    Been there before the pandemic. And it truly is majestic. I’ve never seen such beauty. However, we didn’t get to visit every place as we lack time to do so. But I surely want to go back and see more of the beauty of the place.

    The original Palace was much bigger and more magnificent, unfortunately everything were destroyed by eight western countries. If you visit there today, it’s only few stones left......

    It seems that every monarch had a summer palace, but I find those of both Chinese and Indian royalty to be particularly opulent and this one's no exception. It rivals the splendor of the Forbidden City and is just as impressive. What an incredible place.

      Too bad Shaolin is a Buddhist temple now. The monks don't train Kung Fu anymore... I was there 7 years ago and the only Kung Fu you can see there is in the schools outside the temple. But still, it was amazing to walk in that magical place myself.

    • @emapema6345

      Feike van Det Oh, it's sad to know that monks don't teach kung fu anymore! I was there in '99 and I had great experience with monks training. I miss that place....Yes, you are right that place it's really magic.

    • @winphet
      @winphet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Feike van Det Shaolinh temple has alway been a buddhist temple. The practice of Kung Fu is differents not like the movies you can see. Monks still prectice Kung Fu but you cannot see because there are places for tourist like you and place for secular monks.

    This palace was built solely for the pleasure of one power-hungrey woman. Because of her extravagant spending, China was not able to strengthen its army & navy to defend against the Europeans (mainly Britain & France) invasion.

    • @winphet
      @winphet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Catnip2011 Not exactly. It was build by emperor Qianlong for her mother. Later used by following emperors and Cixi who ordred the construction of the boat which you talk about.

    • @zeiitgeist
      @zeiitgeist 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Catnip2011 In addition, the sacking by Britain and France was before Cixi reign and her expansion on Yiheyuan Summer Palace, not only that, the looting and burning was done to Siheyuan "Old Summer Palace" around the Second Opium War.

      To be fair China didn't know much of the technological advancements of the West... to them Westerners were just pirates or barbarians, the Chinese underestimated the enemy... I would also want to add that since China was a power for most of history and that kingdoms around Asia were vasal states *(it caused them to think that nothing should change)...* thus why not only China but the rest of Asia stagnated *(China was happy with its vasals and China's vasals were happy as well)...* in Europe on the other hand competition between different kingdoms have lead to technological advancements.
