This is one of the few great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want to Be with You", "I'll Try Anything", "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "Wishin' and Hopin' ", "The Look of Love", "The Windmills of Your Mind" & many more.

The Motown tour chose Dusty as their hostess and co-star when they did a TV special in London in the 1960's - they classed her as an ally and an equal

    • @Russ_Keith
      @Russ_Keith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

That Motown special was Dusty's idea. She had met some of them when she on the bill with them in New York. She hosted the show Ready, Steady Go from time to time and virtually badgered her manager who was the show's producer into taking the show over for that Motown Special while they were touring Britain. They credited her for a lot of the success of that tour.

Looking at the week this song peaked in the US (January 18, 1969), the Top 40 had this, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Elvis, Steppenwolf, and crooner Bobby Vinton.

    Love your reaction videos.
Dusty was a legend, a true great and a total professional, both in the studio and as a live performer.
A gay icon (and a lesbian, herself) she was arguably Britain's first great female soul singer, although she could sing in a variety of styles adding unique touches to the songs she sang.
There is a story, whether true, or not, that audiences hearing her, for the first time on the radio, in the U.S. assumed that she was black.
She was a massive Motown fan and championed Motown artists when they came to the U.K. and had them appear and performed with her,on a TV special and was a great friend of Martha Reeves.
She also refused to perform in Apartheid South Africa.
She lived quite a troubled life, suffering from alcohol addition and overcoming it and later succumbing to cancer.
Of her many hits, two of the most epic numbers to check out are:
"Goin' Back" (written by Goffin/King) and "I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten!".
But, for me also, some of her later stuff, is of note.
Not long before she died, she performed flawlessly on the Jools Holland show (with Alison Moyet and Sinead O'Connor on backing vocals)
This is a real gem of a performance.

I feel so lucky to have grown up in this era of music (60s and early 70s). We had Motown, British Invasion, then all the great 70s music. Great era, i miss it!

Along with reviving John Travolta's and Bruce Willis's career, "Pulp Fiction" rescued this song from relative obscurity too. I used to listed to the Oldies station at my work desk a lot when that movie came out. They played a few other Dusty songs, but never heard this one. The "Pulp Fiction" came, which I saw opening night, and this song entered the rotation almost immediately after and never left! Such a great sultry song.

Dusty was a great star in the swingin' sixties from Britain. Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien was from Irish descent and had a great career in the mid-to late 60's. She had a comeback in the 80's with Pet Shop Boys. Check out "What Have I Done To Deserve This" official music video (Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield. Son Of A Preacher Man was my favorite.

Dusty is British. Went Memphis to record this hit. Aretha Franklin turned it down because she thought the song was disrespectful. Probably because her father was a minister.

In the south,it's common knowledge for father's to keep their daughters as far away from preachers sons as possible.I was around 13 and my dad found out I was hanging out with our preachers son and the day he found out was the last day I saw him outside of church.

Aretha Franklin was in an elevator at a Las Vegas hotel that Dusty Springfield entered. They saw each other and smiled. After a few moments Aretha said to Dusty (others heard) -- "Ms. Springfield, you are truly my sister as a singer."
What a compliment. And Springfield does have the pipes. A similar compliment was paid by Ray Charles to Joe Cocker.
This album was recorded at American Recording Studios in Memphis (& tweaked at Atlantic Studios in NYC) during the same time Elvis worked on his classic LP "From Elvis In Memphis". Both were released in early 1969. Both were huge successes.
Some of the same musicians on the Elvis session were used in Dusty's session.
The female vocal backup on Dusty's album was The Sweet Inspirations (who also worked with Elvis on previous albums). RIP Dusty.

Highly recommend the Pet Shop Boys' What Have I Done to Deserve This? because Dusty Springfield supplied vocals to it (late-80s) and it introduced her -- and this song -- to a whole new generation.

The Memphis Sound. She used the same studios and musicians as Elvis did when he recorded his "Elvis in Memphis" albums. Those guys are legendary. The horn section was a trademark of those producers and arrangers.

The song was constructed in the style of Gospel.. repeated "yes he was" rising in tone and intensity alternating with the background singers (choir). Ray Charles was famous for bringing it to wider audiences. Little Richard and Others did it too, but most used innuendos and double entendres. Dusty, Ray, and Little Richard just laid it right out there in the open.

Dusty was one of the biggest female artists of the 60s and had a number of hits in America & Britain. She and the Beatles were the biggest acts of the British Invasion. Check out I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, The Look of Love, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, Spooky. Many more. She also had a #1 hit in the 80s with the Pet Shop Boys, a great track called What Have I Done to Deserve This?

Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien (16 April 1939 - 2 March 1999), known professionally as Dusty Springfield, was an English singer whose career spanned over five decades. ... In January 1994, while recording her penultimate album, A Very Fine Love, in Nashville, Tennessee, Springfield began feeling ill. When she returned to England a few months later, her physicians diagnosed her with breast cancer. She received months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and the cancer was found to be in remission. In 1995, in apparent good health, Springfield set about promoting the album, which was released that year. By mid-1996, the cancer had returned, and despite vigorous treatments, she died in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, on 2 March 1999, several weeks before her 60th birthday. Her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame occurred two weeks after her death. Her friend Elton John helped induct her into the Hall of Fame, declaring: "I'm biased, but I just think she was the greatest white singer there ever has been ... every song she sang, she claimed as her own." Springfield's funeral service was attended by hundreds of fans and people from the music business, including Elvis Costello, Lulu and the Pet Shop Boys. It was a Catholic funeral, which took place at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Henley-on-Thames, where Springfield had lived during her last years. A marker dedicated to her memory was placed in the church graveyard. In accordance with Springfield's wishes, she was cremated and some of her ashes were buried at Henley, while the rest were scattered by her brother, Tom Springfield, at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
