  • A very short tip here to get fuller, richer sound on the lower saxophones: simply put more mouthpiece in your mouth. Don’t default to alto sax or even clarinet position, you need to swallow a little bit more mouthpiece to get the optimum sound.
I play baritone on a number of recordings, see here for details:

Hey Neal, I have been playing proffesionally on the baritone sax for about a year, and I did subconsiously defaulted to the alto position. The real danger of this mouth position is that it doesn't actively sound bad, it just sounds a little worse than it could be. This small tip has def improved my sound a tad and has vastly improved the volume I can produce out of my sax. This is one of those rare "One weird tricks" that actually really works! Thanks

@@theodenise2133hey im a bari, I haven’t been playing for very long but I’ve found that to get to the lower notes it’s a lot easier to get there if you loosen your mouth and get a more relaxed.

Fantastic vid! Q: When practicing your lower notes (e.g. low b flat) do you practice these notes legato e.g. without your tongue? Thanks for reading my q!
