@@jamesculnan3144 She sure does make it look easy! I commend to you her cut on Alison Brown's new On Banjo recording. It's called Sweet Sixteenths. Another little piece of genius - from both of them.
@@oscarfhills Thanks -- it's a very nice track -- even has a kind of delicate quality. I listen to a lot of classical music, especially from the baroque era . . . I wrote a comment elsewhere saying that maybe J.S. Bach himself would have appreciated things that Sierra Hull does on the mandolin (and of course she has performed some Bach, and quite nicely.) Anyway, I haven't listened to THAT much bluegrass -- have been wading into it recently -- but I think the level of musical sophistication and virtuosity is really remarkable. I hope the music performed by people like Sierra Hull will become widely appreciated, beyond just the bluegrass audience. It deserves (and rewards) the attention . . . and it puts a smile on your face, or touches your heart.
@@oscarfhills Have you seen this video, from about five years ago?th-cam.com/video/H2em4c2uwdc/w-d-xo.html She plays a tune that is based on -- are you ready for this?? -- Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. The playing is brilliant, of course, and the interview also gives you a chance to experience what an utterly charming and sincere person she is, as well. (In case that link doesn't transmit, it's Sierra Hull on Radio 91 KRCB.) I don't want to get TOO carried away, but what has humanity done to deserve this wonderful musician and person? I guess we're not all bad . . .
What a beautiful rendition of that great old gospel song. It's lyrics are just as relevant in today's world as they were when Mr Mayfield wrote the song. We all need to hear those lyrics and take them to heart thank you Sierra well done
So sorry, this comment 👆 was intended for Beane's cover of New York, New York! Ruddy YT autoplay moving too fast for my ancient fingers. 😲😂 I've always *loved* 'PGR' and Sierra Hull's cover is A.MA.ZING! 😍
I seriously agree that Sierra should put out a blues and soul based album. She obviously has a feel for the music; in addition to this video, Sierra's You Tube performances of Doc Watson's "Walk On Boy", Tony Rice's "Church Street Blues" (both accompanied by her magical guitar playing) and Del McCoury's "I Feel The Blues Moving In" demonstrate Sierra's virtuosity and ability to master R&B based styles of music. I am sure she could carry her bluegrass fans with her if she were to record these and other tunes on an album, and it would also be likely to broaden her fan base. Samantha Fish has crossed over between Blues, Country, Soul and Rock music on different albums; demonstrating that there is no reason why such talented musicians need to restrict themselves to recording only one particular genre of music.
Hello, and thanks for watching/listening. The engineer, John Escobar, reports this about the mics: The vocal mic is an Extinct - Berserker, and the mandolin mic is an Extinct -Bm9. Extinct is a small boutique company in England; the vocal mic is a particularly small batch of only 8 units made.
Sierra, you prove every day that the mandolin can play every genre of music. I think you make it sound great in this soulful song. I do have one question about your instrument if you don't mind. Is your Gibson F style mandolin slightly larger than most F style mandolins?
I'm pretty sure Sierra's Gibson mandolin is the "normal" size for an F style instrument. The reason it looks slightly larger is that Sierra is what my wife would describe as "petite." Watch the video of her warming up with Chris Thile at Telluride. Thile is 5'9" tall and he can look right over her head! Yet musically, I think Sierra Hull towers over Thile! No offense Chris.....
Well done, been listening the heck out Sara Niemietz's version of this for months. but the Mandolin is Not my favorite instrument Too tinney for my Tinnitus laiden ears . Still.. YOU SURE blue grassed the heck out it 🤠👍 still learning it (I'm slow) Jamming along in Alberta🙏❣
Sierra Hull is probably the greatest acoustic musician of our times. The Jerry Reed of her generation - a genius.
Her solo playing in this video is just ridiculous. And then she just smiles, quite sweetly . . .

Well said, Oscar!

So glad you loved it!
She lets the song tell the story.
That instrumental break is fantastic.
What a joy! Marvelous skill, creativity, oh so sweet, and beautiful besides. And a great voice!
We don't hear enough of your beautiful voice!! 🎉
Absolutely brilliant. Words are pointless. ❤
Great song selection and performance for and by a super talent...
Even if I were completely deaf just seeing her beautiful smile brightens my day. Music is great too!
Love how Sierra covers many classics and lights them up/reignites through her great and soulful performances...
Truly spectacular!
Una meraviglia!!
A great session. Sierras playing is so smooth. I like 😊
Sublime playing, singing, and song choice. We need more healing music. Thank you, Sierra. You are one badass babe.
NOW you're talkin'!!! What a wonderful treatment of a great song. Mandolin sales about to explode!

So beautiful and talented
You are my hero❤
So much joy.
Well said
Beautiful. ❤️
Chills
She never fails to amaze me.
Stunning.
د
This was great hearing you do something from another genre. It would be great to hear more soul, r &b, and gospel music covers…!
Astonishing talent.
Never thought this was possible on a Mandolin.
Too good
💙
Check out her full band version- especially the Grey Fox recording with Jerry Douglas. So much musicality.
Curtis!
I've been ready🤠
fantastic
Brilliant.
Never been a fan of this song...until now! That was a beautiful version, Beane!

Black and White works good too!
Nicely done
Maybe Sierra is the one to pull the mandolin into entirely new genres of music.
Wow
Think i just fell in love with. . . .
👏👏👏
That's some nice pickin, and with a beautiful smile and voice.
What kind of strings does Sierra use?
This is lovely! What ribbon mics are used to record?

I’ve played Sierra’s mandolin- it is indeed just standard size. She is tiny overall for sure. And that’s coming from a 5’5” male.

Glad you're listening ... and learning!! That's part of the fun of music 🎉
Haha, Sierra, I thought you hit up Salt Lick BBQ when you were in Austin. Oh Well!
Shes the Jimi Hendrix of mando.
I’m in a trance. Your a goddess
Wow! Who is this? Full orchestra versions are no better than this version!?
