Explaining Every Character in Twisted Metal: Black for 50 minutes

- Twisted Metal: Black for the PlayStation 2 released in 2001 and is a game that, like onions and ogres, has layers.
On its surface, it’s a fast-paced, action-packed car combat arena fighting game.
Going a little deeper, it’s also a mysterious, brooding world that’s brilliant in its darkness and features a cast of characters whose stories I find to be endlessly fascinating. Those characters are what I would like to explore today. I’ll go through each one and break down what they’re all about, their place in the world of Twisted Metal: Black, and in addition to that, what they could represent in the larger meta narrative of the game.
This video is one that I hope can express how much this game accomplishes as a storytelling piece and also help you appreciate the game a little more for its world and narrative.

One detail that I always enjoyed was the fact that, given the context that Marcus Kane is hiding within Needles's mind as Minion, his usual car, Road Kill, is now being driven by a literal John Doe: a blind spot, possibly showing that Needles truly believes the Marcus personality to be gone from his mind, and thus the spot that he would normally take is a nobody. And just like what would likely happen to the Marcus persona if he tried to come forward again, John Doe is snuffed out immediately once he realizes who he is and what his place in the world really is.
I feel like for as diverse as the cast of twisted metal was, and how it showed people from any walk of life could do unthinkable things for their wish come true, Sweet Tooth just can't see that. He sees everyone coming from an asylum and incredibly broken like him. As crazy as he is maybe it's justifiable thinking you'd have to be crazy to enter Twisted Metal willingly.
About Agent Stone, it’s not that he couldn’t do it… it’s that when he tried, the gun ran out of ammo.
He didn’t seem to have any extra mags or other guns, so he was kinda forced to deal with what he had done.

I think agent stone represents needles regrets for murder. That in his mind marcus is still there represented as agent stone fighting to keep his humanity for killing and wanting to take it back. But when agent stone gets his wish he is killed. Which in turn means the last bit of humanity is now gone from needles, the regret and guilt for the bad things we do is now completely eradicated in needles.
You missed one character: Calypso himself.
Considering his designs is clearly that of a maskless Needles, i think analyzing him may even have cleared up a few things here and there.

I always like that certain vehicles have a large, series-wide theme to them. Shadow's drivers are of revenge for the fallen while Darkside's drivers are about taking back what they lost.

One thing everyone gets wrong about TM Black is the prizes. People in Black don't get to make wishes, I dont even think the word wish is in the entire game. Calypso comes to people with a prize they already want, and they compete for it.
You’re right! However, there are a few loading screen dialogues that suggest the contestants do get to ask for a prize.
No-Face for example says “If I win, I can ask for any prize? I’ll take revenge. Try having your face ripped apart, see what you ask for…”
So I’m honestly not sure.
@@dessadoo This is exactly what dissapointed me about Twisted Metal 2012. We didn't get to know the characters like we did in Black. I loved the dialouge in the loading screens.

What’s interesting to me about Mr. Grimm here is that his friend’s name is Benny. Ben Grimm is the real name of Marvel superhero the Thing, who was a veteran as well. No idea how this connects, though.

The 3 games that shocked me the most as a kid with it's subject matter and what they were allowed to get away with at the time. There's only one game since these that managed to "shock" me in my adult years and that's Kane & Lynch 2. With all of it's gameplay flaws, the world and subject matter of that game is so bleak and disturbing, it's fascinating. But Twisted Metal: Black always felt to me like the marriage of Manhunt's brutal, unapologetic violence and Silent Hill 2's deep nuance and character study of the human psyche

Out of all the gripes Id say Calypso's new identity is a letdown from the original cunning look with hair. He just looks like a mob henchman in Black.
I've thought of Bloody Mary's wish as accurately fulfilling the wish as stated by Calypso and re-stated by Mary during her intro cutscene.
"If I won his game I'd never have to be alone again."
Calypso follows through by giving Mary a modified human "robot" who will follows Mary's commands, but doesn't change how that man emotionally. She is given a physical companion who will see to her physical needs, but who will never willingly participate in the relationship. Being physically catered to and being actively avoided emotionally is pretty painful for the average person, imagine being Mary who is consistently hurt by being avoided emotionally. Her tailor-made groom is the closest thing to what she's wanted, but he's lacking the crucial thing she's really looking for. Ultimately I agree that she falls in love with serial murder, but disagree that her wish was poorly answered.

Damn this video is good, ive seen the TM Black stories a million times thru the game itself, and thru youtube videos similar to this breaking each one down deeper...but you made it so much more interesting. Telling each one as an actual story, adding in xtra details n such. Its almost like listening to a bunch of creepypastas. And even tho i already know all the stories, u still made them feel fresh. 10 out of 10 lol

I'm still watching now about at the end on the manslaughter part, been a TM fan since I was like 6, even love the 989 games, and have a tattoo of of Sweettooths mask, so naturally I've been watching alot of TM content since it became somewhat in pop culture again with the show being made n such, and you are a main person along with a couple other guys like tactical bacon. Keep it up!
what a beautiful video man, great work! i love to see this intro spective reviews and details on Twisted Metal Black as it has one of my FAVORITE type of dark, surreal, and openly ambiguous story lines n such in the series to DATE, i absolutely LOVE Twisted Metal Black's world AND it's characters SO much, so it's sucha treat to see people talk about it ;D and! favorite character from Twisted Metal Black is EASILY my girl Dollface, ughhh i love her so muchh, and technically she's actually the most innocent out of the whole cast, it's just her design, her story, her voice, her personality, everything about her is incredible, sweet tooth is a close second! his design is flawless, and his kinda crazy story is sometimes hysterical at certain points lmao, but my girl dollface, MMM... the absolute best~

As someone with psychotic bipolar I think it’s hilarious Dollface and Raven are diagnosed bipolar 1 when Preacher is exactly how Bipolar manifests differently than schizophrenia and epilepsy. Spiritual grandiosity/god complex is huge in hypomania and mania then you “fall” and come back to your senses in depression just like his story. Yes one tiny realization can send you into a months long depression and reality check. I almost became a cult leader on accident while manic because I’m so charismatic and charming even when I was sick. I convinced a whole group I was a vampire with angel powers and they all stupidly believed me only feeding my illness and delusions until the inevitable flip of bipolar. Preacher has psychotic bipolar not “delusional.” As someone with a mood, multiple personality, and a developmental disorder, Raven is more BPD or ASPD-sociopath than bipolar. Her obsession with Kelly is more likely an attachment issue if BPD or an unending infatuation if ASPD. Especially as it’s stated her parents are abusive and not a safe that’s how personality disorders form. The implication of a FEMALE therapist suggests sexual misconduct from male authorities in her life which is often the kickstarter for BPD development in many young women. Dollface has severe CPTSD and possible autism with her kinder approach to the narrative, absurd obedience, and only seeing good in people from extreme empathy. Bipolar really doesn’t show itself at all except with low self image but that’s almost every mental condition. She and Axel seem unipolar if anything. I wish they did more research into actual mental illness when using solely mental patients. Sweet tooth is definitely a psychopath, I am too. You are born one and you have NPD + ASPD and usually Machiavellians. The stereotype is serial killer because of our lack of remorse and unending boredom, but a good chunk of us have self control and an understanding of an eye for an eye. I for example make a great therapist because of how I see the world so differently than the vast majority even amongst neurodivergent people. I can approach any situation unbiased since I lack true empathy and emotions and can see any side of a situation. I wish they went more into his “split personality.” The NPD part of psychopathy comes with no true sense of self, disassociation, and grandiose behaviors to separate yourself from your reality. For me personality I too have a “split personality” between two beings but it’s not DID level like Sweet Tooth. Bloody Mary is a good example of classic narcissism. She’s delusional and grandiose thinking she’s so beautiful it’s impossible that she could be alone not realizing she’s not fun to be around due to her creepy obsession of being desired from to lack of parental affection. They finally get the love and realize they hate it and want to be alone. Lots of narcissists I know in real life are like this. NPD is different with ASPD attached. Sociopaths and psychopaths are self-fulfilling in their narcissism is ways plain narcissists aren’t. That’s why Sweet tooth can bonk for fun and Bloody Mary seeks it as her sole mission. Some might say I’m over analyzing this, but I’m not. If they included such heavy topics as diagnosed mental health and spread weird misinformation then it has to be corrected or at least have someone like myself with actual related diagnoses weigh in on it. Just because they’re fictitious doesn’t mean they can’t have real world consequences from the people consuming said media. Drag queen is my #1 example. Everyone is too scared to talk about her in the same way people don’t wanna touch the mental health topic the game brings up. Also the developer who said he’s sweet tooth, that projection is definitely shown in Black with Cage or whoever. He wishes he could be a psycho like sweet tooth but has empathy and remorse which makes serial killing hard? Um lead developer guy? You good? Like dude just scream it from the roof top at that point. Your inner most projection manifested as sweet tooth then in your own game created a character who wishes to be like sweet tooth but can’t because of remorse… That sound like he needs therapy and to go to the gym.

Preacher is one big plot hole in his story hes not actually possessed by demons, but in sweet tooths story he curses him? How?
Perhaps two things are true at once? I've never thought about it myself but now that you've mentioned it I really don't have a definite explanation for that other than maybe Preacher isn't "possessed" but invoked their power when he curses Needles?
"Lost Souls" are aptly described the "contestants." Twisted Metal: Black is unapologetically dark but I wasn't aware of the changes and censorship outside the commercial, that was later changed. I haven't played it in years until I downloaded on PS4. Damn, I was desensitized from the dark stories as a teen but now; I mean holy 🤬 they're dark. Still, this is a great summary and recap of one of my PS2 favorite

Problem with your analysis is that agent stone had no ammunition and thought it was an act of god. Same thing happens the second time around. Except he cant defend himself because of the empty magazine. Also, wouldn't the barrel of the rifle be hot after so many shots? Mainly, he wasn't counting his ammunition.
I hope when Black 2 comes out every character will be a bald man, even women and cars
So, Black is interesting; TBP said Black could represented in Sweettooth's mind as cancer. But in Twisted Metal: Lost, it said he's from a parallel universe.

My favorite Characters are Darkside because I used to feel like her thinking I would screw up and it’s my fault till The other part of the non guilt side of the Brain 🧠 decides that it doesn’t matter leading to selfishness.and then Sweet Tooth I feel like he reminds me that he’s a good example of How mankind’s mind can snap.! and twist from The Evil of Satan and The Weakness of the Natural mankind’s mind and that Sweet Tooth also reminds me of real life serial killers like John Wayne Gacey and Jeffrey Daumer that come from bad upbringings from Bad parents like Charlie Kane SR. And that parents shouldn’t always favor their children too cause it relates to Bad results turning non favorite children like Marcus Kane ( Needles Kane) into Dark turmoil and mass Homicide killers! 🤡🔥
Sweettooth was wrong about Stone though because Stone died with a sense of peace and fulfillment, sure he died but his death wasn't futile he actually got a good ending.
I believe axels ending is actually about sweet tooth trying to commit suicide after killing his wife but failing.

Despite sweet tooth or Marcus Kane having a really dark story line and a fuck up character I see him as my favorite
20:14, something doesn't fit, according to the game, he was 51, in 1971 he should have been 21, not 18, unless the game wasn't set in 2001 (when the game came out), so, if he was 18 in 1971, then he was 48 in 2001, therefore 51 (the age in game) in 2004, the game is set in the near future (2004 to be specific)?
Another great video from you, Drew, ever well-spoken and in this case respectfully serious with the dark subject matter. The fact that such deep analysis as this can be made for the world of TM Black is exactly why it's my favorite of the series, and why it's so heavily influenced my taste in games/shows and to this day inspires my own storywriting I do as a hobby. Sure, I may be giving Black more credit than it probably deserves for what it is as just a car combat game, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t deeply fascinating and interesting to think about and analyze.

When you go even just a bit under the "car combat" surface of Black, you really do find a world full of psychology and dark fantasy - and I find psychological horror to be the most captivating form of the broader horror genre. This game is very special to JS Gilbert, the voice of Sweet Tooth (also No-Face and Agent Stone). I met him at a convention this weekend and he had quite a bit to say about the series and his character. Notably, he said that most of Sweet Tooth's lines in Black were improvised by him. He also said Black is the best of the series in terms of narrative and gameplay. He wasn't a fan of the new modes added in the 2012 game, but praised the live action cutscenes. Supposedly, Sony is planning to release a new bundle of TM2, Black, and Head-On onto PS5 (and likely PS4) partly because of the renewed interest in the series after the first season of the TV show.
On the subject of the show, he was bitter. Apparently he was originally slated to be involved with the show as the voice of Sweet Tooth, but was pushed out by Will Arnett who, as a producer for the show, cast himself as the voice and took the character in a different direction.
Seeing as David Jaffe is not in game development anymore and there are no plans to create a new Twisted Metal game at Sony, it seems unlikely that JS Gilbert will return to the character in an official capacity. At least, that's how he sees it. But he loves to talk with fans, and he's pretty blunt and honest. If you see that he's on the guest list to a con you're going to, absolutely stop by and talk to him. You'll learn something new.
Like that he was the voice of Mario in Mario's Time Machine.

I love twisted metal. I even like 3 and 4. Black, mechanically, is the sharpest by far, but honestly? It's so grimdark that it actually kinda spooks me. Every time I revisit it, I think I get secondhand depression.
