Vandana Shiva and Ilse Köhler-Rollefson in conversation
Agro-ecology promises to deliver the social benefits associated with poverty reduction and community empowerment. While on the one hand it reduces the possibility of environmental degradation, on the other, it is capable of delivering environmental benefits through efficient resource use and reduced environmental impacts, both on-farm and off-farm. Gandhian eco-activist Vandana Shiva is the author of Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture and founder of Navdanya. The documentary film, The Seeds of Vandana Shiva, focuses on the people, circumstances and seminal events in her life. Ilse Köhler-Rollefson is a German scientist, pastoralist and author of Hoofprints. In a pertinent conversation, they discuss how ecological agriculture based on working with nature can regenerate the planet, rural economy and our health.
Vandana Shiva did her PhD on the ‘Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory’ from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, later shifting to interdisciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy. She founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology in Dehra Dun, dedicated to addressing pressing ecological and social issues of our times, and Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources. Time Magazine recognised Shiva as an environmental “hero” in 2003 and Forbes magazine in November 2010 named her as one of the 'Top Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe'. Shiva has received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Paris, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Oslo and Connecticut College and the University of Guelph. She is the recipient of the Alternative Nobel Prize, Order of the Golden Ark, Global 500 Award of the UN and Earth Day International Award.
Ilse Köhler-Rollefson, a German veterinarian, has spent the last thirty years among pastoralist cultures, especially the Raika camel nomads of Rajasthan, and believes their hereditary practices show us the way towards livestock keeping in the future. She is the author of Camel Karma and Hoofprints on the Land, among several other technical books.
