  • Rear hatch will occasionally not open on my 1996 Toyota 4Runner. The handle will have a lot of play with no tension as if the door were locked. This should apply to all 3rd gen 4Runners (1996-2002).
You'll need a pry tool (flat head screwdriver will work), a 10mm socket, and some sort of spray lubricant.

Good video. Thanks. One note: In my case the bracket that you mentioned (what the exterior handle is mounted to) is essential in the operation. Mine was so loose that the rod had no solid point to do it’s work.

What if the door won’t open which is the whole reason I need to take everything apart, how do I get the locking mechanism to unlock and open?

Try to use your key and then open it. Lmk

Hi, I have a 1998 4Runner and have had the problem the back lack won't open the liftgate when I pull on the hand latch it moves easily but not catching to open the latch. I have replaced the Genuine Toyota 69350-35020 Door Lock Assembly and seemed like it worked for a minute and now the same problem. If I use my key in the lock and turn it to the left as the window starts to come down the latch will engage and I can open the liftgate. Soon as I close it right back to where I started. Also, note the driver's lock and unlock button works fine for all doors but doesn't do anything for the liftgate latch. I am frustrated on what other parts could be causing this.
I have even disconnected the battery as some people suggest and still nothing. I would like to mention that everything is inspected on the arm that works the hatch lever and everything is connected and lubricated and working smooth when I move the arm myself and see both ends working properly yet when I shut the tailgate and pull on the latch it moves easily but failing to grab. Could the blue plastic control unit that the wire harness connects to be bad?

how do you get the hactch open if it wont open??? I went inside and the actual latch mechanism seems to be stuck and pulling the wire doesnt open the hatch.

For me it's not locking. Any pointers on this?

Would this be a similar fix if the cable is releasing the latch but not resecuring it when closing the rear hatch? I can open mine but if I don't manually reset the latch after opening it won't secure close
