I always appreciate the links, Adam. I'm a professional metrologist and I use calipers daily among other measuring tools.
I had to return my "Cheap good digital calipers," the Neiko because it was 100% useless. It would not stay zero'd after only a tiny bit of movement. This happened with two that I tried. Tried to clean them up and it was no help. I started to wonder if I was crazy and just didn't get how they were supposed to work like I was doing something wrong. I say spend $10 more on the iGaging 6" calipers (not the "absolute origin" unless you need that).

Are you sure you have a real Digi Mito and not a Chinese clone? Because a real Mito shuts off automatically after a couple of minutes when not in use, while the knockoffs usually do too, but they keep constantly drain de batterie even if they are off. sometimes it is hard to see fake vs real.
I have three Mito's 2like the one you show and a grey colored one who can function accurately even soaked in oil, and the batt last more than 3 years now, while 1 of the two black ones is death within a couple months. The dead batterie is mostly a giveaway it is a copy, there are very good copies of the real ones and sometimes hard the get them apart from the real ones besides they eat batteries and sometimes you can see it on the back label or on the little screw on top and on the grinding pattern on the yaws.
Guess where got my fake one? starts with an E and ends with a Y.
And no it was not a $35 one but $95 one from what looked a reputable seller in the US, not china which hurts even a bit more, could have the same for 35 bucks.

1:35 There are 4 ways to measure with calipers.
1: outside jaws, big ones
2: inside jaws, small ones
3: depth rod (right of screen/bottom of caliper)
4: step gauge, on the back between the inside jaws, the flat edges that slide over each other (left of screen/top of caliper)

I’ve been measuring things with Vernier callipers for 25 years and I just learned a new way to use them.
It is always an amazing thing when as a maker you have those breakthrough moments of what tools become go to’s. Thank you for sharing your passion for growing as a maker.

I'm having trouble picturing this. Let's call the parts "outside jaws" (the long ones) and "inside jaws" (the short). Can you explain with those terms?
ender4555 I had to google “4 ways to measure with dial calipers” which answered it instantly. I was also quite confused with the explanations here.
@@ender4555 =====#[] if you hold the caliper in this orientation....the far right side, on the very top of the caliper, there are two planes that when the caliper is opened, will provide the same measurement as the other three methods between those two planes. Its not that easy to describe, but if the caliper is a birds head, the very top of the head is where you'll find both planes at zero.

I am very happy with my Mitutoyo mechanical caliper. One of my best purchases ever. I find myself using it every week during all kinds of projects. I love how you read it. I love what you can do with it. And its so beautifully made!
Adam, I get your enthusiasm for tools and using the "right" tool; there is a feel in your hand that the right tool has that no other has. I grew up with a father who was a tool and die maker; I grew up with a lathe, mill, and drill press in our workshop. When we needed a lawnmower part, we made it from a piece of steel. I get it, and it is great to see your enthusiasm.
I put myself through college working in machining, including the manufacturing of aerospace avionics; gears with tolerances in the 0.000005 inch range. The machcines you have in your shop are capable of pretty good work and I encourage you to pursue your drive for finer and finer precision. Look for ways to assure precision, accuracy, and repeatability. Tips like always move your table beyond the dimension you want and "bring it back" to your desired dimension so that you are always accounting for any backlash in the screw, no matter what machine you are using.
I would like to suggest a measuring tool that, for me, is the "right" tool when measuring up to 1inch; the 0-1 Outside Micrometer. My father gave me my first Starrett which is now over 100 years old (oh, god I just realized how old I have become) and I use it all the time in the shop. It fits in the hand perfectly, it is like fitting a violin to your chin. The 0-1 Mike measures to 0.0001" with an accuracy of plus/minus 0.00005 accuracy. It fits in my apron and I don't have any worry of bending the middle bar of a caliper. See if you need more than 0-1 inch measuring device in your apron and of you don't, give a micrometer a try.

I just got a new thimble that's really reignited my love for handsewing and embroidery and it's wild how much of a difference something that small can make in your work.
1:32 Depending on the calipers there's actually a fourth way, from top edge of jaw (opposite side of the plunger) to top edge of the other jaw, to measure step sizes (arguably redundant with the plunger but it's there none the less)
Id say the plunger is more redundant, this method is more accurate when possible.
I prefer it, the depth measuring blase one can cause cosine error much easier
It's not redundant, its good for measuring parallel flat surfaces like the edge of something to a wall.
By redundant I don't mean "without use", I mean that I don't think there any measurements you can only do with this 4th method that you can't with the plunger, but the reverse is absolutely true, as in there are measurements you definitely can't do with it that the plunger can such as measuring depth of holes.
Most calipers have the step measurement feature, less of them have the depth rod. When I teach basic metrology, when I get to calipers, I ask if anyone in the class can demonstrate all 4 measurement techniques, if so I'll buy them lunch. In 5 years of teaching the class, I've only had to buy the class lunch twice. Often overlooked, really useful feature.

I got mine shortly after getting my 3d printer when I wanted to start making replacement parts for things. I realized that a ruler just isn't good enough for what I needed. Ended up getting a hand-me-down mitutoyo 6 inch dial caliper and it's been great, except that I work almost entirely in metric and it's in inches. Kind of annoying.
Just got one for a cnc router since it came with several bits all unmarked and for using salvaged lumber but if you aren't familiar with wood, when they tell you a board is 1 inch thick it typically is 3/4" instead

I love my 4" Mitutoyo Calipers! Been using them at work for 37 years. I calibrate tools here in the shop too. The 4" always are a little more accurate. Nice video!
I find I have 3 essential digital tools: Digital calipers, cube angle finder and protractor.
I prefer a dial caliper for the same reasons as Adam, the battery is always dead when I need it but if they starting making them with AAA batteries I might consider them again lol and yes the digital angle finders and digital protractors are a God send...I also really like laser distance measure tools...way more convenient then a tape when measuring anything longer than an arm's length 👍
Could you explain what is a cube angle finder? I haven’t heard that term before, thanks
@@TheMasheenist it's a little magnetic box with a screen and you place it on objects to find what angle they are tilted to or they can also be used as a level. Google it or search on Amazon and you'll see what we mean.

@@TheMasheenist yeah they are great you can stick them right to the blade in some cases and adjust accordingly. Personally I like to use a sliding t-bevel for that job most often because I'm usually fixing things instead of building them so scribing just makes the most sense. Good luck in your adventures 👍

I know what you mean, I have a small hobby machine shop, so I need small measuring tools, around my mill spindle, 6" calipers way to big to take measurements without raising my spindle, I used to have a cheaply manufactured 4" dial caliper, but it eventually broke, I used it more than the 6" and 12" pairs.
However just recently I needed to get an accurate measurement on my mill machine without raising the z axis, I just bought a set from harbor freight of the measurement tools, so I could have a inside transfer caliper, but it came with the depth guage and steel rule, as other things as well, since I already have enough steel 6" rules, and I have another depth guage, I decided to dedicate the depth guage and steel rule for small measuring work.
So I stuck the steel rule in the vice and at around 4" I bent it until it broke, took some sandpaper to the edge and behold a very convenioent small size steel rule, for those small measurements. I broke the depth guage rule in the vice also, for a miniature guage to reach down a few inches to measure to a 1/64th of an inch with the mill head in lowered position.
All in all reforming these 6" measuring tools to around half there size, makes for a handy set of miniature measuring tools.
This “which side of the line I measure to” concept is a game changer!! Thanks for that bit of awareness

Omg you wanna talk about being analog? As a 5 year old child I preferred an analog physical clock because I could “see” the time, most kids my age had no idea how to read the hands on the clock but I’ve always preferred it digital numbers. As an automotive tech I prefer physical dial measurements than digital numbers
Doing instrument repair unused a set of crap digital calipers for about 5 years and just replaced them with a set I’d decent/moderate digital. Your statement on measuring to the line makes perfect sense, and just got me to order a set dial calipers. Thanks for inspiring us all to get better at our craft!

I believe AvE did a video on calipers, specifically about battery usage. The Mitutoyo uses a proper switch that actually stops the slow drain that kills batteries in cheaper calipers.

Mitus must use electricity when they're off because they remember their position. The electronics are just that good in mitus that you get practically shelf life out of a battery.

I simply take out the battery when my digital calliper is not in use for more than a few minutes
@@microbuilder beats me. There's no way a caliper can remember its position if it turns completely off though. Unless they're making them with some kind of persistent memory today? If I pull the battery out of my calipers I have to reset it. But I have an old pair of Mitus. The battery lasts so long I forget in between how to reset them. I have to hold one button down for a while. Which I never remember. Might be the REL button? I don't know.

I love working with analog tools. I had a digital caliper and found myself always going back to my analog ones. In a hurry it might be more error-prone, but for me it is a nice reminder to calm down when I am in my shop, slow down a bit and do the work I am doing a little bit better and with more attention. That's not saying I am not using any digital tools - I do! But I like the way analog tools work and feel and how they force you to be more careful in everything you do, even when it is a simple measurement. I remember my grandfather working in his tiny, tiny shop in the basement for hours over hours on his small projects and always carefully measuring things, writing numbers down on paper and do the math there. I am not a professional, I work in my shop for my private entertainment and with that I often think back to my grandpa and I like the idea that I am doing things as close to what he did back in the days - it connects me to him again :-) Long comment to say: I like analog better than digital, especially when measuring things and yes - dead batteries suck ;-)
I bought my first Mitutoyo 6” dial calipers in 1994 and I still have them in the original plastic case. I agree that they are in essential tool. I actually used mine the other day comparing an original car part with a replacement car part and measure the wall thickness of the plastic molding. As I recall the calipers do you need calibrating from time to time. Keep bringing great content.
As a European living in the US, digital calipers give me the easy switch and conversion between unit systems.
Somewhere along the video I thought he cut his 6" calipers
I chopped a 6" digital caliper down to 2" long to make a depth indicator for a small drill press. I have read that digital calipers have a pcb running the length of the calipers, underneath the sticker. Somehow the caliper measures capacitance of the pcb?
Anyhow, I figured I would try and see what happens. Yes, there is a pcb under the sticker. I chopped right through with a cutoff disc and sanded it to length. Works fine.
@@mildyproductive9726 It should work fine even after being cut, there's no current going through the PCB part, and no traces running longitudinally. The copper on the PCB is a high-resolution, complicated multi-row barcode that is read with the capacitive sensing system on the moving head. Think of an optical encoder, but unrolled and measuring capacitively rather than optically.

Yes I totally understand and I have versions of both dial, and digital calipers. My favorite pair is Brown and Sharp with the black dial face.

I like this video. I feel the same way about the evolution of how tools are viewed. I have gone from using lineman's and needle nose pliers exclusively to using slip lock pliers and now to adjustable knipex style pliers. All the while being sure that what I was using was the best. Keeping an open mind and always having the mindset to improve is a critical life skill that will serve indefinitely.
Hand tool woodworker here. Completely understand the relationship with a measuring tool. I have a strong fondness for my 6" and 12" engineering squares. Got onto this video as I am looking to go from a digital to dial caliper; thank you for pointing out the 4" size. I also have extreme preference and fondness for my marking knife. I've used many but have an irrational love for one.

I agree, having that flexibility can make a job so much easier. Especially if someone gives you a job with measurements that only a digital caliper can measure. Mine does fractions, millimeters and inches like the other person that replied here. You can't beat the convenience.
Totally. BUT they do make inch/metric dial calipers with two independently sweeping hands. That being said, I use digital ones.
And then you have the old timers that just have the math memorized from decades of conversations
.03937 and 25.4 is what I use to convert if it’s in mm (almost always is). The metric feature is handy in some cases but when I’m making a part with machines and dial indicators that read in inches converting is the way to go.

I fully understand and have had the exact same experience. For a long time I was doing a lot of parts that were 6~7" long. So I was having to use a 12" caliper day in and day out. And then I found that 8" calipers exist. They've been my go to calipers since. :) (Still hunting for a good set of 4in for stuff around the house) Changing topics a little, I have gotten so used to calipers for measuring things that I have 2 or 3 inexpensive sets around my home for doing quick "hey what size is bla widget before I go to the store to get another one".
Hey I remember those. Used them in machine shop in high school. I also used them at one of my first jobs. I worked at a machine shop and one of the things we made were punches for soda cans back in the late '70s.

it's a sad day when a man's reputation gets dragged thru the mud by an accuser, when the accuser is found to be lying they should go to jail for 20 years because lies like this can ruin a person's life.
Shane Forsythe Allegations should always be investigated to the fullest extent possible. The accuser, however, should indeed face the same sentence range if they are found to be lying. (Or receive psychological help depending on the situation).
@@ddupree79 of course all allegations need to be investigated, but nobody's name should be named and made public, or put in the news until AFTER he/she is found guilty, in fact it should be a jail sentence for dragging a person's name thru the mud. I relate to this "Ah ha!" moment at a deeper level: I've heard "recognition is liberation," that is to say, when you actually "see" what it is... for what it is... you're already 90% on the way to the solution. in your case it was the 4" Calipers and it's happened to me as well about tools, or workflow, or life in general... it makes a profound shift in what you do and how you interact... yeah... It's pretty COOL when it happens 😎 We change and evolve, it's part of our process.

@@Sheridantank union people tend to work differently... I once was tasked to sort through boxes of archives with a guy in a union, in a storage room. Just walking there ( it was in the back of the supermarkt) took 5 times the normal time. He has some kind of gift of making it look as he was working while doing something else ( mainly talking with other union people...)

100% can agree. Unions are trash. I was harassed and insulted by someone when new as a temp at a factory by a union worker. I flipped shit on them and they were like “well I’m in a union so good luck getting me in trouble”.
I love my calipers, I only have the digital calipers but this is food for thought about battery operated devices, during the lockdown, it has been more difficult to get out and get more batteries for our electronic devices and there are analog devices like these calipers that don't require batteries, hhmmmmmm, makes one think.
@@ParabolicLabs I actually modded my cheapo digital calipers to have a AAA on top of it. I think I've changed that battery once in the past 5-6 years or so. Now I have a proper Mitutoyo instead and I'll happily replace that battery every couple of years or however long it lasts.
I hear ya there adam. As an industrial machinery mechanic, my tool collection keeps growing over time but i find myself going back to my old trusty tools that were there for me in the beginning. I feel the same way you do about calipers. I love my digital caliper but my dial caliper will always be my go to because of the battery issue. I havent looked to see if there are solar/ light powered ones yet to see how reliable they are. Maybe we should look in to that!
I did quite a lot of metrology and calibration when I was an apprentice toolmaker. one of the projects was to make a sine bar, and the rollers for it, then check it with slip guages.
I also prefer manual calipers over digital, but I go a step further and use a plain old Vernier caliper. I feel like I'm doing something then. And they are durable. Displays and dials can and often do get damaged in a busy machine shop or toolroom environment.
If you can find the time, and a trade college that will have you, I strongly urge you to look into toolmaking and get certified. You will check off a lot with your current qualifications acting as prerequisites for a lot of the toolmaking modules. If your eyes are open now, I truly believe you'll be blown away by toolmaking. It opened up the world for me and taught me how to design and make and fix anything. I mean that literally. You will never see the world the same again when you look at any product and can be fairly certain you know how it was made, or how to improve it or how to fix it.

Yea, imperial fractions are easier, 12 just chops up more neatly in more ways than 10 does and makes more sense on a dial. It's probably why we don't use metric time. Whereas obviously our base ten numbering system looks simpler in a digital decimal form.

Imperial is not easy to learn in comparison to metric, and that's what matters. Imperial is complicated when you have to switch through the units. Or when you are forced to use fractions.
Adam, After watching this video I went looking for a new more accurate caliper vs the plastic one I have been using. I went to a Pawn Shop and found a Central Tool 6" dial caliper for 15 bucks. It cma with a .01 check piece. I took it home and measure some things and it is Awesome. Thanks for the tool tip. Be safe.
I enjoyed your presentation. I only have a digital caliper and what I really like about it is the ability to measure in not only thousandths of an inch, but with the press of a button I can see what the fractional or metric equivalent is.

This is one big benefit of digital calipers, it'll convert for you...I switch between both all the time depending on what I'm doing, its really helpful.

On the court thing; Why do people feel they are in a position to judge on this? How do they feel they have enough information even to make that judgement? I think people just want to know if they should feel guilty or not about watching Adam from now forward. I'm trying to tell myself these two are separate, but here I am. Whether the allegations are true or not, for me it's more telling how he responds to his sibling now than what happened 50 years ago. If he treats her like shit for instance
On one hand you will have people who have been through this and didn't have their own family believe them.
On the other you will have people who have had family with substance abuse problems that have sunk about as low.
Either way it'll tug at those people. Just a shame how fast people rush to judgement these days.

I love my 4" calipers. I build big stuff at work, so there my standard go-to is 12", but at home on smaller parts, the 4" set is agile and frankly indispensable.

NIce to know this, I have a bunch of normal calipers from my grandad's workshop but they are a little bit rusted. Always dreamt about buying a digital caliper, now I know better and dream about 4" dial calipers.

Honestly though, how would you feel it it was true? I believe the allegation states that at the time of his abusing he was 9 to 12 years old, now none of us know the full extent of the allegations, but do you think we should hold him responsible for the actions of his childhood (when his parents were the responsible parties and he knew nothing, if it's true it indicates he was probably abused himself) and if so, to what degree?
Seriously though, how do we handle punishing a child for a heinous crime some 40 years later?
To me the crime committed when he was a child is essentially irrelevant, the more egregious crime would be denying it if it's true, but then there are certain considerations to be made like what damage to the family overall would be done if he admitted to it in today's world of cancel culture where you're condemned for eternity for something you did in the past, whether you learned from it or not doesn't matter.
Personally I think that if it's true then the right thing for him to do would be to publicly address it and for him to explain why it was awful and what enabled him to do such a thing so that everyone else can get a little more insight on how to avoid doing the same things. That would be the only silver lining to be had, for us to examine how this scenario was even possible, the mistakes he made and the mistakes his parents made that allowed this to happen in the first place.
But we don't live in a forgiving era, and the public would absolutely destroy him for doing so, because instead of us viewing him as a person who had an incredibly troubling past (due to what ever horrible conditions that existed or existed in his mind at the time of his offense) who was able to recognize his actions and now understands them to be wrong, we view him as this entity that should be forever punished for the horrible thing he did - When he was between the ages of 9 and 12....

I got my first set of calipers at PGS Gunsmithing School. It was a 6” Mitutoyo dial caliper. Then an old freind retired machinist gave me his 6” Starret and 0”-1” Brown & Sharp micrometer. Both great Companies, great products.
I feel the same about my 4" (100mm) Empire Brass Vernier cal. Tiny and sturdy for any pocket, and as accurate as I need without a fragile dial that can get broken off in some cases.
Hoping Adam sorts the issues out with his nutcase of a sister. Sick and tired of people coming out of the wood work to try and cash in and ruin peoples lives.

I have a very cheap pair of plastic student's vernier calipers that I use around the house, and even that, which isn't terribly precise, and that I have to re-remember how to read the vernier chart every time I use them, is just an incredible upgrade over measuring tape. Those dial calipers look fabulous.
I have always gravitated to dial verniers as I hate batteries running out, it's great to know I'm not alone in this.
So many sheep are quick to attack Adam due to accusations towards him. Think before you attack, I would hope you guys are better than that

I have to say my usage of analog vs. digital varies by task. When I am building things I almost always use dial calipers. That's how I learned, it's what I am comfortable with, and as you said you can infer fractional thousands by where the needle is within a mark on the dial. But interestingly when I am reloading ammunition I always use digital calipers; I think because the target numbers in the manual are always written similar to "3.145 - 3.149" and it is simpler for my brain to understand the relationship by looking at a decimal number on the calipers rather than doing the conversion in my head.
I have a pair of Mitutoyo Digital Calipers, and i enjoy them. Granted, i am not working on machinery, but it comes in great handy when doing models.

I recently got a husky digital caliper. It comes with a battery and a replacement battery, so thats nice. But my favorite feature is that it can estimate imperial fractions (1/8", 1/16", etc), which is so useful sometimes.
What I love about my current digital calipers is that they easily change between fractions of an inch, thousandths and metric with a simple click of a button... makes it really easy to figure out if some part is metric or standard...
