@@williamgay3 They are trained military personnel, and they could certainly be lethal with their good command of large well-trained mounts and big swords. However, they would avail nothing in defense against modern over-the-counter weapons, and even a well-aimed surprise machete attack to first topple the horse would take them out, and certainly a grenade would. That is why the area is simultaneously patrolled by heavily-armed modern military guards to protect the mounted guard as well as the royal residences and personnel. Clearly, the mounted guard is there for ceremonial reasons, 1) to appeal to domestic and international tourists whose funding is a critical part of England's economy, 2) to use pageantry to keep alive sanitized popular notions of the breadth and depth of the historical impact of the British Empire on the peoples of the world (covering up the killing of 165 million Indians, hundreds of thousands of Kenyans and other indigenous peoples, causing the butchery of Palestinians through support for racist Zionists, violently exploiting the lands and labor of Ireland and Scotland to the point of forcing many of our ancestors out of our homelands into the diaspora, etc.) While a tiny percentage of the tourists can be discourteous, the steady criticism of them as a whole as rude and stupid is very unfair and often hypocritical and zenophobic. The signs posted that warn that horses can bite and kick and that forbid tourists to touch the reins are only in English, and most of the tourists do not come from the elite economic classes that give members access to horses, so they don't understand signs of agitation. The tourists are often in awe at being near such gorgeous creatures, maybe for the only time in their lives, and every species of animal instinctively seeks to touch what it loves. It is sickening to see the contempt shown by some guards and many commenters for the unwitting tourists who clearly mean no harm and whose interest actually honors the myth of England, especially considering that the British tourism industry invites them to enjoy themselves. Shame!

Too many tourists think it’s all about their photo op. The horses are there to protect the ministry of defense (MOD). it is an honor for them to stand there for an hour. The horse clearly is upset about something. Every horse that stands guard has spent hours and hours and hours training for that job. Most of them are very spirited animals. They have a better life than all of us also every horse is different and they have different reactions to some things, on day they are scared of a branch or another day of their own tail. The bridle didn’t fit correctly on that horse the noseband was so tight and the horse was flushing it’s tail it shows signs of discomfort or stress or any kind they are feeling, they aren’t abused and being slaves for us.

Also, how do you know that it takes forever for their mouths to be attended to? I have seen videos of regular on-duty checks on bridles, mouths and girths to ensure that the horses are kept comfortable. These only stand sentry duty for an hour at a time and they get thoroughly checked our and rested..

No sensitive horse should be near the public. this is just another example of untrained horses being asked to do something they are not trained to do. The whole practice needs to be stopped because of inadequate training of the horses and riders put the horses, riders and the public at risk. And its all because they want to make money off tourists. Law enforcement mounts in the US are trained to be calm in dangerous, chaotic situations and there is no reason that the horses used in the UK for ceremonies and display can't also be trained. Its called "bomb proofing" or desensitizing.

I'm suspecting how brazen and pushy crowds are these days. Since they're trained for crowd control (in part) having people constantly push in puts the horses on CONSTANT 'high alert'. Ask any soldier/ veteran: being on high alert constantly wears on you. Horses and other animals experience that too. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the stress of people pushing those boundaries constantly that's causing them uptick in visual discomfort cues from the horses.

They can't have something like a rope in front of them (which will slow down their reaction time and put both the guard and the horses lives at risk), so instead they simply have to hope that people aren't idiots for once and understand that those horses are just as much a soldier as the guard riding them- that hopefully people understand they both are NOT tourist attractions, they're trained to defend those grounds by any means necessary should the time come. I hope this helps

These guys/ladies have such good horsemanship and horses are so well trained and behaved given ppl get in their space and do the wrong thing. Ppl are disrespectful to both the horse and rider. The pure fact they stand in one spot for long periods it shows how in control both members of the team are. Plus boredom is real and I think that's why they do get mouthy but don't blame them. If a person was asked to do that with all the noises, distraction and ppl being disrespectful... they would get fed up. It's not a normal thing for horses to fill these types of duties. If one of mine was one he would think it's a game. He's a smoocher but he would lick, fart, steal food, inturupt selfies etc but I always worry when in formation if one rares and rider or horse go over about the swords.
