- Twisted Metal is Sony’s longest-running PlayStation video game franchise and has spanned over 8 games and 4 PlayStation consoles (PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3). 5 if you count the PlayStation 4 and 5 versions of Twisted Metal: Black and the recently released PS Plus versions of Twisted Metal 1 and 2! Each and every step of the way Twisted Metal was joined by the iconic killer clown, Needles Kane. AKA Sweet Tooth.
Twisted Metal has evolved, changed, and taken on many different forms, from being a semi-grounded car combat title in Twisted Metal 1 to becoming a silly caricature of itself in Twisted Metal 3 and 4 before moving into darker waters with the brooding horror fest of Twisted Metal: Black then followed by the playful and charming Small Brawl until finally settled on a combination of everything with Twisted Metal: Head On and the 2012 reboot, but through every iteration of this weird and wacky series, Sweet Tooth was evolving and changing right along with it.
Sweet Tooth is one of three characters that has appeared in every release of Twisted Metal alongside Warthog and Grimm. Unlike those two, however, Mr. Tooth is the only one to be featured on the cover of every game. Without a doubt, he’s the face of the franchise and remains the most significant contribution to gaming and pop culture that Twisted Metal has ever spawned.
To this day, if you bring up Twisted Metal to someone who is only vaguely aware of what it is, more often than not they’ll ask “is that the game with the ice cream truck clown?” They may not have any concept of any other aspect of Twisted Metal, but good golly do they have this weirdo etched into their brain.
So what I want to do today is take a look at Sweet Tooth and how he and his ice cream truck have adapted over the course of every Twisted Metal game.
Starting with Twisted Metal 1 all the way through to the 2012 reboot, I’ll play each version of Sweet Tooth and see how far I can get before I game over, all the while doing my best to break down his place in this franchise and how he has evolved through each game. It’ll be exciting to see how the concept of Sweet Tooth expresses itself across all the games, because I think his character and vehicle represents each game it appears in perfectly. As goes Sweet Tooth, so goes the rest of Twisted Metal. And vice verse or whatever.

Fun fact the actor for sweet tooth in the first game is the same guy who portrayed charlie kane the driver of yellow jacket and most importantly... sweet tooths dad

Pleasantly surprised by how good the TV show was. I love that Sweet Tooth is voiced by Will Arnett and his backstory is basically Bojack Horseman if he lost his mind and killed Mr. Peanutbutter. That was a nice touch.
Will Arnett's characters and writing in BH and Flaked made me want to call him up and ask if he's okay. From your take I'm guessing Twisted Metal might be another cry for help lol
Yeah this show looked straight cheeks with the trailers they released but I was pleasantly surprised once I actually watched it, I hope they get to make season 2
IDK how anyone can be happy with that shit show. It barely even has any actual car combat and on top of that, Sweet Tooth is absolute shit in it.

The irony about Sweet Tooth being the face of Twisted Metal is the fact he had to be unlocked in TM2, 3 and 4. That would be like having to unlock Scorpion or Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat games.
Feels like Twisted Metal Head On is Twisted Metal Black but it's outside Sweet Tooth's head, AKA the real world. Even in Roadkill's ending, Sweet Tooth mentioned that "I never did liked this place", meaning that he's now out in his imaginary world.
Head On is a direct sequel to 2
It takes place like 3 years after TM2 I think?
Now, to be fair to Twisted Metal 1, it was a PS1 launch title. Literally a game developed for a brand new console.
But also damn is TM2 an immediate upgrade.
I still don't get why they decided to cut out FMVs despite spending budget and leaving CD just empty instead... Or why there's no level select or freeplay. I get no multiplayer but it's baffling they didn't think of picking an unlocked level for replay. TM2 also got baffling decision to only have two players coop OR duel, when it was obvious that deathmatch free for all is where it's at.
It just sucks that games with best rosters don't have good modes, just story or versus.
You can NEVER have Twisted Metal without Needles Kane aka Sweet Tooth! His ice cream truck is always memorable to me, and Black did it best.
Honestly I hated its design in Black. I prefer the 2012 design and the second and third games
Fun fact: Sweet Tooth has a 6-2 record on Calypso
Has a win streak of 4 over Calypso (In 4, he took over the tournament. Black is his main domain, and also throat checked Calypso. Small Brawl, with him hijacking the Ice Cream Truck and Billy as a front bumper. And then at Head-on, where a body swap DOES kill Needles... with Calypso's soul in it.)
You could make a case that he doesn't really "lose" in TM2. He seems pretty happy killing all of the other bugs.

2012 he got buried in his daughter's grave but Calypso gave but somehow she gained needle's power. It was a real confusing end

@@societyisboring publishers, not devs. Those generally make what has a contract and finances. See Carmageddon, Wasteland, iunno, Baldur's Gate so many franchises back after crowdfunding and/or early access fan feedback campaigns. All it needs is the franchise holder putting in work.

Even now I'm a bit taken back by the fact people seem to treat the whole "Sweet Bot" thing in both Black and 2012 as if it's no big deal. It feels like it really should be.
Beating the story mode in tm2 with sweet tooth was a video game highlight in my childhood
SweetTooth in TM1 is the creepiest out of his other appearances throughout the franchise, imo. And I love it. I don’t have that clown phobia but he seems more grounded in the first game

And the stories are good for each character. But it all comes down to gameplay, graphics, control and BLACK has the best hands down. If you enjoyed 3 & 4 by 989 Studios then you are not a real fan. I was so happy David Jaffe and Incognito got back Twisted Metal with Black after the abysmal previous 2 games.

Anyway I disagree with black having the best controls. I think that honor goes to TM12. I would say gameplay too, but those damn racing sections especially the Diesel City Dollface race.

Im inclined to agree the live action end cutscene was pure fkking nightmare fuel. Like idk if it was the cheap makeup and costumes or if it was the public access channel A/V quality or both.
Smallbrawl Sweet Tooth is like having a little brother because when you see him before you'd think it's cute little child with a clown mask when in actuality he's a maniacal little bloodthirsty lawbreaker with no remorse for life, no concept of morals and somebody who will never regret their actions.
Smallbrawl Sweet Tooth is the type of kid to microwave his hamster, because he got curious. But instead of instant dread after finding out that he killed it, he'd find it hilarious, steal his neigbour's hamster and repeat the cycle.
People just doesn't get how sickly powerful Tooth was on 4: he had +55% avg of damage on ALL enemies with his special, and it was "ghost" homing -gets to you anywhere-
Black was demential AF and ironically, it grounds him.

I love the addition of the ice cream truck music in black,how garbled and rusty it sounds adds to the creep factor. I was never really that much of a Sweet Tooth player,especially in 2,rolled like a dice in handling, visually a very cool vehicle,gotta build a model of one of his incarnations someday.

I love TM Head On its one of my favorites but tbh it has the worst looking ice cream truck out of all the games, something looks off about it.

I feel 2 proves that Tone and Art Direction are what matter most to the average TM fan. And to be fair, 2 is the Ziggy Stardust of Twisted Metal, while Black is the Station to Station (an amazing album but really Dense and hard to approach on a mainstream level).
1 is Paranoid, 2 is Master of Reality then 3 is Never Say Die... 4 is some random Tony Martin album lol. Black & Head On are Dio era, Reboot is 13 that nobody asked for...

Sweet tooth was pretty neat back in tm1. Like the acting wasn't bad and dude just pulled a tec 9 from his pants and gunned down a bunch of guys.
21:38: Headcanon: secret characters endings are placeholders. My canonical version is that Sweet Tooth WON Twisted Metal 3 and wished to take place of Calypso, setting stage for TM4 competition. Which I assume Calypso won and put the guy into asylum. And I don't care what devs think since they have a reboot every single game. I have SOME continuity! They only thing they have is Outlaw endings connected but other cars seem to have won TM2 as well. BTW the Calypso shenanigans allow 3 & 4 exist in same continuity as Black or Head-On if it ends with a reset or time travel back to where TM3 began.
This was hella entertaining, sadly I couldn't watch the ending cause I'm doing my best to save myself for when I play TM2012 but that was really nice

An open world vehicular combat game where you actually have to travel to the next round’s location, stopping to complete random side objectives that allow you to unlock additional upgrades and weapons? Now THAT would be awesome!

I do like the more clownish interpretations of Sweet Tooth. TM1 is more like the modern day Joker and TM4 is like the terrifying It clown.
Sweet tooth was also an unlockable character in the Ps1 game Everybody's Hot shots, he was my favorite :')

My current headcanon after watching this is that sweet tooth has been himself until head on, where he kills calypso in his body, and into 2012 the sweet tooth we know is still calypso, and that's why he just burys him.... okay that's just for fun but it's still needles.

A Twisted Metal Kart Racer like a fun childish goofy Mario Kart style game with the cast being quirky and goofy could be a lot of fun and a nice change of pace.

About TM Black I've always wondered: is the ice cream truck turning into a mech one of Sweet Tooth's fantasies? Or is he also a technological genius and he actually built the damn thing?
I always assumed calypso tricked out the cars with some wacky magic hence why we have station wagons on tank treads homing missiles that go through walls and ice cream truck mechs
He's also the only one with the same driver and it's always the same vehicle.

I dunno why they scrapped the FMV endings, they're charming even now, and at the time, a PS1 game WITHOUT videos felt very outdated (ofc maybe because I didn't play it when it was new but I played it after all most others). I always felt ripped off if games didn't fill the whole CD lol. Then again, I only had it as part of collection.
Anyway, about gitting good... I see TH-cam retro gaming videos vindicating everyone who was bad at the "best" games, as things like Mortal Kombat 2, first Resident Evil or Twisted Metal 2 might have best characters and presentation overall but BOI were they borderline unplayable for a kid. Cheating AI and all...
TM1 is dated in a few other aspects like no free mode, I wish we got a remake or updated version because I like the atmosphere and city brawling. I still think the gameplay itself is solid, it's just has a string of strange design decisions as developers didn't really figure out proper gameplay modes until 3 (yes, 3, TM2 STILL doesn't have a deathmatch with 2 players AND AI, only coop or-1 on-1 versus).
The atory on the cut FMV videos is that the devs working to make the game or the publishers...one or the other (sorry, dont remember which off the top of my head) were religeous and of all things, were against the bikini girls. So it was either cut the FMVs or the game doesn't get finished. At all
Sweet Tooths portrayal in Black was absolutely perfect. it really seems to me that was the game where the character stories and endings made the most sense. Sweet Tooths wish in twisted metal 2 is just so stupid to me. I get that he's a crazy person but i feel like he would've wished for something else

That’s nonsense friend it’s TM1 TM Black(the second game dunno why there’s a game called 2 this is the sequel) then we have Head On,the third game, and 2012 the fourth game. Trust me this is the truth. There might’ve been a spin off with RC cars but some people don’t like fun. Amazing content as usual man, the editing quality and humor keeps going up keep up the good work!
