I think one more "secret" could have been to check the tire...inside and out, for sharps. Only thing more fun than fixing a flat tire once is fixing a flat tire twice 😉

Great stem tool! Another tip- if you put the nut on the cable before you push it through the rim, once you have attached the tube and pulled the stem through you can thread the nut on without unscrewing the cable. Sometimes getting the stem to stay in the hole while threading the nut on can be tricky and this would help that.

Malcolm Smith said that in the ISDT, they would run on a flat tire for a mile or so until it naturally broke the bead. Those guys could also change a flat in 4 minutes.
Malcom's the man! Hell, any IDST rider has my respect. Malcolm is the reason you never see me take my helmet off in this video (see comment response to @Mr39knuck). I lucked into an incredible group of "moto-mentors" (mostly thanks to my outgoing and fellow moto-enthusiast father) including Chris Carter (mentioned in this video) another ISDT hero and hell of a tire changer!
I don't know if they still do it but in ISDT the diameter of the rims would be shaved a couple of millimeters on one side to help speed up tire removal.

Man I need to get some of those CO2 cartridges. good video! I am extremely guilty of not ever being properly prepared. Zip ties, 1 spark plug and wrench, and a leatherman.

when removing a tube type tyre you start at the valve. this is so you can push the opposite side into the wheel well to make it easier. and finish at the valve when refitting.

Should gave worked from the other side, less chance of catching your hands on sprocket.
Definitely could, but I didn't want to put a lot of awkward force on that brake lever arm.

I have been told to screw the valve retaining nut down about half way.
Different people do it differently- I thread it up to the cap.

Yep! Those will work just fine! They have varying capacities so the bigger you can find the better for moto other wise you will just need to use two of the bicycle ones. I usually carry 3 at time if I'm carrying the smaller capacity ones👍

Great video. If I remember, I put the stem nut onto the cable of the valve stem puller before attaching to the tube. That way, the stem can be secured with the nut with the puller still attached, thereby preventing the valve stem from accidentally slipping back through the rim hole.

Two rim locks ! And you made it look easy ! 3 short tyre levers, tick. Such a good build on that bike, and they didn't use a QD rear hub. One thing you did, but didn't mention...start at the valve, end at the valve, drummed into me as an apprentice.

Where to. begin… so much value in this video. Yes your suggestion about practicing tire changes at home made me want to run right down to the garage now and start practicing.
Is there a reason why you wore your helmet the whole time?
Yes the bead locks are cool but as you get older you will likely find your desire for coolness fades. Although when it does you will still yearn for the days of fitting bead locks.
The image of the red towel brought to mind subliminal marketing tactics. You let the towel speak for itself and that was a very nice touch. Brain is telling me I must get that towel.

What a kind and thoughtful string of comments! Great question about the helmet! I learned that from Malcolm Smith whom I have had the distinct pleasure of watching change tubes on the the side of trails in Baja more than once! (although he's always helping others, he never seemed to get flats himself) He never takes his helmet off. Someone asked him why once and I can't remember what he said - I'm sure it was a tastefully funny response.😁

I did my first tire change last year. I had a 20 year old tire on my CB750 that was a real pain in the butt to get off. I was impressed how much abuse my rim could take as I fought that tire. I bought one of those tire stem tools off Amazon because I couldn't get the tube stem into place without it, no matter how hard I tried. That tool made it easy.
Saves a ton of frustration!
