728 was originally built in 1968 for Penn Central as a GP40 freight locomotive. It continued to be in service with Conrail until it was purchased by Morrison Knudsen, who rebuilt it into an RP40-2C passenger locomotive for Virginia Railway Express. It became VRE #V20, and pulled commuter trains until finally going to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad and renumbered as CRRX #728, which now wears orange colours. When patched, it was numbered as C20.
Wrong. Former A&WP 728, then went off to CSX as 6648, then was rebuilt in 1993 and went on to VRE. I saw this unit many a times as a kid. It is the thing that started my love for railroading.
The locomotive currently is our switching locomotive. We're currently using our sd40s. There are talks of possibly running 728 for a short period of time, but who knows just yet
Usually it is random. But as of now, they are currently on standby incase we need them. But hopefully we can get them on by our Santa Express train in November. But as for the ride, youll love it! Cheers
So glad 728 has that classic K5LA! You don’t hear them that good anymore. I’ve gotta catch that thing some time
Looks like that might be VRE’s old diesel RP39
Yep its ex VRE V20
728 has one of the best K5LA's ever heard on a locomotive!
Agreed.
who cares about the k5?!?!?! that RS3L IS IN PERFECT CONDITION
Okay? People can like the K5LA too. I'm not the biggest RS3L fan, but 3104's is pretty good too.
CRRX #728 is an EMD RP40-2C that was formerly used on Virginia Railway Express. The 728 is formerly VRE #V20, and is now a tourist locomotive.

Which locomotive is CRRX #728?
Is 728 ex-Virginia Railway Express?
When does 728 run? I used to ride VRE so I would see this locomotive everyday. Might need to make a trip now knowing it still runs

Is there any specific date they use the F-units on or is it just random? Thinking about taking this trip soon, looks like a nice ride.
