  • The Red Wing Iron Ranger is a killer boot, there is no doubt about that. It's a fan favorite and an excellent value, but what if you just want something more? Something made of superior materials, with better finishing, and a bit less common? Here are ten superior alternatives to the ever popular Iron Ranger.

    Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
    I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

Imagine someone said, "Hey, your $2,000 Ford Pinto is quality, but this $200,000 Ferrari is just as good in quality." The inference is that the Iron Rangers must be quality if they're comparable to a handcrafted boot that's cost hundreds of dollars more.

      @@MikeThePike316 I'd say you are misinterpreting the "inference" they are actually making. The comparison doesn't exist because the IRs are as good as the other boots. The leverage of the IRs comes from its popularity and history, which have very little to do with their actual quality. The IRs are the trendsetters, but the other boots are far more sophisticated, customizable and durable, which is their leverage.

    usually lasted 2-4 years under extreme work conditions, with
    a lot of climbing hard terrain...
    I went through 3 pair of them; which, (come to think of it..
    I shoulda kept them as trophies) since I already retired working

      He didn't even go into the territory of bespoke boots, either. With a bespoke boot (or shoe), they make the last custom for you, which is a weeks long process where the shoemaker measures your feet (both of them, since they are usually slightly different), meets with you to discuss your desires for the boots/shoes, and makes a trial pair for you to try on before making the final boot. The whole thing will run you $5,000 (for a shoe) up to $10,000 (for a boot) or even more. The result, though, is a shoe or boot that fits your feet absolutely perfectly.

    When I first viewed this video upon release I was looking into purchasing my first pair of Iron Rangers: I purchased it and enjoyed it for a couple of months before I developed plantar fasciitis; my podiatrist effectively banned them from my rotation encouraging me to ditch fashion shoes for orthopedic shoes or inserts. After looking around the market for a better choice, I decided to get a pair of Alden 405 and was happier for it. This boot actually has arch support, a feature that is absolutely important for me because I have flat feet and eee width feet. My health problems drastically improved but still I looked around for other options with superior arch support. Fortunately I was able to purchase a pre owned, like new, White’s MP Sherman. It is without dispute the most supportive and comfortable boot I currently own. So to all of those who are appalled by the prices of these boots, I completely understand. These boots aren’t cheap but if you’re willing to buy Alden Factory Seconds or pre owned boots from online markets, you can also find more “affordable” options. It took me about three years to acquire my current boot collection so please take your time and spend your hard earned money wisely. Great video as always!

    Even though the iron ranger has many similarities to these other boots, they are not really in the same category. Partially because of the style of the boot, some of the others being more dressy and partially because of the price tag. And even though some of the other boots may be better looking boots, the clown toe, which makes the IR look less "pretty", also makes it look more masculine which I think is what many guys (and girls) who buy the IR is looking for.
    I like the video because many other youtubers makes it sound like the IR is the best quality boot around. There are more good looking boots, there are boots with higher quality leather and craftmanship, and there are definitely better (real) workboots. The IR is what it is and it speaks to a lot of people, me being one of them, but it is not the best boot around in any sort of way.

      Red wing makes some seriously good boots. That's all I know. See I actually use my boots for work and my heritage Roughnecks are some of the best work boots I've ever owned. You don't have to get a model that says work boot to use it for work. Unless you're looking for steel toe. I mean these things are the epitome of work boots. They're designed after them. Built like tanks, one of the most rugged vibram soles out there and water just pours off of these things so they're basically waterproof. Especially with the tounge design.
      Now imo as a walk around boot and for dress, the IR not only looks almost perfect but it's definitely built more then rugged enough. You're not gonna wear out an IR from regular use.
      So while I encourage looking at other brands, I think the IR is well worth it

These are flat feeling boots and I wouldn’t mind standing up a bit more for feel (I’m 6’1”). Those White, Wesco, and Nick Cuban heals have me curious. Might not need that much heel but maybe 1/2 “ leather heal spacer? Thoughts?

    I got a pair of White's Bounty Hunters for work 4 years ago, using them 40+ hours a week. They were expensive but they lasted this long and only now needed a resole. Sent them to White's, paid $150 and got them back in less than 2 weeks. That up front cost keeps you from having to buy new boots in the future.

    I just bought a pair of off the rack Limmer boots while in New Hampshire for $400. I put down $50 to be put on the waiting list for a pair of custom fitted boots. The wait is currently 20 months, the cost will be around $800, they measure your feet, and make a maple cast that is used to make the boot out of one piece of leather, and a Vibram sole. Peter Limmer, the grandson of the founder makes them by hand. They are hiking boots that have been to the top of Everest, C. Everett Coop, the former Surgeon General had a pair. Now if I could just get the operation to fix my toe, I can break them in.

    How do you wear boots when it is hot? I know there are work boots and you just work through the heat and wear boots and work gear when doing so. I also know that casual boots like the Iron Ranger look best with pants. What is a boot wearing option with shorts (work, casual, recreation)? Is is just the usual hiking boots? Great video......Thanks

    • @pattgsm
      @pattgsm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beyond hiking or tactical boots which serve a very distinctive purpose. The boots and shorts look can be very tricky and should probably be avoided. Suede loafers, boat shoes, sneakers, & espadrilles are much better options w/ shorts. However, you could try Suede Clarks Desert Boot, RW Weekender, Astorflex Greenflex. W/ the Clarks having no the least amount of structure, they'll probably be the least awkward.

    A note on the boots as a custom boot owner for 20+ years. The "clown shoe" is a part of the Munson type last used, wide toebox, narrow instep and heel for good fit. I did not wear my custom Russell Moccasin Minimalist or others at work due to safety rules. But do have an odd size 8 1/2 EEEE. Custom boots finally made long hiking comfortable.

    • @lorimcquinn3966
      @lorimcquinn3966 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The basic Iron Ranger isn't built on a Munson Last, RW now offers a 8011 Munson Lasted Iron Ranger although it's a different boot. As far as the clown toe look, I feel RW exaggerates the look of the boot. You can get a Munson Lasted boot that doesn't look like this. My 1988 Chippewa Engineer Munson Lasted boots fit like a glove, looks svelte in comparison and are still hanging in there (33) years later.

    Hey Carl, awesome unbiased opinion. Staying in the topic, do you believe there is boot snobs? (e. g. only this brand is good)?

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no doubt about it, snobs are abundant in the world of boots and menswear in general. Snobbery really gets bad when someone feels their choice makes THEM superior, and not just the product. Most people would never dream of buying a pair of $1,000 boots and that’s understandable. It’s almost like telling someone that a Rolls Royce is better than a Honda Accord, it’s objectively true but there are a lot of factors to consider. If someone goes into tremendous debt to buy that Rolls Royce it’s not the best car for THEM.

      Frank used to work for Nick's. He and his son run as relatively small operation in Washington. Frank's has a few dress/light duty options that compare to the Iron Ranger such as the Front Range, Wilshire, and High Country. These go from the low $425 to $500 price range. He uses 7oz-8oz leather for the upper construction as well. I'm probably going to order an 8" High Country boot later this summer.

      The Iron Ranger was initially a work boot. Historically, they have a bulbous cap toe since steel toes weren’t around yet (about 100 years ago). None of the boots in this video are actual work boots.
