You are spot on about how every old bike has a different starting procedure. When buying an old Harley, have the owner start it cold and pay attention. It'll save a lot of time and kicking trying to figure it out yourself.
This is the perfect image of the bike Id always dreamt of building. Ive already got a handful of assorted projects crying out for attention though. Maybe someday if I live to be 105! Nice to see someone create such a tasteful, nicely thought out piece of machinery that Id be proud to say Id built.
Your videos are off the chart cool man! The bike you show are amazeing and such a joy for the harley enthusiast. Great job, great work love your passion brother keep these videos coming.
Got to say I've really enjoyed the videos. I've been working and building shovelheads just got my first panhead to bring back to life thanks for all the great info. Been really helpful
Thank you for an amusing interesting Vid !. I had never heard a knucklehead engine run. Seen pictures of them but never heard one run. Attractive bike with a beautiful engine. Cheers..
Hey it's a 1940! I'm surprised it still exists, at all. I never had a motorcycle, or license, but I love these kinds of Choppers/Bobbers, or whatever they're called. Very cool.
That is the love-hate relationship right there. Nothing feels better than when you finally fire that. The suck part is you have to find jeans that are one size bigger in the right leg. Sick bike though. Love to have it..
in '64, dude in my neighborhood had knucklehead chop & use to get 5-6 kids to push it to pop start. After 60minutes they were panting like dogs on a hot summer day lol
Just like my old shovel .had it rebuilt and Had a hell of time kicking it... But dang! When it was broken in after maybe 1000 mi. I said to myself .. I was wrong thinking that old cat ripped me off... You gots to know what gets her going .just like your woman. its a harley man! 15 years later she's still purring
They are hard as hell to start on a cold morning, they leak oil, every nut and bolt will vibrate loose over time, thing just craps at the worst time and still old Harleys are the best.
Why I didn't buy but wanted so bad an immaculate Duo-glide pan. Gamey right leg and kickers just don't mix. My first drive out on a Harley in my teens was a 47 knuck. It was all over after that. It was true love. That's a picture perfect example of what a knuck bobber should be. Less is more.
i'm sorry if I got this wrong but did you say that bike can't run at 60 65 mph? Is that something to do with the oil pressure? I remember in a different video you mentioned back in the day you couldn't cruise 70 with a knuckle. That was the nice thing about a shovel. I know very little about vintage bikes so excuse my dumbedness.
You have to modify the oil system and build one hell of a good motor to make these reliable for a steady cruising speed of 70. They were never intended to do that
Hey Todd, been awhile, looks great but like you said, not a ninja, lol... I still have my 75 and who knows, maybe someday after watching your vids I might figure it out enough to make it run right? I'm hardly green around the ears but this is my first shovel, thankfully I have my "carburetor'd" 2005 for those moments I need for sweetums!
when I turned off the camera, that is the 1st thing I checked. It was starved for gas. The way a bike starts has everything to do with who tuned it. Larry Suttle built this machine. This one, with the tuning it has, turned out to like starting with the choke open only one click. Also had to ride it with the choke on until really warm. Not the best tune up.
So, does that clutch work like a car? Just let it out and she goes? Is the trans the same as a regular knuckle? Just move it forward and back? What's the difference between "jockey shift" and a regular tank shift harley? Do you have to have it in neutral when you come to a stop? Confused...
trans is the same, clutch feel is somewhat similar to a car, jockey shift has a lever that goes up and down, a stock tank shift has the shifter mounted on the tank, how the clutch works on a tank shift varies. It is easier to have in neutral when you stop, not mandatory
whatever frame we get the bike with. If I had to buy all the parts and sell like that, the cost would be over 50K because parts are so expensive. So far, bobber's are not worth that much for which I am greatful
Beautiful bike, man; I'm just getting started on trying to build one, I'm not green to ridin' but I'm green on Harley's. Can I ask the details of the bike? Like rake, stretch, fork (4, 6, over, etc.)
HuntingHarleys Gotcha. I saw some seagulls then I saw one of the plates and put two into together. You guys doing outstanding job. Just need you on the East Coast ha ha
It's called being familiar with the machine..each bike starts differently. If you know the machine from personal experience, then you know exactly what it wants to start up
The fact someone put a Panhead top end onto a sportster lower end does not make the driving of one much different from any other. Either you have foot shifter or hand shift, with either a foot clutch or hand clutch. If you know how to ride, it is not a big deal either way

I only have two motor's for sale, both Knucklehead's. Motor's of any type are very hard to come by. I've not had any Panhead motor's for sale for over 20 years now.
....its a shame the previous mechanic did a shitty job tuning this, its a fine looking ride, sounds like you have it running sweetly now!!, im used to old b.s.a twins and russian sidevalvers😀,
Did you check to see if it's getting a spark? ... Maybe the key is not on....It could be out of gas. You may proceed to tell me what you think of this comment...lol Nice bike!
It is called 1st taking it to Larry Suttle for a built the bike, who promptly pretending to tune it up and rebuild the carb (not to mention nuts and bolts were missing or loose and te bike had TONS of issues) and charge me money for work not done properly. I then took it to another mechanic who did the work correctly and the bike started and ran fine. There is another video of that here on the tube. Hunting Harley's, 1940 Knuckle bobber revisited
Probably the coolest bike I've ever seen.
The war was over when it finally started.
Flatheads were used in military bikes (WLA) due to better relability.
Its "the handshake" of the bike.
I like that! "Do 65.... see why it breaks". I have triumphs that are the same way!!
It started when the Korea war broke out!
Ah the joys of kick-only bikes, and then when you're alone in your garage it starts first kick haha.
MR ... ain't that the truth...lol... been there done that

true enough that, all women have their sweet spot and each is different and just like a Knuckle, they won't tell you, you have to figure it out
@gemini232003 gotta takem' out and ridem' They keep working that way.
Your videos are off the chart cool man! The bike you show are amazeing and such a joy for the harley enthusiast. Great job, great work love your passion brother keep these videos coming.
you really made me laugh. i rode rigid pans for 20 years. yep..you gotta find out what the ol girl wants.
Thank you for the effort. Good to see even top notch machines like this showing their "personalities" while starting.
That's a great bike. I believe you have the best job in the world. Thanks for sharing.
Got to say I've really enjoyed the videos. I've been working and building shovelheads just got my first panhead to bring back to life thanks for all the great info. Been really helpful
glad you like the vids!
Thank you for an amusing interesting Vid !. I had never heard a knucklehead engine run. Seen pictures of them but never heard one run. Attractive bike with a beautiful engine. Cheers..
It's not how fast you get there it's HOW you get there.....nice looking bike. Thank you for sharing another great vid.
I 've watch you for awhile you have the sweetest bikes .baddass bikes I think an best bikes.
Great Looking Bike.
I really like watching your vids and the stories and history
Hey it's a 1940! I'm surprised it still exists, at all. I never had a motorcycle, or license, but I love these kinds of Choppers/Bobbers, or whatever they're called. Very cool.
+jack Inwonderland, that depends on the market and too many other forces. The prices are all over the place. This one sold a long time ago.
Great antitheft feature on the kickstart.
I wouldn't go Robin no banks on it
Ha ha!
you could leave it on lol
That is the love-hate relationship right there. Nothing feels better than when you finally fire that. The suck part is you have to find jeans that are one size bigger in the right leg. Sick bike though. Love to have it..
we all had these bikes when the boys got back fron Nam first thing a panhead chopper ridged easyest bikes in the world to work on and ride
That's nice bike I dig it.thanks for showing KOOL.
in '64, dude in my neighborhood had knucklehead chop & use to get 5-6 kids to push it to pop start.
After 60minutes they were panting like dogs on a hot summer day lol
Beautiful bike, bit of a bugger to start lol I had an old Shovel like that great leg muscles on one side.
Always great videos,,thanks for you time to make them,,
I love old Knuckleheads bobbers. Perfection!
Beautiful bike literally in the image of what i want to build
Worth the wait and effort to hear it.Nice job buddy!!!
finding the sweet spot that makes them go,,
.thanks Todd for the badass bike videos love the bike
The joys of an old bike 😅❤
They are hard as hell to start on a cold morning, they leak oil, every nut and bolt will vibrate loose over time, thing just craps at the worst time and still old Harleys are the best.
Thank you for sharing theses bikes
Love the looks of this bike but my god if I was stuck out at a truck stop I would have a hell of a time getting her fired up.
Familiarity. Once you learn the little quirks of the specific machine, you don't have an issue firing them up.
I lov the way u come alve whn the iron horse cimes alive.. deal with it Bro !!
How can people down vote this video? That’s real Skool old world Harley.
They make electric starters now for the early ones
A perfect lookin and soundin bobber
What she needs is a... ROAD TRIP !! and your right, every gal likes it her own way.
I like that Springer front end.
women are like that too,,
A mechanical masterpiece.
Man, this thing is beautiful
Must be cool riding from gas station to gas station. Plus so easy to start.
personally, I like fatbobs. But, small tiny tanks are at the moment back in style
i'm sorry if I got this wrong but did you say that bike can't run at 60 65 mph?

one way to keep fit. great bike too
I've watched a few of your videos now and all that kicking must keep you fit!
Starts on the 37th kick every time!!!!!! damn dude
You gotta love a nice looking knuckle.
I'm 72. Had a couple of 66 Sporters back in the day.My leg still hurts when I see a mag.
My new "most beautiful bike ever"!
it turned out to not be flooded. this one started with choke nearly closed after the prime, basically starved for gas
Ah yes , she’s playing hard to get ... my kinda woman ... awesome thanks Hunting Harleys !
Great comment
used to call it the Harley blues...great looking bike

Carb needs to be re=jetted I love the cackle that knucks have.
the concept of buying and selling is to make a profit, not to make it run perfect prior to sale. THAT is the way to loose money on every sale
Understood. I was just sayin.
I love this bike. I really want one
such a clean old bike
Any advice on aftemarket knuckle frames ? which are the best ? Thanks !!
the ones made in Germany seem to be nice, but I have never bought one. Personally, I would not buy an aftermarket
Nice little chopper!
...the rigids are just too short a frame for me!
Look nice, though.
Juice frame much more comfortable to ride.
beautiful ! but thats par for your vids, Todd !
Fuckin absolutely love 40's knuckles
what bikes were being produced in 1967
big twins, Sportster's and Generator Shovels both electric and/ or kick
Oh, of course not. But at least can you tell if its a wla frame ? Doesnt look like one, right ?
WLA frames are for 45 cubic flatheads. Knuckles and other big twins dont fit in WLA frames. This is a chopped knuckle frame
HuntingHarleys Now I get it. Sorry for my ignorance and thanks for teaching me, Great video btw.
What type of frames do you use for these bobbers?
whatever frame we get the bike with. If I had to buy all the parts and sell like that, the cost would be over 50K because parts are so expensive. So far, bobber's are not worth that much for which I am greatful
I bet
Thanks for letting me know!
HuntingHarleys can you ship a bike like this to australia?
true_alien_link not a problem
Hi Todd,I enjoy you videos,I have 3 Harleys,and looking for a 1964 pan head.
Making my leg tired watching this
Beautiful bike, man; I'm just getting started on trying to build one, I'm not green to ridin' but I'm green on Harley's. Can I ask the details of the bike? Like rake, stretch, fork (4, 6, over, etc.)
Been too many years now, don't recall
Amazing bike 👍
my 61 pan was always a bitch to start until i pulled the mag out and put in a nice electronic upgrade.
Is that the original frame ?
that is an original HD frame, there is no way to know if it is THE frame that came new with this machine or not.
I love this guy.
What kind if rims and tires are those
just what I got with the bike. Been way to long since I owned it to know.
Write start directions on a small rolled up paper and hide in bike somehow like the Dead Sea scrolls.
Crank, damnit.......CRANK!
Great looking bike.
Love the videos. Where you guys located again?
Los Angeles
HuntingHarleys Gotcha. I saw some seagulls then I saw one of the plates and put two into together. You guys doing outstanding job. Just need you on the East Coast ha ha
Hmm mustve been a cast iron kind of thing. My Shovelhead never had that problem lol
It's called being familiar with the machine..each bike starts differently. If you know the machine from personal experience, then you know exactly what it wants to start up
Well brother that's a beauty but I noticed one thing you didn't have a beard before that thing finally kicked over 🇺🇲 👀🎸
Beard comes n goes
why did u flood it before?
HD shoud start a continuation model!!jus like RE c350
do you know how to operate and drive a panhead Sportster
The fact someone put a Panhead top end onto a sportster lower end does not make the driving of one much different from any other. Either you have foot shifter or hand shift, with either a foot clutch or hand clutch. If you know how to ride, it is not a big deal either way
What does something like that cost? Cool bike
there is no set value anymore, whatever two people agree on. might be 5k, might be 75k
Has that bike been sold man?
years ago
I can certainly build you a bike like this if you have the money. send me an e-mail, huntingharleys@gmail.com
Is this knuckle for sale?
Sold around 10 years ago. I can get you a knuckle, expensive. Huntingharleys@gmail.com 661 904 8512
Very classical look but at my age, it would have to start at least on the 2nd kick.
I'd run right a showroom floor of 14's to get to this !!
What could be wrong? Finally Sporty! Give this baby some choke!
HuntingHarleys, nice video... You dont have any motor Knucklehead for sell it or Panhead? Thank you!

HuntingHarleys, and you have any Shovel? Im more interested in a Shovel Head. How much? Thanks.
no shovel motor's. I have not had any of those for a few decade's now.
So you sell only knuckes? You have Panhead Motor for sell?
I only have two motor's for sale, both Knucklehead's. Motor's of any type are very hard to come by. I've not had any Panhead motor's for sale for over 20 years now.
Amazing ride. Love it.
Hey..... WHAT A SOUND!!!!!
I’m in the same w my 39 knuckle
Gorgeous!!!
