Feral barn cats are incredibly common in the Midwest of the United States. And it isn't uncommon to move in and have them there. Also loads of people have cat colonies in my area. There are several people who (when they can afford to) build various housing structures and have like a cat city. Something my job does is give out canned food to people who care for those colonies so it isn't an added expense on them and they can continue to help the cats.

Yup, my Grandparents' farm (Minnesota) had many semiferal barn cats over the years. And just like his parents before him, when my dad inherited part of the farm, dad has been giving the kitties love & cat safe foods. The one light orange floof looks a lot like the orange floof ferals in that vid. He is also very loving to humans, but doesn't want to stay in the house for more than some treats & snuggles. They were able to get him & his brothers neutered thankfully.

My husband had a mallard duck when he was a kid that his mom rescued as an orphaned duckling. His name was Leonard. Leonard had a doggy door and would run in the house every morning to knock on my husband's door to wake him up and when come when called like a dog. He would wait at the driveway for him to come home from school, too. Leonard eventually was released to a pond on a farm with other ducks, and everytime they would visit he would come running from wherever he was to see them and was the leader of the farm ducks. 😊

My dad's cat was born feral. She had a hard time trusting humans but quickly became comfortable with the family. She especially adores my dad which is why she became his cat. I picked her at the shelter but she picked him. She even goes on walks with him but not anyone else. I'm fine with that. Sussan's happiness is most important so he can have her. 🙂 I have my parrots and chickens anyway.

On my first day of working at a pet store I saw a small step ladder in front of one of the larger aquariums. I tried to put it in the maintenance closet but my manager said it is supposed to be there. About one week later, a elderly woman and her westie come into the store and the westie immediately runs to the step ladder and stares at the fish. The woman proceeds to shop for around 30 mins while her dog is just staring at the fish, completely unphased by anything around him. I was then told that the step ladder is Chauncy's 'fish observation platform' and should remain there at all times.

Worked in rescue for 16 years. I remember the first FIV cat I had a lot of interaction with, Foxtrot. He was so calm and social that he was permitted to hang out without any restraints on top of the kennels at adoption events so he could walk around and meet people. Despite being the most sociable, well-behaved cat we ever had for my entire time working there, the person who ended up taking him was one of the employees at the pet supply store where we hosted our adoption events, who had seen him and his amazing behavior week after week after week. She couldn't fathom why nobody had taken him after months, and finally inquired about him. When she found out he hadn't gone out because he was FIV positive, she didn't hesitate for a second, she knew he'd be worth every second of his potentially shorter life.
More recently, a family that was rendered homeless by the husband/father, who decided he was more invested in his second family, was forced to surrender their two 9 year old cats while house-hunting. The original plan was that the family would find new housing and then take their pets back, which was why my parents agreed to foster them. Within a few weeks though, one began to decline in health, despite seeming to adjust well cognitively and emotionally (as opposed to the other one, who was super skittish and stressed for a long time). Within two months, she'd lost most of her fur and had developed hives. After numerous vet trips, we learned that the stress of the move had activated her dormant FIV, which had caused her to become highly allergic to most cat food, as well as a few environmental allergies. Eventually, we learned that the family had been unable to obtain housing that allowed their cats, so the two became permanently ours. Our FIV girl is doing much better now, on a special food and allergy medication, and most of her fur has grown back. We are incredibly happy with our special needs/senior kitties. It's absolutely worth it, even though we won't have as much time with them, and we're glad that their younger years were spent in a loving home as well.

A lot of the time barn cats are seen as work animals for pest control. Farmers use them to help keep vermin down so they don't have to rely on traps or poisons. Most are half feral so they are more likely to hunt for food and stuff but are usually well taken care of and fed.

I think it's always a good point to bring up when people try to argue that cats should be outside free roaming. Is the tremendous amount of environmental damage they do. Not only is being an outdoor cat dangerous, and decreases their life (Which Why would you want to put an animal you love in a dangerous situation or do something that decreases their life), it also is a detriment to the wildlife wherever they are free to roam. A catio or outdoor supervised leash time is the safest way to have a cat outside.

    • @GreenGorgeousness

@@MotoGPForever4527 Humans shouldn't be allowed outside, truly. But cats are the way they are because of humans, so we have to make sure we take better care of the environment. And yeah, that involves being out in the environment, and one of the steps for a better environment is taking cats out of it and preserving the ecosystems.

15:17 I love it when you see Blind Skateboarders, they are amazingly talented. It take skateboarders years to understand there relationship with the board and how to treat it as an extension of your body. Blind skaters truly show this as they are able to preform tricks by being able to predict where the board will go even without the assistance of sight. I had skateboarded for many years until I had an accident and was unable to continue skating. One big part of skating is the concept of persistence. In believing you can do something no matter how many times you previously have been unable to. The amount that blind skaters must fall and fail at tricks must be staggering, I feel like to say they are impressive is almost an understatement. IMO they are as impressive as any Olympic athlete.

My grandparents have build an enclosure for their many cats out in the garden. It is connected by a catwalk to one of the house windows so the cats can go in and out whenever they please. There’s grass, a sandbox and lots of vertical space for climbing. Their neighbours tho look at them like they’re some kind of loonies, because most people in our town just let their cats free range. But we’ve lost so many kitties to dogs, disease, cars, some even got poisoned by these same neighbours, that we had to build a safe space for them. An enclosure that has enough enrichment in it is NOT a prison. Free-range, however, is most often than not a death sentence.

nov 22, 2019, my ex husband's mother had to move from her apartment into a nursing home after her health declined. she couldn't take her cat with her. instead of sending it to a shelter to be rehomed, or letting his sister take it (who is known to abandon animals), he asked me if i would be willing to take her in and he would pay for all of her needs, food, litter, vet visits, etc. i had been wanting to get a cat of my own because they've got "healing purrs" and i have been struggling pretty bad with depression lately and i don't take meds for personal reasons. anyway....i of course said yes and she already knew my kids from their weekly visits to their grandma. sadly, my ex mother in law passed jan 20,2020, but i am doing my best to give the cat a good loving home for however long she is with me. she is a beautiful calico and is 9 years old this year, my kids have her son at their dad's house, who's 7, and my niece named her after her favorite disney princess, cinderella, but my kids and i call her cinder instead. because i unfortunately do not have a job, i am always home and she is always next to me no matter where i go in my apartment. i am teaching her how to walk on a harness/leash, except she's not too fond of the harness yet.
