- For fleet managers, the experience of a truck can be seen on the P&L-you want your fuel costs to go down and your profitability to go up. For the drivers, it’s all about the feeling behind the wheel. OEMs have the unenviable task of creating a top-notch experience for both.
On paper, the next-gen Peterbilt 579 hits the right business points: a 7% fuel efficiency increase when spec’d with a PACCAR powertrain and compared to the previous iteration of the 579. But how does it look and feel in its metallic flesh?
That’s the question I set out to answer when I visited the Peterbilt Motors Co. manufacturing facility in Denton, Texas, to get my hands on the next gen Peterbilt 579. Together with Jake White, product marketing manager, Peterbilt, we walk through the stand-out aerodynamic and serviceability feature and detail the safety and driver-focused features of the new truck.

I dont know about that 15 inch screen yall. I have a new T680 ordered and out salesman has pulled out all the stops to make sure my truck will not have that, it will have a standard gauge cluster instead. Take this for what it's worth but if you ask me, most owner operators are not gonna want that thing. To us, it looks like just something that's gonna cost us a fortune if it fails. Newer mega carrier trainees would probably like it I reckon, thats probably gonna be the primary customers anyways so I guess it fits really but that's just my $.02
Well now my build has been pushed back by KW to mid September, dunno if I'm gonna keep it on order or not
I think the screen is just a preference. Me personally I'm a tech nerd so I'd take it. I'm kinda looking into a T680 possibly for myself. I'd be interested in hybrid or electric trucks too, but not quite yet. I'd love an electric truck once the range is there, and the infrastructure is in place. Though to be honest I'd love to have a Euro style cabover truck, like a Scania or Volvo. I'm kinda disappointed that cabovers aren't even an option in the USA anymore unless you restore an old one. The short wheelbase, manuverability, and visibility is quite appealing to me.
I've got a 680 on order for January, was October🥵. Am I correct in understanding that you said you're getting the next generation 680 with the old style dash? I was told that's not possible. Are you getting a manual Trans? I'm not sure I want to shift a truck with a digital tack that's not separate from the spedo. Thanks
@@MrWisdom79 no its an "old" body style, but a new truck I meant. It's still supposed to be built in September, but they are currently building both body styles. I dont like that digital dash at all though, told them the only way I'd order one is if I could get a normal dash. I spec'd it with a 565/1850 X15 and an 18 speed manual as well. My current truck is a 97 379 with a 600 Cat and 18 speed so I wanted something comparable in power somewhat
@@MrWisdom79 we ordered this one in February or March, I can't recall which, but it was supposed to be built in June, but about April they told us it would be mid September or so. We'll see if it gets bumped back any longer
Inside mirrors nice. When the curtains are closed can you still see them cause that would be a nice way to see outside your truck.
I see that benefit. But I still think it's distracting.

I've seen one of these test trucks in my local area earlier this morning. I spotted it as it was coming towards me and I knew it was the new 579. Then once it was even closer to me I noticed the special wrap that's all over the truck. Great looking truck.

What engine options are there?

@@Sinerwray it really depends on your application. The Paccar engine has limited maintenance options, pretty much only KW and Pete dealers for anything major, and it has been known to be problematic, but at the same point the X15 had cam issues early on as well. I prefer the X15 personally, thats what I have spec'd in my new truck, a 565/1850 spec one
@@Sinerwray Cummins by FAR. Paccar drivelines just will not stay out of the shop. I drove three different 579's in two years for a major Canadian carrier and the trucks had to go into the shop after two out of every three trips because they'd throw codes constantly. Paccar 13 litre engines also have a known camshaft issue - the damn things will break! I was stranded in Southern California on one trip when the cam broke on a 2017 579. If I have the choice I will never drive a Paccar product again.

So far. 2022 579. 1100 miles. 1gallon of coolant, inverter doesn't work, autostart not working, I've only driven it 1 mile. Whoever drove it from Denton to Columbus. I'm about to head back to Dallas. I guess I will see how off key this truck is. Not sure

Those outside mirrors are crap and those monitors on the a pillars are creating a blind spot of their own now back to those punney outside mirrors no way would I want junk mirrors on my truck I know what I am doing and so does my drivers I don’t want to accidentally take out a dozen innocent motorist because of a millisecond camera glitch those are pickup truck mirrors what are they doing on a class 8 semi tractor anyway I can’t believe drivers are buying this junk

@@parbhdeepsangha4823 analog gauges break too, the fuel gauge over time stops being as accurate, again move with the changes or get left in the dust.....Peterbilt has a long history of innovation and they're good at it.....i bet once actually driving one of these, you'll wonder why we didnt have cameras for extra visibility before.....
