    Mothering, homeschooling, and taking care of a home is most definitely a job. Glad y'all brought that to light. It's so easy to feel like we need to be doing more and we really do SO much. Be proud of your job, it's an accomplishment 👏

    • @OldVirginia8

      Totally agree. The bulk of the homeschooling and home maintenance falls on my wife and it is a full time job!

      Running a home? You mean running a giant homestead. Exponentially more work. And not to forget running this YT channel. I don’t know how she has enough hours in the day!

      I also think after watching these videos and researching a bit that the fact that he also has a high paying job really helps them homestead at such a high quality of life with the nice appliances and tools etc. So impressed by this family

    When our kids were little I tried to always have a list on the fridge of extra jobs and what they paid. The more I disliked the job the more I paid, lol. It was quite successful because when they wanted to buy something they had control. I had a longterm goal of trying to raise them to know they could achieve their own goals and depend on themselves.

      @ihateleftistliars4840 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now that was a solid way to raise them!!
      I have simple things like wash your plates, clean your room and mow the yard etc he will do, period..
      If my son wants cash, then he can do some harder stuff like weeding the beds or moving dirt etc..
      I LOVE THE GOOD ATTITUDE THESE KIDS HAVE OVER ALL

    Thank you for discussing your mental health! Sometimes the condition of my garden depends on how active my depression is, and it's kind of a cycle of trying to keep it going when those phases arise. I appreciate the advice to treat it like therapy.

    My husband and I met at BYUI as well where I was born and raised. We own a home in Rexburg and are actively searching for a home and land to homestead! Finding it has been much harder than we thought considering the market and world events. We are continually learning so much from your family. Thank you! We are anxious to put our knowledge to good use.

  • @osg124
    @osg124 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You're LDS that's awesome! I went to BYUI that's actually where my interest in homesteading perked up. I came from Portland and Rexburg was a culture shock...but in the best way possible! When you started the video my eyes went to the scriptures in the bookshelf and I was like...I've only seen one religion with scriptures like that 🤪

    Thank you both so much for sharing your spiritual beliefs. I’m not a member but my husband grew up in the church. There are so many aspects of the teachings regarding healthy and responsible living that resonate with me. I often tell him they may have left but he still ended up with a Mormon wife! ☺️ I just love your sweet family, and so admire your healthy way of living and being good stewards of the earth. God bless you and your family! 💜

    My God, I wish every parent was parenting like you both are. Having kids do chores around the home seems to be (almost) from a bygone era with a lot of parents nowadays! And paying them to do 'work' around the farm not only teaches them discipline (something sorely missing in the majority of the younger generation, too many of whom seem to feel, and act, self-entitled), but new skills, problem-solving and responsibility with money (i.e. they quickly learn that money does not grow on trees!). Well done to both of you. And by the way... neither of you look old enough to have a 15 year old! 😀

  • @lynicefirey5008

    I feel like every time you talk about yourself I find more and more similarities! Thank you for sharing this. I am currently working full time with two very young boys, and one of the things that helps me if I'm feeling anxious about my garden (as I do not have time to keep it like I'd like to, which creates anxiety about it, and decreases the fulfillment I get from it, and turns into a vicious cycle of avoidance and increasing anxiety) is remind myself something Jessica sowards said, imperfect gardens feed people too. It helps me focus on my goals instead of the weeds that I wish I would have dealt with. Making goals really helps me too!

  • @4beefarm265
    @4beefarm265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree, gardening has brought me closer to God and helps me work through my anxiety. Y’all are so impressive and definitely goals. Homesteading/farming and being self sufficient as much as possible is what my heart longs for. We live on a little over an acre in central Arkansas, small but doable. And we’re making it happen. Thanks for sharing 💚🌱 also! I’m super interested in you sharing more books!

    I don't know if I mentioned to you that I made my own personal playlist of all of your videos in the order that they were made ❤️ This one is definitely being added! I enjoy all of you so much. You bring me joy and happiness. As you were talking I started wondering if, for Becky, it would be so wonderful to be able to add a greenhouse to the side of the house for her winter gardening. You know, like one of those glass greenhouses. That would help so much with her depression. Becky, I enjoy your blog so much. You two would think I'm nuts on how much time I spend reading about you and your homestead. I follow the blog, TH-cam (obviously) and your IG account 😁 I am very disabled so the comfort of being able to be absorbed into the world of homesteading brings me so much joy. You can make a small scale combine. We have one for threshing and testing a small amount of grain when we don't want to take the combine out, its a box thats about 2 x 1.5 x 1.5 feet. It connects to a car battery, has an electric motor that rotates a plastic blade and a fan at the bottom to blow the chaff. You just need a large pipe that you can place the wheat heads in that slopes downward and at the bottom is a plastic dowel that spins and threshes the wheat. (dont use something sharp, use something blunt like a 1/4 in. pvc pipe) The threshed material then falls down past a fan that will blow out the light chaff, the heavy material falls into a collection bin. (An electric motor powers the thresher and the fan. If there are still large bits of the head left you just re-thresh it. It makes a surprisingly clean sample, just don't stick the entire plant in, just the heads. It would take a while to do an acre but your kids would love it. I threshed so much with it as a kid.
    Cam could easily build something like this it has 2 main components. A thresher, and a separator...that's it because you would be collecting the wheat by hand.
    Some grains you could practically grow that may be useful to you are a hard red wheat for making bread flour, Durum for making pasta flour, mustard for well....mustard, Flax for its high fiber content and you can bail flax straw because its basically rope, Flax straw makes for good home insulation and can be burned too. You can also bail wheat straw for animal bedding.

    I think you could probably hire someone to harvest your grains. If you find a seed distributor near you, they often have tiny combines to clear their test plots. You may be able to pay a small fee for them to clear a small field for you.
    I love what you are doing for your family. We have a tiny city yard. Like 1/12 of an acre! I plan to grow as much as I can here, and some at my parent’s land about 45 minutes away. I think we will do root vegetables there. I’ve just started pressure canning, which is super fun. I just find the noise of the canner weights exhausting. Still worth it!

    I live in the desert, the possibility of owning a farm is zero. Our vegetables are bought from the supermarket which were imported from different countries , but I somehow find this channel fascinating. I don't have a use for canning or knowing about the variety of pumpkins but here I am utterly hooked on things I have no use of.

    That’s a beautiful painting!! You’re very talented. I’d love a book video! I’ve been debating on getting into homesteading and am always up for other resources.

      Also, a video about books you use with your kids about homesteading and gardening would be awesome as well. Love to you and your family!

    Loved the video! Loved the q and A. I’ve been wondering for awhile about if Cam had a job or just worked on the homestead. Way to live your dreams! I love it. You definitely inspire me to start a garden…. Maybe….

    I'm a new subscriber and my husband and I just moved onto 50 acres in western Washington state. We're slowly starting a homestead. First things first, my garden. We do plan on adding animals. I have to say that you, Becky, are an incredible artist! That painting is amazing!

    I thank you for your openness and honesty. One thing I do to keep busy in the winter is I either freeze the fruit or steam juice it and make my jellies and jams in the winter when it isn’t as busy but gives me something to do. I also have an outdoor kitchen or summer kitchen. It is covered and we have a 12 foot restaurant stainless steel counter top with a gas stove and a 3 burner propane stove. I can store my pots and canners in the bottom of the counter.
