- The 116 series, unveiled in 1972, was the first Mercedes-Benz luxury saloon to bear the S-Class name. The new model series featured numerous innovations and defined the future look of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car. The new designation went hand in hand with a whole bundle of innovations that set new standards in respect of safety and comfort. The comprehensive safety concept included a collision-proof fuel tank, a four-spoke safety steering wheel, dirt-deflecting side windows, larger headlamps, distinctive turn signal lamps and dirt-deflecting ribbed rear lamps. 1977 saw the dawn of the diesel age in the premium class with the 300 SD, although this was initially just in the North American markets. The luxury diesel was also the first series production car with a turbo-diesel engine. From 1978, the S-Class was the first series production vehicle to be fitted with ABS (anti-lock braking system), which ensured that the vehicle would respond fully to the driver’s steering action even in an emergency braking situation. A global sensation, this ground-breaking innovation is now standard across all vehicle categories. The S-Class underlined its status as an automotive engineering benchmark and its model designation became a generic term for high-end vehicles.

To this day the S series W116, command respect, they are an icon of elegance a symbol that you have made it in society
I can imagine that if you were to bought a brand new Benz back in 1972 it could realistically last you a lifetime. And I don't think you can buy car like that today.
Skawagon i know people that have, and they did last that long, particularly the diesel models, 300d and 240d respectively.
My dad got his in 1976 and sold it in 1990. It was still on the road till 2005.

I bought one of these back in the 1970's with the thought it would be a forever car.. To my horror When it was 5 years old it started rusting out in the rockers and trunk; the door seals would allow the floorboards to fill with water. the camshafts went flat at 60,000 miles the valve seals wore out at 80,000 so it smoked clouds of oil like crazy; the Transmission went out, the air conditioning drier disintegrated and thoroughly ruined the entire system. the Turn signal stalk stopped working, etc. ect. etc. I babied that car and it was a lemon. Later models of the w116 weren't much better. Just ask anyone about the dreaded climate master control and the electric coolant pump. Broken window regulators. So I was driving around with windows down in a visibly rusty, crazed cracking paint, smoking hulk. Sorry but that is the truth. Oh year the Becker Mexico burned up.
The thing is the difference between a Mercedes and other cars back then was huge. The engineering, build quality and reliability were head and shoulders above everyone else. Stepping into a Mercedes compared to any other car was a real occasion. You coukd feel, smell and hear the difference. Now the world has caught up and even a Mid executive car ( Ford - Vauxhall - Jaguar etc ) have all made milestones in improvements - yet Mercedes has about 89 variations of each model, everything can be had with an AMG badge and in most cases the so called leather seats aren't really that... Everybody else has gone forward...and Mercedes ( with the exception of the Maybach ) has gone backwards - relatively speaking.

Utterly WRONG. A cheap, sorry excuse for an S class. Both its ancestors and its predecessors were FAR SUPERIOR to this non-luxurious junk, and its AWFUL exterior color in the video is the epitome of 70s BAD TASTE. It sure will NOT be missed!
I have a ‘75 450SEL and a ‘80 450SL. They are absolutely fantastic. My SEL is my daily drive errands car.

I own a w124 and have driven other benzes... the feel is totally different. The cars of nowadays don't have that drive feel

I daresay even if you pop quizzed a kid today and just said 'Mercedes Benz' he or she would picture a 116 or a 123. The quintessential Benz design and peak of quality engineering.
I had a hell of a prang in one of these cars. I rolled it like a corkscrew at about 160 and walked away with a black eye and shock. If I had been in anything else I wouldnt be writing this comment! Greatest respect to MB.

Your description is wrong the 1968 Jensen Interceptor FF was the first production car fitted with anti lock brakes which was a Dunlop system derived from use on aircraft brakes

Einen 1972er 280SE hatte ich mal in den 90ern. Zwar schon völlig kaputt, aber dieses erhabene Fahrgefühl und das sehr ausgewogen coole Design waren unvergleichlich. Wäre es nicht so ein Spritfresser, würde ich ihn mir heute wieder kaufen 🧡

Have a 1980 450 SEL. Best highway car but don't try driving on icy roads. Once that weight starts to slide there's no way you can get it back.

Given the displacement, these cars were difficult to buy in Italy for tax reasons, but they are still too beautiful today; it took years to get to a Mercedes, but in the end I managed to buy a used E270 CDI from 2002, I would not change mine Mercedes with no other car in the world.

Everyone should hate the so-called "Mercedes" cars currently listed for sale. They are a mock of the real Mercedes Benz like the one in the video, they also removed the badge to avoid comparison with the previous cars. They also use Renault engines because they can't make a good engine on their own.
