiny guy slide down into the hole Kat made, and my boyfriend walks in: "every time I walk in here, you're watching some animal's butt." I mean... he ain't wrong. Spider butts, corgi butts, scorpion telsons, whale live birth... do I have a problem? >_>
Thank you Tom!

You would be pretty peeved too if someone tore your home in half with giant pairs of forceps
Trapdoor spiders are so relatable, only come out of their pit when they're hungry 😂
same brother!, its cool dark and peaceful in here, the light burns my eyes when i come out in day ^^ hahahaah!! only food can lure me out of my man cave.
Like introverts. 😂🤪
Even then, they only emerge if food happens to walk by, then right back to their little hidey hole haha
angry and threat posturing
Hey! I resemble that remark!!! 😂😂😂😂

5:55 All of us when disturbed from our toasty blankets. You DARE disturb my toasty slumber! I am ANGY!! 🕷
The pokemon edit at 5:56 sent me 😂 I really like the look of this trapdoor species!

Glad to hear they’re in Southeast Asia’s and not here in the US!
Stay way away!
They're all gorgeous, but the last one definitely was the star of the show. Thanks for sharing these little beauty's with us.
The lil baby with huge fangs is ADORABLE!! Would LOVE to see stickers or tattoos of him/her!!!!!!!!!!!
Angry, helpless, and hungry… sounds like when my husband describes me 😂
the way trapdaoors eat reminds me of my two lil garder snakes, they dug a system of tunnels all through the dirt of theyre enclouser and when they wanted food theyd poke theyre heads out and stare at me and dad till me feed them, ^^ it got to were we learned about when theyd want food and so we would just hang a worm bug or slug and just brush the grass with it, and in seconds the lil guys would pop theyre heads out of holes and suck the prey down under ground cutest lil gravoids i ever saw.
Aren’t they just the sweetest angry little trapdoors 😂😂🕷️🕷️🕷️💕

Love how excited you get unboxing new spiders! 😂 so much fun to watch!
I LOVE this video! Trapdoors are some of my favorites, especially because of how angry they are.
That Itty bitty baby 😍
Cracked me up at the end though because they were like "Bye Bisch, I'm going back to sleep!" 😆
Omg that first trapdoor was like the ghost chilli of spiders. Soooooo freaking spicy lol

@@tarantulakatI love your content! I'm a new fan
I'm not a big fan of arachnids, but I like jumping spiders. They are smol, and cute, and hop around. 10/10, would not kill.
What my neighbors see when I come out to grab my DoorDash after not opening the door in weeks.
Great vid Kat cant wait for the updates ...

The one that builds trip wires is so cool. Evolution made that happen and it's so cool spiders are scary, but so interesting.
I loved them all but that last one was so adorable!!! I mean...how do they even carry those fangs🤣🤣. The second one was gorgeous. Reminded me of Imiras. Great video Kat. Tyfs God bless you
This makes me want to add a trapdoor to my collection ! Cool video as always!
I’m convinced I’m actually a trapdoor spider. I get grumpy when I’m bothered, I like to hide out in my cave of solitude as much as possible generally only coming out to eat/work. If overly bothered I will strike out. 🤣
Maddy, I don't see why not if people can identify as cats' dogs horses. You go ahead and be the best trap door spider that you can be
Those jumping spider tattoos are awesome!
Those trap doors freak me out lol. Nice video Kat
I was waiting for it to jump out, arms up, fangs out, "AYE! Shut the door!"
I was not disappointed.
Dunno why, but you saying "I actually did a little digging" in trapdoor vid made me laugh 😃
its the cutest thing ever seeing such a tiny creature giving it large lol acting like hulk 😆
I got myself a cyclocosmia torreya after seeing your old vid and I love it and it's still alive bug g o d do I wish I could see it more often outside of our quarterly wellness check lol
What!! That’s amazing!
How do you check? Do you dig him up? I have one and I have yet to dig him up to check on him.
5:57 “I’m sorry I’ve angered you”
Spider- “how would you like if I just picked your house up and destroyed it with metal tweezers!? How bout a BITE!!??” 😂

This was fun! Thanks! They are so very angry 😅😂
That’s going to be your next tattoo, I’ll bet! Looks good!

12:02 Goodbye my lover by James Blunt starts playing.

Schrodinger's spiders must be hard to keep.
The baby trapdoor tarantula🥺
I can relate to them,I stay in my home until I’m hungry. Then they deliver food!😂
That pokemon theme killed me 🤣
Trapdoor spiders are the Schrodinger's cat of spiders.
I would love to have some spider stickers for my desk collection lol
Hats off to all u spider lovers they terrified me. 🕷
Out of all spiders, Trapdoors are like the least active. Definitely strange choice for a pet, I say this as a spider nerd myself.
TRAPDOOR SPIDERRRR
It’s not mad, its scared
