    It's very nice to see that you guys keep the Finnish culture alive there in America. And you look like Finns too!

      We are trying our hardest to keep the culture alive! I was told when I visited Finland that I looked very Finnish :) Nice to blend in!

    Hyvin mielenkiintoista :) I think this existence of Finnish culture in some parts of the US isn't really known back here. Nice video!

      In 1.14 there is named the inventor "Oscar Wirkkala". I lived in "Virkkala", Finland for 20 years. Our late president Mannerheim had a mansion in Virkkala back in the early 1900s and from our town people left to the US. Maybe there's a correlation between these two?

    Hello Kristin. How about Wirkkala family in Naselle are they still live there. I remember one of them, his name was Albert.
    He was a lay preacher. He's visiting my home village here in Finland somewhere between 1974-1980 I thought.
    in video at 4.42 I can see some items related to logging industry. Wirkkala design. Albert and his brothers were involved
    that business.

      @KristinOjaniemi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hei! I believe there are Wirkkala family members still in the Naselle area. There were a lot of exhibits that did mention the family and their contributions to the logging industry there. I have plans for more stories to tell - theirs would be a good one :)

  • @virvalehmusvuori1469

    The pole with strings the girls were dancing around is a swedish tradition though.... It’s also strange when people cant pronounce their lastnames...smh, this isnt true finnish culture. You cant speak the language, you’ve probably never been to finland, you are not culturally finnish etc. If you have a finnish relative or a drop of finnish blood in you, it doesnt make you suomalainen

    • @KristinOjaniemi
      @KristinOjaniemi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I'm sorry Virva that my video gave you so many negative feelings. This is Finnish-American culture and how these people choose to express it. Personally no, I cannot speak the language but do want to learn someday. There are classes near me. And yes, my last name has been "Americanized". I HAVE been to Finland, and was treated warmly by those who hosted me, especially those who were distant relatives. All of my great-grandparents immigrated here from various parts of Finland, so I do have more than a drop of Finnish blood in me. If you go to my website, the purpose of this, and my other videos is to learn more about the Finnish and Finnish-American culture.

      @Virva Lehmusvuori why are you like this? These people are Americans but they have Finnish heritage. Of course the culture gets more or less Americanized but they are proud of their roots and try to keep the traditions alive, probably more than most of us Finns in Finland (we take it just for granted).

      Virva Lehmusvuori That was such a petty and dumb comment. I’m sure most of us Finns think it is wonderful how they respect their heritage and preserve the traditions.
      I noticed the Swedish dance too, but knowing how many Finnish traditions actually originated in Sweden and how much mixing there has been between the cultures it is hardly worth noting.
      Really well made video of festival I would have loved see on location, but so few views. Somehow TH-cam decided to recommend it now.
