  • How to treat your home for subterranean termites in less than an hour using Imidacloprid granules for under $50. This product is BioAdvanced 700350A Termite Killer Home Perimeter Treatment, formally labeled as Bayer Advanced Carpenter Ant and Termite Killer.
    IMPORTANT!!! For the granules to work you need to have dirt around most of the house and that dirt needs to be porous enough to allow water to seep into the ground fairly quickly. To find out if the dirt around your house is porous enough, just dig a small hole next to the house that is about 4 inches deep, 8 inches long, and just the width of the shovel. Fill the hole with water and watch to see how fast it drains down into the ground. If it seeps into the ground fairly quickly, then the granules should work just fine. However, if it just kind of sits there, then the granules would not be a good choice, and you should consider trenching. If it turns out that you need to trench, then please watch my video on how to do that correctly. There is a link below to that video. Trenching is a lot more work, but it only costs about $100 to do an average size home, and it lasts 5 to 10 years. Most people can trench an entire house in one day, but you can take up to a month to get it done, and you can literally do just 10 feet at a time.
    IMPORTANT!!! Please make sure that you buy the correct granules. There are two kinds of granules now and one of them does not work. They are both manufactured by Bayer, but they really screwed up on one of these products. Make sure that you get the granules that use imidacloprid as the active ingredient. The correct granules are no longer available at a lot of the Home Depot and Lowes stores. However, they are still available on Amazon and I will give you a link to them below.
    Please also watch my video on termite identification to be sure that you have subterranean termites. Drywood termites require a different treatment and, while Formosan termites are also subterranean and can be prevented with this product, additional treatments with other products may be required to ensure total extermination of Formosan termites. Also, please watch my video on how to determine if you have termites or carpenter ants. The links to both videos are below:
    Please note, sometimes I do not always receive posted questions from viewers or I do receive them, but TH-cam does not allow me to respond to them. Sometimes I do not receive a question until six months after it was posted. These glitches do not happen often, but they do happen. It is my policy to respond to all questions within 48 hours, so if you do not hear from me in a couple of days, then please email your question to me at guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. Please do try to post questions in the comment section first and only use the email address if you don't hear from me. The reason for this is that other folks may have the same question, so it would be nice for them to learn as well. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Remember... Thank you! I was facing a $700 inspection and a $350 annual fee from a friend's company. My previous comp[any sold out to Massey - they collected my annual $140 and never showed up after two appointment. They didn't even have a record of the appointments when I called, so I fired them for lack of confidence. Bad business. So the house has been consistently treated for 40 years, but every new company I called required the $$$$$ inspection - hmmm. No can do!

      Thanks for the invite. Very much appreciated. The granules should work well for you in Jacksonville. Please also check out my video on how to inspect your house for termites. You should do this inspection every year, just to be sure that you don't have a problem. No termite treatment is 100% foolproof, which is why companies do the inspections every year. They should do it for free, but that's a whole other story. Don't get me started on what pest control companies should be doing. Some companies are very good and very honest, but I am running into more and more of them that are disappointing me. They give the industry a bad name and it's a shame. This is one of the reasons why I do what I do. My job is to save you money and keep them honest. My only regret is that I cannot reach everyone who needs my services. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marcey. Your termite company is probably not being dishonest. They just have their own paradigm about how to deal with termites, which just happens to be somewhat incorrect. What they do works. It's just that it's generally not necessary. If you just use the granules every year you will never have subterranean termites. It's just that simple. It's funny because I have had some pros write to me and say that this stuff will never work and I am misleading people. After I explain to them why it WILL work and the science behind it and I challenge them to actually give it a try, they always take down their comment and I never hear from them again. That's because they are most likely embarrassed that they posted something so stupid for a pro to say. Once it was explained to them, they realize that they should have already know why it will work. In fact, I have never seen it fail. So, you can go ahead and fire your termite company and just use the granules. Don't fire them because they are doing a bad job or being dishonest because they aren't. You should fire them because you can do this yourself for a lot less money. By the way, congratulations on the new home. Buying your first home is really exciting. I am very happy for you and you should be very proud of yourself. What a wonderful accomplishment. Also, if you don't mind, please give me a like and share my channel with some friends and family members. They will thank you for it. I will answer any question about any pest anyone may have and I do it for free, even if I don't have a video on a particular pest. My goal is to save people money, but I need kind folks like you to pass along my channel to others because about 86 percent of my views come from folks who share me with others. Only about 14 percent of my views come from folks who were searching for information. Also, it would be helpful if you subscribe. Doing that will give me a higher priority on TH-cam's algorithm and then more people will have the opportunity to find me. There are literally millions of other people that I may be able to help, but they need to find me first. So, any assistance you can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks and be well my friend.

    Sir you’ve saved me many hundreds of dollars over the next few years. They don’t sell that product in Australia however there is a similar one on eBay which I can get. Thank you again!!☺️☺️☺️☺️

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are not the first person from Australia to point out that BioAdvanced is not available there. Okay, let's talk a bit about fipronil and Imidacloprid. BioAdvanced uses Imidacloprid as the active ingredient. Both are effective against termites. The only thing is that I have never tried fipronil granules for termite extermination. Generally, the way fipronil is used is by digging a trench around the building and dumping in gallons of the product in the trench and mixing the fill soil with it while filling in the trench. That method is very effective, but also very labor intensive and expensive. Now, I don't see why a fipronil granules used the same way as a Imidacloprid granules would not work, but I have never tried it. That being said, there are also other granular products that contain Imidacloprid, that are not labeled for termites. I have never tried these either, but I see no reason why they would not work, as long as the concentration of the active ingredient is the same or higher than is used in the BioAdvanced Termite Killer. One such product is Merit 0.5 Granular Systemic Insect Control. The BioAdvanced has an active ingredient percentage of .37 percent and the Merit 0.5 Granular Systemic Insect Control has an active ingredient percentage of .5 percent, so the Merit 0.5 Granular Systemic Insect Control should actually work better. At least in theory. I do not know if this product is available in Australia, but you may be able to order it from Amazon or eBay. Again, I have not tried either the fipronil or off label Imidacloprid granules on termites, but if I had to choose, I would pick the Imidacloprid granules because that is the ingredient that has been proven to work when used in granular form on termites when sprinkling it around the building and watering it in. In any event, I would love it if you would get back to me with the results of whichever product you go with, so that I can share that information with other folks from Australia who may also have the same issue. Finally, I cannot tell you how humbled I am that folks in Australia are watching my videos. That totally blows my mind. I happen to have a soft spot in my heart for Australia because I visited Sydney for a week during the Vietnam war. I was a Marine at the time and I went there for R&R and I totally fell in love with the culture and the people. I gave serious thought to moving there, but my family made it clear that they needed me in the States. Still, I have very fond memories of your country and I was so lucky to have the opportunity to experience it.

      @@rezaazar6386 Apparently it is not easy to buy pesticides in Australia. Most places seem to restrict sales to licensed pest controllers. Someone mentioned a place in Queensland that will sell fipronil in liquid form to do it yourselfers, but I have not confirmed that information. I think that would also be quite a drive for you. Still, I will place a link below. Also, there is a company that I think will ship PCT Fipronil Granular Ant Killer to you. It's a granular product that, as the label implies, is for ants. I have no idea if it will work for termites, but it may. You could try to sprinkle it around the house right up to the foundation, hoping that it will leach into the ground the same way that the BioAdvanced Termite Killer does. I think it could work, but I have never seen or used this product, so it would require some experimentation. I will place a link below. As for eBay, they have pretty much everything you could want, but I don't know if anyone will ship to Australia. I plan to write to the Bayer Company and find out why they only distribute in the US. I'm guessing that they don't want to mess around with the regulations. Still, I am going to ask. I'm sorry that I cannot be of more assistance.

    Hi Guy, I'm loving your videos. You are so thorough and calm. I seem to have brought termites to my garden beds through mulch from the store. When I bought the house 5 yrs ago, I went around with the inspector and bug inspector asking them questions and they told me what to look for, so I've always kept an eye on things. Anyway, I have termites in the mulch that touches my front patio/porch, and the side of my house. I've checked my whole house, but these were the only two places I put mulch in. There are no mud tunnels, and I don't see damage anywhere. I do think I have ants making homes inside my weep holes though. I ordered the Taurus, can I just treat the exterior of my home with it (I'm also doing this for pest control per another video of yours), and also soak the mulch beds? Since I don't seem to have an "issue" other than termites being present, would I need to trench? I'm thinking in the future, I would use the Bayer product that you reference in this video, since I already ordered the Taurus, and we have a brown widow problem in our area (as well as roaches). I live in Houston, TX. Thank you!

      First, I love your username. It reminds me of Gone With the Wind. Very cool. You should know that you most likely did not bring the termites into your garden beds in the mulch. They were most likely there already and you just provided them with a tasty food source. Subterranean termites are fairly easy to deal with, but since you live in Houston, you may have a more serious problem. You are in an area where Formosan termites are a problem and these guys are also known as super bugs for a reason. They are arguably the most destructive and aggressive termite known to the world. I don't know if the termites you are looking at are Formosan, but they could be and you need them gone right now. They are nothing to fool around with. So, here's what you do. Don't just think about treating your home with the BioAdvanced granules. Just do it. Do it now. Believe me. If you get Formosan termites in you home, you are going to regret it and you can stop them cold with the granules. The thing is though that after they get in, the granules may not work to get rid of them. The granules will do a wonderful job preventing Formosan termites, but once you have them you are in for a nightmare straight from the bowels of Hell. So, spend the $50 and regard yourself lucky that, so far, you have not seen tunnels. Keep in mind though that unlike regular subterranean termites where the tunnels are close to the ground, Formosan tunnels may be up in the attic, so you need to go check. Immediately after treating the perimeter of the house, mix up some of that Taurus SC in a battery operated sprayer and soak the mulch really good. It's best to move the mulch and also spray the ground under the mulch as well as soaking the mulch really good. The nice thing about the granules and the Taurus SC is that the termites will not know that they are being poisoned and they will happily pass through those pesticides and take them back to the colony and share it with the other termites, including the queen. Then it's lights out for the entire colony. I don't mean to scare you, but you would be justified here in being concerned. These guys may not be Formosan, but you cannot take chances where you live. You should just assume that they are Formosan and get rid of them ASAP.
      Now let's talk about the ants. You need to identify the species to be sure of what you are dealing with. If they are carpenter ants, then there could be a satellite colony inside the home. The problem with carpenter ants is that they do not always go outside the home to forage for food, so they may not cross the barrier that you put there. So, take a look at these gals (They are all female). If they are large and black, then they are probably carpenter ants. If they are tiny, then they are not so much of a worry. The Taurus SC should take care of them, unless they are an inside ant like a Pharaoh ant. You will know because you will see activity inside the house. If they are carpenter ants, then you may need to do an interior treatment as well. I suspect that you have already watched my carpenter ant video, but I will give you a link to it in case you have not seen it and in case you do have carpenter ants.
      Finally, you mentioned roaches. Of all the bugs I have encountered, I hate roaches the most. Please let me know if you are getting these things inside the house. If the roaches are quite large, then they are most likely American roaches and the exterior treatment will usually take care of them. However, if you have gone into the kitchen early in the morning and saw small roaches scampering away when you turned on the lights, then you have a serious problem and you need to get back to me about it.
      I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and please feel free to ask all the questions you like. I am always here to help.

      Thank you so much for watching the video and for posting your comment. The problems that you are going to have in Australia are that I don't know of anybody that will ship the granules outside of the United States, you have very restrictive laws that prevent you from buying a lot of pesticides, and I think you have some species of termites there that are quite different than the most common ones we have here in the States. Even here we have a couple of species where the granules will not work. Happily, those species are not common, but they do exist. Most of the species that we have here are subterranean, and only travel just a few inches below the surface of the ground. The way the granules work is that they leach into the ground a few inches, where the termites travel back and forth to and from the colony. The colony is always underground and never in the home, and the termites have to go back to the colony to obtain the moisture they need to survive, and to feed the other termites that do not leave the colony. That means they have no choice put the pass through the termiticide that was released by the granules. They bring it back to the colony and share it with the other termites. Then it's lights out for the entire colony. I am given to understand that in Australia you may have some species that are capable of traveling much deeper in the ground and so they may be able to avoid the granules. Here in the US, we never treat down to the footing of the foundation, but that is a very common practice in Australia. That may be why you are looking at that high treatment estimate. There is a good chance that this would be something you could treat yourself, and even though you have very restrictive laws, I think I know a place that will ship some pesticides to you. I will place a link below for you. Of course, you will need to know the species, so that you will know how to treat. Hopefully, the pest control company that gave you the estimate listed the specific species and also gave you a written treatment plan. If they did not, then I recommend going back to them and asking what these specific species is and tell them you want to know exactly how they plan go about treating the problem. Once you have this information, you will be able to determine if this is something you want to try to do yourself. If you do, then I recommend purchasing a product that has fipronil as the active ingredient. I think it is available from the supplier that I am listing below. Just search their site for "fipronil."

      If you find that this will be more than you want to take on, then the most cost-effective thing you can do would be to get more than one estimate. I don't know how it is in Australia, but I can tell you that here in the States, prices for pest control can vary wildly. I have seen estimates for termite treatments vary as much as $1000 between the lowest and the highest bidder. Pest controllers here in the US do not charge for estimates, so I always tell people to get as many estimates as possible. I even did a video on how to hire a pest controller without getting ripped off. It may be helpful for you to watch that video. Some of the information may not apply to Australia, but it may still give you some good ideas about how to get the best price. I will place a link below for you.

      I am so sorry that you are having this problem and that I cannot be of more assistance to you. I am an expert with regard to termite species here in the US, but not in Australia. So, all I can do is provide you with the best information that I have, but I may or may not be correct about all of it. I can only go by what people have told me in the past.

      I do wish you well mate and I hope it works out for you.

      @@SteveMack Thank you so much for those very kind words. I just wish I could have given you a better solution to your problem. A lot of people don't realize this, but there are over 2000 different species of termites in the world. Here in the US we only have about 40. Of those, there are less than 10 species that attack homes. The majority of those species are subterranean, and all act the same way, so they get treated the same way. In fact, they are so similar in behavior that we just kind of lump them together and just call them subterranean termites. Unfortunately, this is not the case in many other countries. There are over 300 different species in Australia. I think the vast majority of them do not attack homes, but I think some of the ones that do can be quite nasty and may behave quite different than what I have seen in my career. That is why I think it is smart to consult pest controllers in your area. When you chat with pest controllers, I recommend asking a lot of questions. I would want to know the specific species, but it would also be helpful to ask them how that specific species behaves. I would ask them things like, where do they colonize, how large are typical colonies, how deep do they travel under the ground if they are subterranean, how quickly could this species destroy your home, what are all the treatment options, which treatment plan works the best, how much does each treatment option cost, what chemicals do you plan to use, and so forth. Speaking with a local expert is a wonderful opportunity to educate yourself on the species that is attacking your home and that information will prove to be valuable as you speak with other pest controllers. If you start talking their language, then they are less apt to try and hand you a snow job. Don't be all that surprised if you find that different pest controllers give you somewhat different information. This can happen for a variety of reasons. You may encounter a pest controller that does not know as much as they should, they may have been poorly trained, or they may be trying to frighten you into giving them the job without shopping further. I visited Australia in the late 1960s, and I found the people to be absolutely wonderful, but people are still people around the world, and I'm sure you have your share of folks who would be more than happy to take advantage of you. I guess all of that is to say that I recommend a grain of caution when you speak with pest controllers. When you have more than one pest controller telling you the same exact thing, then that is probably what is actually going on. Beware of the lowballers’ that give you a great price, but are not going to get the job done correctly. I see it here all the time. They come in and offer to treat for $300, instead of the $2000 that the others charge. That should be a red flag, but it is amazing how many folks get talked into it and end up with the termites eating away fat and happy. That doesn’t mean that a spot treatment or something like that won’t work, but it may not be a sure thing. I have run into situations where I could not trench and I offered to spot treat for free, just to see if it would help, before going nuclear on the problem. Sometimes it does work, but it’s kind of what we call here, “Throwing a Hail Mary Pass.” That’s why I would never charge for it, and I would always explain the risks. So, be careful. My fantasy is that the industry is a lot more honest in Australia than it is here, but who knows?

      I wish you well my friend. Termites aside, you live in an absolutely beautiful country. I almost settled there after the war, but decided against it because of my family. I have no doubt that it changed a lot since I visited, but I still have very fond memories of the place.

      Be well mate.

    Guy, thank you for taking the time not only to MAKE these videos but for REPLYING to our questions and comments. I live in Yuma, AZ (red zone) and have seen swarms of wood-eating termites but our immediate problems are the mud tracks in my unattached garage. When we are quoted (pretty steep) prices (btw, for what oftentimes seems like cursory treatment), it is only for the visible subterranean termites, so I don't lose anything--in fact, save some--by at least treating those myself. My question is about imidaclorprid vs fipronil. The Bayer website suggests the imidaclorprid is not a double-kill(?) and will not reach the colony as compared to the fipronil, which will. Don't get me wrong, I am not looking forward to the work or the cost (I'm retired, too!), but should I bite the bullet, or in this case the fipronil, and start trenching? Thanks again.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe. You made a very well though out question and I will do my best to answer it. The active ingredient in the BioAdvanced granules is, as you mentioned, imidaclorprid. This insecticide works differently than fipronil in the manner in which it kills insects. As a result, the kill time for imidaclorprid can be expected to take more time than would be the case with fipronil. That being said, I hate to disagree with Bayer, but the termites WILL take the imidaclorprid back to the colony and they WILL share it with the other termites, including the queen, just the same way as would happen with fipronil. In both cases, there is a barrier placed around the building that the termites must pass through. All subterranean termites, with the sole exception of Formosan termites, must return to the colony on a regular basis to obtain moisture and to bring food back to the colony. When they do, they have no choice but to contact the pesticide and then share it with the other termites in the colony. This will ultimately result in the death of the queen and then there will be no more colony and no more infestation. Both imidaclorprid and fipronil have this methodology in common. The difference is in the kill time. Fipronil will work faster than imidaclorprid and that is why I always tell people that you need to give the BioAdvanced granules four to eight weeks to work, while trenching with fipronil will probably get the job done in two to four weeks. The extra time needed for the imidaclorprid to work is not a major issue though because subterranean termites are fairly slow eaters and they will not do all that much more damage in the additional four weeks that it takes for the imidaclorprid to work. Also, you can give the BioAdvanced granules a bit of a kick if you spot treat the mud tubes with fipronil foam. Just break open the mud tubes about two inches long and shoot the foam in both directions for a couple of seconds. The termites will rebuild the tubes and then take the fipronil back to the colony and now they will be sharing both the imidaclorprid and the fipronil with the other termites. If you have visible damage in areas of the building, you can also drill small holes about four inches apart in the damaged areas and shoot the foam into all the holes for about five seconds. A can of fipronil foam costs less than $30 and one can is all you should need. So, if it were me, I would not trench. If you like, I can provide you with the research that was done on imidaclorprid that proves that termites will take this pesticide back to the colony with them and share it to kill the queen. This has been well established in several countries and imidaclorprid is now the most widely used pesticide in the entire world. It is very effective and much safer than fipronil, albeit somewhat slower.
      If you live in the red area, then you should also do an exterior treatment on your home every three months. I have a video on that and I will place a link below for it. You should do the first treatment with Taurus SC and three months later use Talstar P. Then three months after that go back to the Taurus SC and so forth. You see, drywood termites often enter through the eves and facia boards near the roof and attack in the attic. They also can enter from around windows, doors, pipe penetrations, and other cracks and crevices on the sides of the building. Drywood termites are much harder to deal with than subterranean termites, so it is very wise to prevent them rather than try to treat for them after they infest the home. The pros will not do drywood termite prevention because they will not apply pesticides above their heads, which means they will not treat the eves and the facia boards. So, drywood prevention is something that you must do yourself.
      I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Please let me know if I can answer anymore questions. Be well my friend.

      @@joet.7296 The containers tell you that you can do 200 linear feet, but the truth is that I never get quite that much. Of course, I am probably overapplying it, but my philosophy on pesticides is that it's better to use too much than too little and there is no way to really measure out how much you are using with the granules, so it is very easy to not use enough. For that reason I make sure that I have them down heavy enough to get the job done. So, I'm thinking that I get more like 150 linear feet from a container. That's just me though. I find that most people fail at pest control because they are too cheap with the products. They try to save money by not applying enough to do the job and when it fails they hire a pro that costs way more than if they had just applied enough pesticide in the first place. It's the old penny wise and pound foolish sort of thing. So, I do put the granules down heavier than needed, but they never fail to work that way. It always takes more than one container to do my house, but the left over from the second container can still be used next year, so it does not go to waste. So, if I were doing 450 linear feet I would definitely be buying three containers. You won't use all of that third container, but the left over will be fine to use it next year and this is something that needs to be done annually.
      When you talk about drilled holes, I am guessing that you are talking about holes that were bored in the concrete. If that is the case, you can reuse these holes. They were originally drilled so that an injection rod could go down below the concrete, but you do not have that kind of equipment. So, what you can do is get the longest 1/2 inch drill bit that you can find. Lowes and Home Depot usually have them that are 12 inches long and sometimes longer. It does not need to be a concrete drill bit. Also, buy a 1/2 inch concrete drill bit that is just long enough to go through the slab. Drill a hole through the filler that the last pest controller placed in the holes with the concrete drill. Often times they refill them with concrete that will ruin a regular drill bit. Sometimes not though. If they used just a softer caulking filler, then a regular drill may go right through it. If they filled with concrete, then you will probably need a 1/2 inch hammer drill. After you get through the slab, then you can just drill the deepest hole you can into the dirt that is under the slab. Ideally, you want to have the hole at least six inches below the slab. Then mix up some Taurus SC at 0.8 oz per gallon of water and fill the holes up with it to overflowing. A funnel is helpful. Let the holes drain down overnight and then fill up the holes again. Let them drain down again overnight and then fill them back in with some concrete filler that you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. This process is not as good as a high pressure rod, but it will definitely help. Normally these holes are drilled 12 to 18 inches apart and that is too far apart for a funnel and gravity system to reach all the areas, so what I am suggesting will result in gaps between the holes that are not covered by pesticide. For a funnel and gravity system to work well, you generally want to drill the holes about six inches apart. That way the pesticide only needs to leach three inches to each side of the hole. It is unlikely that it will leach much more than that. That is a lot of drilling, so I typically do not recommend it. I generally just treat all exposed sides of sidewalks, driveways, patios, and so forth and water it in several times. That being said, it never hurts to treat under a concrete slab. When it comes to most pests, more is generally better. I am a great believer in overkill. Also, you should know that, while I have seen termites attack from under concrete slabs, more often than not they are attacking from dirt that is up against the house. Boring concrete is more of a, "let's not take any chances" sort of thing. Not always, but most of the time you will see the termite damage along an exterior wall that abuts dirt and not something like a concrete patio. I never say never though and I have seen it happen. Just not that often. Anyway, I hope that helps. Don't worry my friend. You've got this.

    • @GuysPestSolutions

      Hi David. If you have subterranean termites, then this product will kill the existing termites that are already infesting you home. You can speed up the process if you know where the termites are, by treating the infested area directly with a fipronil foam. Now, not all termites are subterranean, but 90 percent of them are. Before you proceed with the BioAdvanced treatment, let's make sure that you do have subterranean termites and not something like Formosan or drywood termites. Please have a look at my DIY Termite Identification video. I will place a link below. There is a map in that video that shows where Formosan and drywood termites are a problem. If you live outside of the red and orange areas, then you most likely just have plain vanilla subterranean termites that are very easy to get rid of with the BioAdvanced granules and maybe some fipronil foam. However, if you live inside of the red or orange areas, then please get back to me so that we can talk about how to make a positive identification of the species. Regardless of what it is, I can assist you with it and I am very happy to do that. I know that it sounds strange that, if you just place the BioAdvanced granules outside, that it will kill the termites inside as well, yet that is exactly what happens. You see, subterranean termites MUST return to the ground fairly often to obtain moisture and to bring food back to the rest of the colony, which is always in the ground and never in your home. These guys never colonize in your home, they always colonize in the ground. They just go out to eat and they regard your home as their favorite restaurant. So, since they must go home fairly often, they pass through the BioAdvanced granules and they bring the pesticide back to the colony with them and they share it with the rest of the termites. Then it's lights out for the entire colony, including the queen. By shooting a fipronil foam into know areas of activity, you are placing the pesticide directly into an area that the termites are working on. Just like the BioAdvanced granules, the termites do not know that this is a poison, so they just ignore it and take it back to the colony with them. So, by doing both treatments, it is virtually impossible for the termites to avoid contact with at least one of the treatments. Now, you may ask why not just do the foam? Well, you may be infested by more than one colony and the other colony may be infesting an area that you do not know about. The BioAdvanced granules will place a barrier around your entire home that all the termites must pass through. The fipronil foam works faster than the granules, so it will give the process a boost as well. It only costs about $27 for a can and one can is all you need. I will place a link below for it. @@disnalee If you have subterranean termites, then this product will kill the existing termites that are already infesting you home. To use it, just drill a small hole about a half inch deep into the area of the infestation and shoot the foam in for about five seconds. You should do this about every four to six inches for the entire length of the damaged areas. Again, please have a look at the map in my DIY Termite Identification video first to be sure that you are not in a hot area for Formosan or drywood termites before you treat and get back to me if you are in a red or orange areas. Keep monitoring for mud tubes. If you see any mud tubes, then break open about a 2-inch section to see if there are any termites inside. If not, then wait to see if the mud tube is rebuilt. If it is not rebuilt in a few days, then the infestation is gone. If you find an active infestation after using the granules, then please get back to me. The granules usually take up to 12 weeks to work. That is by design, because you need to kill them slowly. It sounds like you already got them, but let's make sure. Be well my friend.

    Wow, exactly the information I needed! After discovering termites in the exterior wall of my garage, I had one of these new "advanced" exterminating companies look at the bugs, which looked like ants to me. The guy said they were termites for sure. He wanted to set up a contract and do the bait treatments. Apparently, they don't use any actual poison for the termites. This was going to cost $1000 or more. I told him I'd think about it.
    So, I then found out about the Spectracide Termite bait stakes and bought them for around $50 and placed them around the garage. That was a few months ago. Two of the spikes have now popped up. One of them popped up today and when I pulled it out, it was infested with what looked to be fire ants and larvae.
    Anyway, since I did, according to the exterminator, have termites in the garage wall, I am going to follow your advice and apply this Termite Killer granules in addition to my spikes, especially since the spikes take a long time to have an effect on the colony.

      Keep in mind that for the granules to work you need to have dirt around most of the house and that dirt needs to be porous enough to allow water to seep into the ground fairly quickly. Make sure that you buy the correct granules. If it turns out that you need to trench, then please watch my video on how to do that correctly. Trenching is a lot more work, but it only costs about $100 to do an average size home, and it lasts 5 to 10 years. Most people can trench an entire house in one day, but you can take up to a month to get it done, and you can literally do just 10 feet at a time.

      If you have a landscape barrier around the house, then you need to look to see if it is porous or not. Most of it is. Just remove the dirt, gravel, mulch, or whatever is over it, and pour some water on it. If the water runs off really fast, then you would need to pull it back 6 inches to apply the granules. If the water goes through it, then you can apply the granules right over it. I hope that helps. Be well Valerie.

I will be applying the brand you are using and will add results after... Perhaps with some video.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Rik. I love feedback. Please let me know how you make out. Also, I forgot to mention in the video that the process takes between two to eight weeks to work, depending upon how heavy you apply the granules, the soil conditions, the extent of the infestation, and other factors. It is not meant to be a fast process because you want the termites to take the pesticide back to the colony and share it with the other termites. The colony is always in the ground and never in your home. Since the termites must return to the colony fairly often, they have no choice but to pass through the pesticide. If it were a fast kill product, then the termites would die before they could effectively spread it around the colony. It's the same with the trenching that the pros do. It works the same way, except trenching is a little faster because you don't need to worry about the leaching process. Still, trenching takes two to four weeks in most cases. So, please be patient. After eight weeks, break open a mud tube and see if you have any activity. My guess is that you will not see any termites. Don't worry that it takes so long to work. Subterranean termites are slow eaters and will not do much damage in this relatively short period of time. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. I look forward to hearing how it all went for you.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The granules should do a great job for you, but you can give the process a bit of a kick if you also treat the mud tubes. It's really cheap and it speeds up the process quite a bit. Just get a can of fipronil foam. Then break open each mud tube with a two inch putty knife. You just want the break to be two inches long and scrape it down to the wall. Then shoot the foam into both sides of the open tube and on the surface where you removed the tube. The termites will rebuild the tube and they will take the fipronil back to the colony with them to share with the other termites. This is the same way that the granules work, but the fipronil is faster acting. The granules take two to eight weeks to kill the colony and the fipronil treatment will cut that in half. It only costs about $30 a can and one can is all you need. You don't need to use the foam because the granules will do the job on their own, but it can't hurt. I will place a link below for the foam. Thanks for watching.

Digging trenches will be tough at our age. But above all, we just have to get these exterminated! Thank you again - (and it's so admirable how you've replied to every question!)

      The granules are a good choice in about 95% of situations I run into. Trenching is a lot more work, but it only costs about $100 to do an average size home, and it lasts 5 to 10 years. Most people can trench an entire house in one day, but you can take up to a month to get it done, and you can literally do just 10 feet at a time. I was working with a single mom that just went out and dug 10 feet every evening after work. It took a while, but she got it done, and no more termites.

      Make sure that you buy the correct granules. You need the ones that have imidacloprid as the active ingredient. A lot of the Home Depot and Lowes stores no longer sell the correct granules, but you can get them from Amazon. I will give you a link to them.

      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    Thank you Guy! Just bought a newly built home here in Panama City, FL, and knew nothing other than that my neighbor paid a lot of money for Orkin to install monitoring stations and drill into the base of their brick vernier every two feet or so and I assume they sprayed something in there. Their house is new as well. Then they filled those holes in the Morter with a dark gray monitor instead of a light-colored one they disturbed. Looks hideous. Anway, after watching many of your awesome videos, I ordered a BioAdanced Granules 700350A from Amazon. Will sprinkle that as you described yearly and call it a day. Your monitor station Bottles are a great project I may do with my Grandson as well sometime but feel the granules will provide the peace of mind I need. THANK YOU!!!

      It is very difficult to buy any sort of pesticides in California. You can no longer purchase the granules from Lowe's or Home Depot because they are now selling a similar product that does not work. So, you really need to order this stuff and most places will not ship to California. Try ordering them from Amazon first, but if they will not ship to you, then order them from domyown.com. I will give you a link for both suppliers.

      With regard to drywood termites, the granules do not work for them. If you do not have an existing infestation, then you certainly do not want one because the only way to get rid of them is to fumigate and that is expensive. Therefore, you would be wise to do a preventive treatment every two months. I have a video on how to do that and I will give you a link to it.

      I hope that helps. Be well Antonia.

You only need to seal it in for exterior use. For under the house and the attic, you don't need to seal it. I will give you a link to a short video on the subject. When you are in the attic, be sure to check for kick out holes and frass. @@antoniacain873 There are any number of good sealers available at Home Depot. Some are clear and some have a stain in them. The clear is best for new fences and the sealer with stain is best for older fences. I do not recommend water-based sealers. I don't think they hold up as well. Don't worry about cleaning up oil-based sealers. Just buy some cheap rollers and brushes from the Dollar Tree and throw them away. You can probably apply it with a $10 garden sprayer as well. Again, just chuck it when you are finished. Ask someone at the paint dept. for a recommendation and they will give you good advice. Congratulations on purchasing your first home. You live in Formosan termite territory and just on the edge of drywood termite territory. Close enough where you should check the species to make sure that these guys are a common variety of termites and not something more serious. I know that I was probably just speaking Greek to you, but the takeaway should be that there is more than one species of termites where you live, and the granules do not work for all of them. There is a good chance that the granules will work in your case, but I think it would be wise to make sure. So, I would like you to watch one more video that will explain how to identify termite species. I will give you a link to it. Don't worry. This is not as hard as you may think. All I need you to do is look for mud tubes, kick out holes, and frass. I explain what they are in the video. I need to know if you see any kick out holes and frass anywhere in the home, including the attic and crawlspace/basement. I also need to know if you are seeing mud tubes and where in the house you are seeing them. Are they outside? Are they in the attic. Are they in the eaves? Are they coming up from the ground? If you have a crawlspace or basement, are they in there? Also, can you obtain a specimen of one of the termites? If these are termites, then they should be cream colored. Some of them will have red heads and I need to look at one those. So, catch it alive and put it in a jar. It will die quickly, then take a photo of it for me and send it to guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. I need one with a red head and I need the photo to be as close up as possible and very well in focus. That will allow me to make a positive ID on it. If these guys are not cream colored, then they are not termites. If they are black, then you have carpenter ants.
      Meanwhile, it certainly cannot hurt to apply the granules. You live in California, and everything is illegal there when it comes to pest control. So, if you cannot obtain the granules from Amazon, then you can get them from domyown.com. I will provide a links for them. Try Amazon first because they are cheaper. Do not buy them from Home Depot or Lowes because they no longer sell the right ones.
      Please get back to me and let me know what you find out. Be well my friend.

    Hi Guy - Your answer to Paul was GOLD to me - I was not aware that termites had to return to their nest via the ground and did not live permanently in the structure - Mine are in our shed and come from huge 50 to 80 foot trees about 8 feet away - Here white ant guys are quoting AU$2500 to $2800 to eliminate the nest (already paid up for this treatment in 2012) when all I have to do is surround the shed which is about 10ft by 10 foot with the whole contents of the termite killer (AU$ 196 delivered on Amazon) - Shed is never entered as it is only used for storing spare tiles from bathrooms and kitchen when building so I am going to spray walls with chlordane and deildren plus Borate wood treatment - Happy to do it every year or so and to make baits from the stuff - SO SO glad I saw your youtube - Thanks mate - Brian

      Hi Brian. I'm thinking from the "AU$" that you live in Australia. The problem in Australia is that most pesticides are banned by the government, unless you have a license, so they are hard to get. Also, the BioAdvanced granules are only available in the US and most suppliers will not ship to Australia. That makes do it yourself treatments a lot more challenging. I am not entirely familiar with Australian law, but if you can get your hands on a product called "Bora-Care" and the shed has unfinished walls inside, then you are in luck. If you mix Bora-Care at a ratio of one to one with water and simply spray it on all surfaces inside the shed, then it will penetrate into the wood deep enough so that the termites will eat it and then take it back to colony. That will kill off the entire colony. As an added benefit, the Bora-Care treatment lasts forever and never needs to be reapplied. Use it once and you're done. The wood must be unfinished though. It cannot be painted, stained, or sealed in any way. Bora-Care uses boron as the active ingredient, which is perfectly safe for the environment and it's a substance that is found naturally in nature. It's nontoxic and is used in all sorts of products, including some laundry detergents. That does not mean that Australia has not banned it for use by unlicensed people, but there is no reason for it to be banned. So, if it were me, this would be my first line of defense in your situation. Please let me know if you can find Bora-Care and if you want to go with this option. If you do, I can provide information on how to use it properly.
      By the way. I visited Sydney in 1969 and I loved it. I was on R&R from Vietnam and was able to spend a week there. I'm sure things have changed a lot since my visit, but I have no doubt that the people are just as wonderful as they were when I was there. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I was temped to move there, but decided not to because of my family. Still, I remember my visit fondly. You live in a wonderful country.
      Be well my friend.

    Hello Guy, when I learned that my house had termites, TH-cam was the first I did. Your channel was the most down to earth on the subject, have a lot of respect for you. About mid March found about 8-10 dead black swarmer's in one room. Study the bodies and wings, termites not ants. Mid July found termites. Studied the county extension about termites, I'm in North West Tennessee, believe they are eastern subterranean. Have a brick veneer house with a walk and drive in basement ( half of the basement is carved into a hill side 8Ft ). It appears its this ground level their entering at the top of the cinder block wall down to the base boards of the basement (hope that's all ).
    The house was built 1976. Its been treated before, near ground level the mortar for the brick has been drilled every 16" ( holes not filled in ) and the concrete pads has been drilled and filled at the non buried half of the house, no holes in the cinder block. Today is August 29, applied BioAdvanced 700350A on July 27, pumped 3.5 oz Taurus SC per 4 gallons in the brick veneer back forth per 10 Ft. August 1. Broke open a mud tube today at the same place, still have them, but about 1/2 as many and they seem to move a little slower? I'm I being inpatient? Should I do something else. Just today noticed my 4yr. old roof is sagging waiting for the roofer. Read somewhere that subterranean rarely attack roofs?
    I know this is long winded, but thought I should give as much info as i could.
    Again thank you for a great service to others. Your awesome

      It takes up to 12 weeks for any termiticide to be fully effective. This is a slow kill process. The termites colonize in the ground and never in your home, so you need to give the termites time to bring the termiticide back to the colony and share it with the other termites. They do not live in your home. They are only going there because it's their favorite restaurant. Not all termites like to eat out though, so the ones that do eat out must bring takeout back to the colony to feed the rest of the termites. When they do, they will pass through the termiticide that was released by the granules and they will bring it with them back to colony. That is why you don't want to kill them too fast. Don't worry though. Termites are very slow eaters and will do very little damage in this relatively short period of time. So, if you treated the house on July 27, then you need to give it at least until the end of October before you begin to worry that it didn't work. You are doing the correct thing though by checking the mud tubes for activity. You only need to check the mud tubes every two weeks though. Just scrape off about a 2-inch section of a mud tube to see if there's any activity. The termites should rebuild the mud tube and that is exactly what you want them to do. If you want to give the process a bit of a boost, then you can shoot some fipronil foam into both sides of the broken mud tube when you inspect. In fact, you can do this to all the mud tubes that you find. The foam works the same way as the granules, but by shooting it in the mud tubes you are guaranteeing that the termites are passing through it. I will give you a link for the product that I use.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a very good question. The pesticide that is in the granules is effective against just about any insect you can encounter. The thing is that the granules release the pesticide into the ground. So, will this provide some surface barrier protection? I suppose it could, but I don't think the surface protection will last for a year. The product breaks down when exposed to sunlight. It lasts longer in the ground because there is not light. I would be amazed if there were any surface residual properties left after three months. While I use this product every year for termites, I also do a perimeter treatment every three months with Talstar P. Not only does it protect me from American cockroaches (Palmetto bugs), it also prevents just about every other pest you can think of, including drywood termites. That is because I also treat around all the windows, doors, cracks and crevices, pipe penetrations, eves, and facia boards. We have a problem with drywood termites here in Florida and the granules do not work on them because they are not subterranean. These guys fly to your house and then enter through openings around windows, doors, pipes, eves, and facia boards. If you place a pesticide barrier on all of these places, then the drywood termites will die if they try to enter. Drywood termites are expensive to treat, so it's a very good idea to do a preventive treatment for them. I have a video on how to do it and I will place a link below. As an added benefit, this treatment will also prevent wasps, spiders, American cockroaches, stink bugs, and many other pests as well. If you live in Florida, then this treatment is a must.
      I hope that helps.

      You are very welcome. Please keep in mind that for the granules to work you need to have dirt around most of the house and that dirt needs to be porous enough to allow water to seep into the ground fairly quickly. However, if it just kind of sits there, then the granules would not be a good choice, and you should consider trenching, if you have an active infestation. If it turns out that you need to trench, then please watch my video on how to do that correctly. Trenching is a lot more work, but it only costs about $100 to do an average size home, and it lasts 5 to 10 years. Thank you, Guy. Finally did this around our home perimeter, but also so tired of ants, I treated every bed and open expansion joint just before it rained. I fight them every spring and summer through the entire season. Now, ants are all gone! And hopefully, any termites after putting down soil and mulch will be taken care of.

      The granules will kill some ants, but it's really intended for subterranean termites because it leaches into the ground where the termites travel. So, the ant kill may be more temporary. If you really want to eliminate the ants for good, then please watch my video on how to to that. That treatment will end the ant problem for good, but you do need to retreat every 60 to 90 days, depending upon where you live and the weather conditions.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions

      @@Beltreality You do need to treat the stump. I will give you the procedure for it. You can usually get away with just using the granules around the house. Keep in mind that for the granules to work you need to have dirt around most of the house and that dirt needs to be porous enough to allow water to seep into the ground fairly quickly. Most people can trench an entire house in one day, but you can take up to a month to get it done, and you can literally do just 10 feet at a time.
      Make sure that you buy the correct granules. You need the ones that have imidacloprid as the active ingredient. A lot of the Home Depot and Lowes stores no longer sell the correct granules, but you can get them from Amazon. I will give you a link to them.

I will give you a link to my video on how to make them for under 50 cents each. I put them around my entire house for less than $25.
      To treat the stump, drill holes in the top of the stump that are about 1/2 inch wide and just as deep as you can make them. You should try to drill them at least 12 inches deep. Ideally, you should drill them about every 4 inches apart, but if that is too much work, just drill as many as you can. The more of them you drill the better. Also drill holes that are about 12 inches apart around the base of the stump that are on a downward angle, so that the drill bit is aiming under and to the center of the stump. After the holes are all drilled, then mix Taurus SC at 0.8 oz per gallon and fill up the holes with it. You can mix it in a bucket and use a funnel to get it into the holes. It's a good idea to put a cork in the stump holes or fill them in with some sort of caulking to keep the rain out of the holes. If the holes are sealed to prevent light and rain from entering, the Taurus SC can last several years. The hope is that termites will find their way into the areas you treated and take the Taurus SC back to the colony and share it with the other termites. Then it's lights out for the entire colony. Sooner or later, they will come in contact with the Taurus SC. They don't know that this is harmful, so they will happily pass right through it and eat wood that is contaminated with it.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

Lol thousands of them, and they seem to be gone now. Yet I was worried about the termites, don't want them to ever be a problem. You are very welcome. The granules should work well for you in Florida. Please keep in mind though that the granules only work for subterranean termites. You also have drywood termites in your area. These guys fly to your house and do not travel underground like subterranean termites do, so you need to prevent them differently. I have a video on how to do that and I will give you a link to it. Please keep an eye out for frass and kick out holes. Frass looks a little like sawdust and you will find it on the floor next to the walls and sometimes under cabinets or even furniture. Just above the frass, you will see tiny holes that were created by the termites to remove the frass. You should know that pest control companies usually do not do a good job finding drywood termites because they are easy to miss. Therefore, even if you had your home inspected prior to purchase, they may have missed an infestation.
      Too bad that you didn't find my video on fire ants before you paid for a treatment. My video shows how to get rid of fire ants for about $10. Anyone can do it and it literally take minutes to do. I promise that the fire ants will most likely be back. That is because your neighbors have them too and they will eventually find their way back to your yard. If that happens, just do the treatment in my video. It works overnight and it's super easy to do.
      Please call on me for any pest problems you may have. My service is always free, and I am happy to do it. If you email me, I can show you an easy way to prevent both fire ants and drywood termites at the same time, that I cannot share in the comments section. My email is guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. If you send an email, please remind me who you are. I get a lot of email and it is easy to get people mixed up because the issues are often very similar. Guy,
    I have been watching your video's about termites. We have lived in our house for 30 years and have had termites three times in the same area of the house. Termites were found in the subfloor beam in the basement. This beam connects with the band board of the house. It is in the area where our patio/patio steps meets the house. We have had two treatments of drill holes in the basement floors concrete patio. A few years back we had the bait stations installed there are about 16 of them. The last termite activity was two summers ago in which i found termite damage in the basement subfloor beam. The termite company came and said yes we see the damage but there are no longer any active termites. I requested for the house to be retreated. They treated the soil around the house and did the retreat in basement drill holes and areas outside that had concrete as well such as our patio. The bait stations did not prevent the termites. The stations are being checked every three months. Should i be doing other treatments along with the bait stations? Thank you

    • @GuysPestSolutions

      Hi Charlie. Thanks for reaching out to me. You came to the right place for information on all sorts of pests. From what you are saying, it sounds like you and the pest controller have done everything humanly possible to kill the termite colony. It has been my experience that pest control companies that do termites pretty much know what they are doing and if they inspect and tell you that there is no activity, then I'm guessing that they are telling the truth about it. The treatment they did sounds like overkill to me, but that definitely should do the job. With regard to the bait stations, this is the first time I have heard of a case where the bait stations failed to prevent an infestation. They are generally very effective. That being said, bait stations are not necessary if you do the treatment in my video every year. The idea behind bait stations is that you are trying to attract the termites to the bait before they attack the house. The idea behind treating with BioAdvanced granules or trenching the house is you place a barrier around the house that the termites must pass through when they attack the building. So, placing the barrier around the house is a sure thing, while the bait stations are relying on the termites to find them and bring the bait back to the colony to share with the other termites. Again, I have never seen the bait stations fail, but in theory it is possible for the termites to miss the bait stations and go directly to the building. You said that the company treated the soil around the house. If they trenched, then this should be good for five to ten years and there would be no way that subterranean termites can survive that treatment. So, if you have both a barrier treatment and you are baiting, it's really overkill. There is no way subterranean termites can get through that kind of treatment. Using the BioAdvanced granules every year will do the same job, but I always tell folks that if you can afford to hire a pro, then why not? It's like mowing your lawn. Why do it yourself if you can afford to pay someone to do it for you? I only did the video because so many people cannot afford the kind of money the pros charge. I know I can't. The truth is though that I am now 71 years old and I would love to hire a pro to do my pest control, but my wife and I decided that we would rather do things like eat. Lol. Anyway, I think you have this thing licked. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching. Be well my friend.

    Hello, THANK YOU for taking the time and effort to do this video AND even more for taking the time to reply to everyone's questions! I learned a lot from the video and the answers you posted in the comments :-) I did try to find the answer to my questions by reading some of the comments - and I'm sure you have been asked this but with nearly 4,000 comments I didn't easliy see it. My question is how do you treat a house that has a deck area when it is adjacent to the house? My neighbor has a 20x24 foot deck and one side is directly against the garage and the other the house. The deck is less than 2 feet off the ground. The boards on the deck do not have any gaps that you could sprinkle the granules in - like you suggested for the expansion gaps. Thanks for your time.
    Second question: If a house had termites 2 years ago and the house was treated.... by those guys who charge 600 bucks :-) would this method work at keeping the termites from coming back? Or because the termites already 'crossed' into the house should something else be done too?

After watching this video, you should be able to identify the species. Just get back to me after you watch it and let me know what you found out. At that point, I can tell you exactly what you need to do. Let me know if you have any problems identifying the species, but I do not think that you will. It is much easier than you may imagine. Also, please tell me where you live. Location matters.
      It would be helpful to see photos of the deck and all sides of the building from the building to the property line. You can send photos to guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. Please note that I will be out of town for a couple of weeks starting on Monday, so I may not be able to get back to you until I return. It is termite swarming season right now, so I am getting a lot of termite questions. I always answer all questions, so I am a bit backed up right now. I want to answer as many as I can before I leave. I promise that I will get caught up when I return, and I will read and answer your email. I have not taken a vacation in 13 years and my wife explained that it's time. I suppose it's a reasonable request. Don't worry. After I look at the photos and you tell me what you think the species is, I will do my very best to give you the best treatment plan possible.

      The product is safe for pets. Just keep them inside while you are applying it and watering it in. This will not affect the fruit trees unless you literally put it directly on the roots. Most people can trench an entire house in one day, but you can take up to a month to get it done, and you can literally do just 10 feet at a time. Also, keep in mind that the granules do not work for drywood termites or Formosan termites. If you are unclear about the species, then please watch my video on how to identify termite species.
      Make sure that you buy the correct granules. You need the ones that have imidacloprid as the active ingredient. A lot of the Home Depot and Lowes stores no longer sell the correct granules, but you can get them from Amazon. I will give you a link to them.
      Mobile homes are actually pier homes in most cases. The preferred method to treat a house that is on piers is to treat each individual pier as if it were its own foundation. That means, if you use the granules, then you need to apply them around every pier, and water them in. If you are trenching, then you would trench around each pier. Of course, the problem with many pier homes is that they were built so close to the ground in some places that you cannot get under there to treat some of the piers. When you run into that situation, then you need to treat around the piers that you can reach, and then you need to treat around the perimeter of the entire building as well. It is important to understand that subterranean termites colonize in the ground and never in your house. If you have a pier home, then that usually means you have dirt under it. Therefore, it is possible for the termites to colonize directly under the house. That is why we like to treat around each pier. Subterranean termites always return to the colony fairly often to obtain the moisture they need to survive and to feed the other termites in the colony. If you treat around each pier, then it doesn't matter if the colony is directly under the house or not, because they will need to encounter the termiticide on their way to and from the food source. If you cannot treat around one or more of the piers, then that may present the termites with an opportunity to make their way into your house by exploiting the fact that a particular pier, or piers, we're not treated. So, the best you can do is treat the ones that you can treat and then treat around the perimeter as well, hoping that the colony is outside the footprint of the house. If you can see a pier, but you cannot access it, you can shoot a pesticide onto the pier by using a hose end sprayer. Please watch my video on how to treat your yard with a hose end sprayer. Just use the sprayer that I recommend in the video and mix the pesticide as I recommend in the video. Put the sprayer into stream mode and just shoot it onto the piers about every 60 days. This will not treat an existing infestation, but it will prevent new termites from taking that root of entry. While you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to spray the other piers as well, even if you treated them with granules or trenching.

    Great video! Just the thing I need for both carpenter ants and termites. Will get some of these pellets and apply asap. Thanks!

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very common to have both carpenter ants and termites at the same time. That is because carpenter ants like to eat termites. Not only that, the termites do a lot of the work for the carpenter ants, so not only are they a great food source, they also do a lot of the excavating of the wood. That saves the carpenter ants a lot of time. Unfortunately, the granules only work for termites. The carpenter ants require a different treatment. I will give you a video on how to get rid of the carpenter ants. Keep in mind that for the granules to work you need to have dirt around most of the house and that dirt needs to be porous enough to allow water to seep into the ground fairly quickly. Trenching is a lot more work, but it only costs about $100 to do an average size home, and it lasts 5 to 10 years. Most people can trench an entire house in one day, but you can take up to a month to get it done, and you can literally do just 10 feet at a time.

      @@GuysPestSolutions Thanks much for the complete comment on these pests. They can be a real pain in the neck to deal with and eradicate.
      We do have porous soil here, as much of it is made from forest debris, such as twigs and fir needles. I have used a hose in a few places near our
      home and the water soaks in right away. Trenching would be difficult here as we also have a lot of rock, probably from an old river bottom. It is
      a major effort to dig holes here because of this. At least the rocks are separated by enough porous dirt that is does not hold water for long. I
      got the granules and will be applying them soon. Also got some spray from the same company that kills both carpenter ants and termites on
      contact.

      @@edb3877 You do not want to use the spray. You should never use a quick kill pesticide on carpenter ants or termites. Very bad idea. So, just stick with the granules for the termites. Please watch my video on how to treat carpenter ants. Be well my friend.

      It also helps to shoot some fipronil foam into the damaged areas. Just drill small holes into the damaged areas and shoot in the foam for about five seconds. The foam will expand to about 30 times its size and it will get into all the voids made by the termites. You don't need to do this with subterranean termites, but it greatly speeds up the process. So, if you have floor damage, then shooting some foam in there will definitely ruin their afternoon. You still need to do the granules, because you want to be sure to get them all, but hitting them right where they are shortens the process by a factor of about 50 percent and the foam only costs about $29 a can and one can is all you should need. I will place a link below for it. Normally the granules take between four to eight weeks to be fully effective and the foam will cut that down to two to four weeks. The reason it takes so long is that the granules need to melt and then leach into the ground in order to work and then it's a slow kill process. You don't want to kill these guys too fast because you want them to take the pesticide back to the colony, which is always in the ground, and then share it with the other termites. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Finally, you should know that, if you have dry wood termites, then most of your neighbors have them as well. We are in northern Illinois. We have an end unit of a 6-unit townhouse row, all brick with a concrete foundation. This spring we found subterranean termites swarming out of a window frame on the first floor and subsequently found two termite tunnels in the basement. The tunnels go from where the wall and the floor join and up the wall. Had two companies give us treatment plans that were pretty similar: liquid treatment around the whole townhouse building. we have cement stoops in the front, and I guess that's why they didn't offer to do sentricon. Both companies refused to do anything unless it's the whole building.
    Now, we can't get everyone in the building on board. No one else seems to have the termite problem, the association rules are very lax. we are pretty much like owners of separate units.
    Based on this and on the fact that taken that we have cement foundations and not much wood in the building structure, we decided to go ahead and self-treat just own unit. We plan to do the pellet treatment that Guy recommends, then install some baits, remove the tunnels, and spray around the areas where the termites entered through cracks. Patch up the cracks. Try to do everything within a couple of days.
    Should we actually remove the tunnels?
    I am a little concerned about having berry plants around my house, but I think the closest is about 10' away. Would it be safe to eat berries from that plant?
    Also, any recommendations on the products to apply indoors? We are worried about toxicity especially since the tunnels are pretty close to the HVAC system.
    Thanks a lot for your info and your help!

      Thank you for sharing all this information. The situation you have is very common with townhomes. The good news is that the species of termites that you have there are actually pretty slow eaters, so it takes them a while to do any significant damage. Since the other owners will not cooperate, then you need to rely on spot treating. That is why the very last thing you ever want to do is to remove those mud tubes. We need those mud tubes so that we can have a delivery system to bring the termiticide to the termite colony. If we treat the mud tubes correctly, the termites that travel through those mud tubes will bring this material back to the colony and share it with the other termites. If you remove those mud tubes, then you will take away one of the main lines of defense. Please let me know if the mud tubes are still intact. If so, then I will explain how to do the spot treatment on them. Don't worry. This treatment is perfectly safe.
      Please tell me more about the basement floor. Is this a concrete floor, and is there any floor covering on it such as carpet or tile?
      Can you send me photos of the outside of the townhome so that I can see the sides of the building that you own. I need to see everything from the sides of the house to the property line. Also, it would be helpful to see photos of those mud tubes. You can send photos to guyspestsolutions@gmail.com. When you send the email, please remind me of the situation. I receive a lot of email and a lot of it is about termites this time of year because it is swarming season. Also, please give me your TH-cam name.
      Since you have mud tubes on the inside of the foundation, then granules may not be your best option. I will let you know what I think after I see the photos of the outside and photos of the mud tubes. My guess is though that you are going to need to trench the exterior walls.
      I usually do not recommend baiting for termites, but you may have an exception here. The thing is though that you need to do it correctly. When you email, I would be happy to explain exactly how you need to do the baiting for it to be effective.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

      I suppose it would depend upon how hard it is raining. If it is raining really hard, then you are probably better off waiting for a drier day. You don't want the granules washed away, before they can leach into the ground. However, if it's only a light rain, then that may actually be of assistance. I would still water them in though.
      If the weed barrier that you have under the mulch will allow water to pass through it, then you should be okay if you just apply the granules over the top of everything. However, if you have the kind of barrier that prevents water from getting through, then you would need to pull it back to apply to granules.
      Keep in mind that for the granules to work you need to have dirt around most of the house and that dirt needs to be porous enough to allow water to seep into the ground fairly quickly. Thank you for informative video! I currently pay about $280 a year for sentricon and in two stations near back (cooler ground w little sun) area near the AC unit and water(sprinkler heads)...they found termites again eating the sentricon food. They say I dont need to do anything more unless see termites inside house?...because sentricon will kill termites effectively. I haven't seen any 'swarms' or mud lines indicating activity anywhere so maybe they are correct ?
    To be on the safe side, as you say the Bayer product is definitely worth also using as its very inexpensive and sounds to be very effective, if used every year...and as you say its WAY less expensive than almost $300 a year for sentricon. Very happy to hear there is actually something in this world that 'works' and is cheap yaaa :)

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are very welcome. Your pest controller is correct that the Sentricon system will take out those termites, but you are also correct that it is way too expensive. The granules work just as well. If you are really concerned about termites, and you actually want to keep an eye on them, you can install monitoring stations around your house that are very similar to what your pest controller is doing. You can buy enough of them for your entire house for under $300, or you can make enough of them yourself out of disposable water bottles for under $25. What I do, is I put the granules around my house every year, but I also have the homemade monitor stations around the house as well. The termites will almost always attack the monitoring stations first because they are three or four feet from the house and termites generally go after the first food they come to. There is a little orange dot on the top of the stations. When the dot disappears, then you have termites. Even though the granules are still protecting you, you can go ahead and kill off the entire termite colony before they get anywhere near your home, which is what the Sentricon system does. So now you have a $25 system that is protecting you, and you have the granules that are also protecting you. Therefore, the termites will not stand a chance. The granules alone should do the job for you, but if you would like the added protection of the monitoring stations, and you would like to make them yourself, then watch my video on how to do that. I will give you a link below. Be well my friend.

    If you have a concrete slab foundation, termites can only atack your house by building and using tunnels going up the foundation outside or coming through plumbing openings inside. To me the best way to prevent and get rid of them is to use termite stakes sold in big box stores. The stakes kill termites when they eat them by preventing their bodies from making chitin, but does not kill them quickly or repel them like most pesticides. Follow the directions on the box about where to place the sticks or find the tunnels, knock them down and put sticks in their place. Check your yard for boards or tree limbs and roots termites are eating and replace them as well. I read an interesting article about the scientist that developed this method. He had been doing experiments on a large colony near his house. When he put out the stakes, he realized he had killed the whole colony and had to find another to experiment on.
