Survivorman | Beyond Survival | Season 1 | Episode 6 | The Inuit of the High Arctic | Les Stroud

  • Stroud journeys to the top of Baffin Island in rural Nunavut, Canada: the arctic. He returns to visit the small Inuit community called Pond Inlet. The integration of modern technologies has ensured cultural and physical survival in an environment where temperatures can drop below -40c. But today, Pond Inlet faces its greatest challenge: climate change. Gone are the dogsleds, Stroud witnesses the marriage of Western technology and indigenous knowledge in the face of rapid economic and cultural change as the ice slowly recedes from the North.
With award winning, never before seen ceremonial and survival footage, Les Stroud crafted this stunningly beautiful and compelling series about connecting to the earth through survival and ancient ceremonies with indigenous cultures around the planet.

I've been a fan of Survivorman for over a decade now but I am just now seeing this series as you release it to youtube. Im actually enjoying this series much more than I have enjoyed survivorman, and thats a damn high bar to reach.

aww this one is not nearly long enough. I feel like I could watch an entire series about the Inuit. The artic region just seems both magical and impossible to me. So barren, yet they somehow make it work. I wish we got to see more of village/town life.

    • @NomadAlly

Yeah. Seems like almost all of them could’ve been longer. This one felt especially short as well.

I agree, I would’ve especially loved to see some of their more spiritual aspects like Les gets into with the other groups in this series. Still a great episode though, as a northeasterner myself (though nowhere near the Arctic) this one was especially cool!

I spent 5 weeks in the Kitikmeot Nunavut during what looks like the same time of year as you visited Pond Inlet. Can't wait to go back. Its hard to describe the feeling of walking out onto the frozen ocean, seeing massive cracks in the ice. Inuit are some real survivors couple guys got lost in a storm, went the wrong way and ended up running out of fuel and were stuck in the wilderness for a week while they were searched for. Met them a few days after they got home and their faces were very sunburnt but they survived and it was just another day to them. I could comment so much here, thanks for being an unproblematic king Les you've been a great Canadian icon.

What amazes me is how naturally Les is able to join in with all these drastically different, ancient cultures, and have it always somehow feel genuine and not artificial or forced. You can sense the deep respect he has and the eagerness to learn. There is no exploitation going on here and he never does anything for shock value or for dramatization. You can really see that he wants to experience their culture and clearly they sense that as well.

SO amazing watching them construct the igloo! What a work of art, but pragmatic and precise art. I wonder how the early Inuit knew that a dome shape would work so well and be superior, engineering wise, to a square or rectangular shape.

Well I honestly learned something today I would've never believed if someone told me but I got to see it truthfully on here and that how Caribou actually have warble fly larva just as deer do here in N.C but people WILL NOT eat the meat if so. I do but people I know will not touch it. To me just as these men know they are only in the skin membrane not the meat it self. Awesome people the Inuit.

Les , This was an amazing hunt. 3 Caribou, 11 char and 1 seal. Great hunt.
Growing up on Maui in the 60s ,I learned the ways of Hawaiian hunters.our team was strong.Surrounding many big schools of Akulie ( Spanish Makeral). Hunt pig, and became expert Throw net fisherman.
These skills are also on the tipping point. I was fortunate that the Hawaiian people took me in and taught me. A life well lived.

This, along with many other episodes, should be sent into space if we ever decide to send some more info about ourselves out into the cosmos, like how we did with the golden disc on Voyager 1. These videos are a very good representations of humans in the wild, even if the humans themselves aren't wild anymore or untouched by the metal hands of civilization.

You’d think they would leave a large marker that freezes into the side of the hole so you know where to dig. You’d also think they’d leave a rope from 1 hole to the other so when the next team turns up you just have to dig the holes and drag the net through.
