  • This Norman church of St Edburga at Leigh was built by Benedictine monks from Pershore Abbey in 1100, having been granted the land by King Edgar in 972 AD, and they dedicated the church to St Edburga - one of the patron saints of Pershore Abbey. Edburga, the grand-daughter of Alfred the Great, avowed a life of prayer and sanctity, rejecting the jewels and adornments of a Saxon princess. Her Feast day is celebrated on June 15th. I just told my wife if I were to pass away I want her to find some giant field or stadium such as Woodstock or River Plate in Argentina. Fill it full of pipes, compressors, amps and speakers. I want you to play this for me after I die. And I want it played so loud that the very Angels in Heaven will walk by and say excellent choice! I am not making fun of anyone or anything here! I have visited Heaven three times. And I tell you this, your playing brings back some memories of the singing and music that I heard while I was in Heaven! Brother, people here on this Earth have no idea what awaits them after they die! Unfortunately for some, it will not be a pleasant surprise. For others innumerable joy! And most of all we get to be with our Heavenly Father and Jesus! The second part you played on the pipe organ was that the song You Raise Me Up? If it wasn’t you really should consider playing it on that pipe organ! I’m going to but your cd after I post this! Thank You Terry Miles for bringing such joy to an old man’s ears!

Our Maestro Miles never ever disappoints. Terry I love these trips you take away from the world famous Miles Music Nation broadcast studios in Hackney and show the wonderful treasures of your wonderful country. I ask again that if we here in the USA were to apologize to the Queen for that little tea episode we had in Boston could we come back to the UK? Generous Jesus is must for all houses of worship that celebrate Jesus Christ. Thank you Terry for once again for showing your world. Terry you need a pipe organ in your studios. The neighbors will love it. Long Live the Palm Tree 🌴

I loved this video , the whole atmosphere reminded me of my youth when I used to go to Sunday school and chapel in a small village in Devon , we were made to go by my parents and at the time I did not think much of it , only now do I realise the grounding it gave me in respecting other peoples views and hopefully to be a good ( but not perfect) citizen . Even though I do not regularly attend church this makes me realise that whatever your view on religion and beliefs, churches in England , Scotland ,wales and Northern Ireland are a big part of our history and should be used and preserved for future generations.

loved to hear your playing on the church organs reminds me of the 1940's when I was caught playing swing on the organ in the church at North Baddesly in Hampshire by the Vicar (most disapproving) - moved to Tasmania, (Australia) in the late 1950's and got caught again playing on the organ at Buckland assisted by two young lady tourists from Canada doing the manual pumping - many happy memories but at 90 years old I am a little bit past those escapades but was entranced to find you while 'Googlig' at 1.00am Aus Time. Will be looking out for much more - PS - I am still singing along with my wife around the Country Music Clubs aroundd Australia

Thanks for the tour. Gotta love the wooden joinery of the entry. I wonder when that part dates to? It's wood so likely not original but still joinery, no nails except trenails or tree nails. Adding recorded music while touring the church was a nice touch too. Nice "newer" organ there. Has a good sound for the space. Wonder what the old one was like, did it have one? Good selections too. I'm surprised with all the volume in the space the reverberation time is not longer. You could play at a reasonable pace for your music choices. Great to see you exploring churches again.

Not just a monastic build but the nave arcade of arches shows a French influence (in the style) as found in the choir of Canterbury cathedral. Lets hear some organ playing first.
The online text about the church says - "The Norman church of St Edburga at Leigh was built by Benedictine monks from Pershore Abbey in 1100, having been granted the land by King Edgar in 972 AD, and they dedicated the church to St Edburga - one of the patron saints of Pershore Abbey. Edburga, the grand-daughter of Alfred the Great, avowed a life of prayer and sanctity, rejecting the jewels and adornments of a Saxon princess." British History Online gives the nave and west part of the chancel 1100 and the nave south arcade (inserted) of 4 bays and chancel arch (ditto) dated 1180 - now that sounds good and it fits with the style. Note the white stone of the arcade which could be Caen stone from Normandy and contrasts with the reddish warm local rubble built sandstone. The remaining nave east and north walls may sit on earlier footings, pre 1100 and may exhibit pre-conquest work but that I must leave to architects more local than me. The Font is 12th Century and a very interesting decorated Norman heavy monolithic design, with chevrons.

Didn't know this was appearing yesterday as I would have joined when it went up. I have however, caught it on the replay. 😊 Absolutely love your church quests Terry, thanks for sharing your wonderful finds with us all. It really is lovely to see all the amazing venues you visit around the UK and I'm sure each and every person in those venues are so lucky to witness your superb talent right in front of them! Another great video as always. 👍👍 See you all on Thursday.
