Can You Use A Leaf Blower To Dry Your Car? CFM VS MPH?

  • In this car drying video we talk about leaf blowers, specifically on if they are effective at car drying. When looking at leaf blowers two main specifications are measured, CFM and MPH. CFM standard for cubic feet per minute and MPH stands for miles per hour.
    So which is more important for car drying, cfm or mph? We'll use two different leaf blowers to demonstrate the difference between cfm and mph. The first leaf blower will be from Black & Decker, model number LSW221. This leaf blower has a mph rating of 130 MPH but has a CFM of 130. Will this leaf blower do well in car drying? We shall see
    The other leaf blower is from WORX and its model number WG520. The WG520 has a mph rating of 110 mph and a cfm of 600. So opposite to the black and decker model, the WORX WG520 has a much car cfm rating. On the flip side, the black and decker model has a higher mph rating vs the WORX. So which leaf blow is more effective at drying your car?

    Just a note, the size of the outlet on these blowers is a significant factor when comparing them. Velocity of the air output is inversely proportional to the size of the duct. i.e. the larger the duct size the slower the velocity for the same volumetric flow rate. So we can deduce that flow rate is king, and then a better duct size and shape, like a letterbox attachment would give you the best of all performance by giving an even higher velocity at the output. Notice that the black and decker has a much smaller more rectangular outlet. If you add that to the Worx blower it would perform even better. Just imho as an engineer. And thanks for the great video comparison, definitely getting a leaf blower now.

    I was looking for a lightweight blower for my deck. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxgioZQl3J5wPGAeDINzbieKbT5qomSEx3 There are some huge trees around my house and the leaves and pods drop all over my deck. Having to move furniture around to sweep has become too big a chore. This blower was the answer. It is light enough for this 70yr old lady and powerful enough to blow all the tree droppings off my rather large deck. Thank you B&D. Be aware the cord is not included. I use a 3 prong outdoor cord 25' cord for my 12' x 20' deck. The cord retainer works very well, but don't try to pass the plug through it. That is NOT how it works. You just have to loop the cord and it works great. One of my best purchases. Very happy.

    Got the WORX WG520 yesterday October 14, 2022, and used it today Oct. 15, and does a mediocre job. Washed my car today and using the WORX WG520 made water beads very small and plentiful. Took me 20 minutes to blow dry my new 2022 Honda Civic Touring, built on September 2022 (date of mfg on the driver door side) and received from a Honda dealership on October 4, 2022, with 2 miles. I bought the blower to avoid getting watermarks or streaks. It does blow leaves very well, but not so good for drying a car. I duct-taped a microfiber cloth around the plastic tip so an accidental touch on the car paint would not leave a scratch. The WORX WG520 is very light, the air intake will suck your tee shirt when close to it. I think suction is better than it blows. The Ryobi 730 CFM 40V Blower could be better because it has 130 CFM more than the WORX WG520 600 CFM. For $55 plus add sales tax, you are better off spending $90 to $120 for a much better product. You get what you pay for! The WORX WG521 is said to be 800 CFM you could try it. WORX WG520 not recommended as a car dryer. Plan on getting a battery-powered unit because dragging around an electrical cord is a nuisance and you don't have to worry about becoming electrocuted after washing your car. Safety First!

    best option for the money is a pet dryer, they have a hose so you can direct the airflow easily without risking scratching the paint

    Thanks for explaining the CFM vs MPH! I was wondering about if there was really a big difference!
    The black & decker or really ANY leaf blower is fine for blowing out water from badging, door handles, mirrors, wheels, grilles, lights and door jambs. Drying the ENTIRE car with a blower is just going a little overboard!

    • @falcon759
      @falcon759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      What do you mean drying the entire car with a blower is going overboard? That's the whole point - to dry the car in a touch-less manner!

    When MPH is about the same, your test is almost a comparison between low CFM and high CFM, which shows who is the winner without testing. The test would be more accurate with a low CFM + high MPH vs high CFM + low MPH.

    Use the exhaust function of your shop vac. It works great and you already own it. No reason to buy anything else. I have two Stihl leaf blowers, a handheld and a large backpack. I'll stick to the shop vac.

      Leaf blower without filtration is great for forcefully blowing all over your freshly washed car.... dust, dirt, grit, tree pollen, and whatever other crap is lingering in the air. Leaf blow your wet car, then wipe it down with a damp towel and you get....a dirty damp towel.

    I don't understand. Why accelerate evaporation with a blower? What's the hurry?
    I understand toweling, because the towel soaks up the water's minerals and contaminants that would otherwise be left behind during evaporation that cause water spots. I don't understand how fast evaporation is better than slow evaporation. Are we expecting it to blow the contaminated liquid water off the surface, like wiping with airflow? Does it do more of that than evaporating?
    I don't detail my beater cars, but on the occasion that I wash a decent car, I want to towel it as quickly as I can, hopefully in the shade, before any water starts to dry. Seems like a blower would evaporate quite a bit of water in comparison, no?
