You are a hero. I love your mature presentation - no goofy expressions or cringeworthy emoticons pasted everywhere - and how humble you are in your descriptions of your craft. Thank you so much.
This is great stuff. Your tutorials are so calm and professional, I feel like I'm watching a David Attenborough documentary. :-D Straight to the point and well thought out!
Hehe, thanks! You're not the first to make the David Attenborough comparison 😂 I'm definitely honoured though! The Attenborough of Ableton 🤣 More coming soon I hope! 🙌🏻
Ich verstehe zwar nur schlecht Englisch, aber ich liebe die Tutorials von ELPHNT. Eine sehr professionelle und tolle Art der Präsentation, und großartige Inspirationen. Bitte mehr davon.
Just what i needed right now! I suffer with CFS so i hit blocks where i really struggle to come up with ideas and I was looking for a way to explore theory and different keys while coming up with ideas atst but in a really simple way and this nails it. I'd love to see more on creating moods and emotion through the choice of keys and scales and how you take this further in the composition process but i am gonna watch your masterclasses if it's covered there. Cheers!
Absolutely loved your workshop in Cape Town the other week (thanks for the prize!!) and was on the hunt for some reference to your subject of Embracing Random. HERE IT IS!!! More than chuffed. THNK YU.
very very nice technique. im a producer and an educator on music production, and i really apreciate the way you express this idea. thank you! subscribed!
I don't know about other DAWs but I think Live is already very good for things like this. Follow Actions and Dummy Clips are amazing for generative stuff (see Part 2 of this video), and obviously things like this technique are possible because of the routing system. MaxForLive also has some incredible options for generative stuff - there are some crazy sequencers and then also things like the LFO, Envelope Follower and Shaper devices too.
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing. There's a lot of fun to be had here. Start throwing arpeggiators and M4L chord generators in the mix it can get really interesting.
Try plugging random velocity into a MIDI Effect Rack with velocity chains - I had C major and A major as two chains with equal chance, fed with 7th chords, and I love what I'm hearing. Just having the computer do chord borrowing for me :)
mxncrvlmnnts Look into MIDI Effect Racks and Velocity-based chaining. Combined with the “Velocity” MIDI effect, with “Random” set to max, it should be fairly obvious from there. Just put different scales in different chains (or whatever you want, actually.)
Thanks so much for the great content, I regularly re-watch your videos for inspiration and ideas and for a refresher. The addition of free templates is incredibly generous. Thanks!
It would be great to do this with drums too and then have an LFO controlling the global randomness and "intensity"(perhaps note density, more or less notes), and/or assign it to a knob rather than an LFO, and also have knobs for these parameters for individual tracks in the song. That way you can control the general flow of the track live.
Have you tried routing the triggers to a drum track instead of an instrument track? 😉 Try routing individual trigger tracks though, as opposed to the bus track. You might be able to set up what you're looking for.
I would love to see more info on the follow actions and dummy chords. I see them in the template but it would be great to understand how it actually works.
Cool! I thought some people might wanna know that sort of thing - I'll definitely be doing a follow up tutorial in a little while 😊 Hit the Subscribe button and turn on Notifications if you want to hear about it 😀 Or you could join my newsletter if you like: elphnt.co.za/mailing-list/ I'll also try to remember to reply to this comment when I post the new video 🤓
VERY usefull, thank you. I'm not a musician or have any background in it. Im producing techno and right now im at a point that the building blocks are good in my track but i miss that melodie too lift it up. Would like to see you make some raw melodie material!
nice tutorial especially the bit with random, chord and scale all it one... Seems a bit complex in terms of triggering all this though. The same effect can be achieved with hitting literally any note on a keyboard at that point. Although having this as a session on the ready I would imagine be great.
You're definitely not wrong there, although I was going for getting the computer to do as much of the work as possible 😉 Where's the fun in actually pressing any keys when you can just sit back and watch music appear before your eyes? 😂
This is really great mate. Thank you for all your videos and tools all the ones I've seen have proved incredibly helpful. I was just wondering if something similar could be done but for generating drum patterns, I struggle with them and often find myself having to use preset grooves or midi clips and modifying them to get my drum beats...
Thanks for the compliments! 🙏🏻 And yes, it will definitely work for drums. Try using pretty much the same technique as above but instead route the MIDI to a track with a Drum Rack. You might just need to refine the note ranges so that it triggers whatever drums you've got set up, but it will definitely work. You probably also won't need any of the MIDI effects like Chord and Scale 'cause they won't be as useful with drums, though you can get some interesting results. The key for generating rhythms would be the unsync'd / polyrhythmic trigger loops. I hope that makes sense.
Thanks! If you're interested you can download some ELPHNT wallpapers for free at elphnt.co.za/art. I've got it on my agenda to make some merch too; stickers, t-shirts, etc.
Ty Tom thats an amazing video, not exactly what i was searching but opening a lot of ideas... was looking for a technique to create variations from an existing pattern i made... ty by advanced if u have any tips on that i will definitively go and check our website to learn more see u

Haha, exactly the thing I'm trying to avoid! So good to hear that it comes across that way 🤓

Possibly the best Ableton video I've seen!! I never thought of doing this to help creating chords ♥️♥️
This is maybe the second video that i'm whatching in Your channel and after years and years of tutorial on TH-cam, and I can tell you that you win!
Ich verstehe zwar nur schlecht Englisch, aber ich liebe die Tutorials von ELPHNT. Eine sehr professionelle und tolle Art der Präsentation, und großartige Inspirationen. Bitte mehr davon.
This is the most amazing TH-cam video I ever seen.. great work man.
This is one of the most ingenious approaches I have ever seen, thank you for sharing how this is accomplished!
Just what i needed right now! I suffer with CFS so i hit blocks where i really struggle to come up with ideas and I was looking for a way to explore theory and different keys while coming up with ideas atst but in a really simple way and this nails it. Wow. Clever, useful and funny. With this, you can make a 24h music for a waiting room, always different 😀

I'm so glad I found this channel! Top tier content!
Congrats on 10K - Great video, my friend...off to watch part 2!
Good job. Think this is where Live and other DAWs can evolve by adding generative elements like this.

It just got even easier with the newest version; Abelton 11. :)
Thanks for sharing this awesome technique. Looks like a fun way to avoid creative block. I’m looking forward to part two!
This is a fantastic tutorial! Community knowledge at its very best. Thankyou
Great tutorial, thanks for sharing. There's a lot of fun to be had here. Start throwing arpeggiators and M4L chord generators in the mix it can get really interesting.

Can you explain how to do that? Sounds like a really interesting idea !
