This was the last song from a TV special. He wasn't supposed to sing it,..but he went against the Colonel and did it anyway Elvis was heartbroken that during that year he had lost two good friends...Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy... he did this as a tribute to them. Elvis was a huge humanitarian, he believed everything he sung in the song... hence the emotion. It's writers' based it on the MLK "I had a dream" speech

So happy to see that you have found Elvis. I am 66 and I had not heard this particular song - someone said he cried when he went backstage. He was a deeply religeous man and cared and about his fellow human being, no matter what colour. A gospel singer - it comes across. I love sharing this with a new generation. I am from Uk

I agree. but I'm glad we got to live in the Elvis era & got to turn on the radio & hear his songs & watch him perform on TV. I'm very glad we can now see him on TH-cam . Like you say, now the younger generations can see him & enjoy him just as we do. I've watched several different reaction videos of the reactors first time listening to Elvis sing & it's always the same...They're amazed at what they heard. It's not what they were expecting to hear. Elvis was one of the best singers thre was or ever will be!!!

That was the ending performance of his 1968 Comeback Special. He sang it to honor MLK who was assassinated in Apr. 1968. Elvis hit the National scene in Jan. 1956, with his recording of Heartbreak Hotel. From 1956-his death at age 42, in 1977, he recorded about 750 songs, was in 31 movies and he toured and performed in Vegas from 1969-1977. He excelled at every singing genre. He was a great performer live, and he could dance. He grew up dirt poor, and was known for his generosity, charisma and talent. On June 24th, a 2:30 hr new documentary movie is being released, with Tom Hanks playing Elvis’ manager.

I can vividly remember the day that I came home from school and my mother was reading the newspaper and crying. She told me that Elvis was dead. Everyone was devastated. People were crying openly in the streets. Many years later I experienced the same phenomena when Princess Diana died. Public grieving on a world wide scale. Elvis meant so much because he connected with your soul. Amen.

Youve opened a HUGE rabbit hole, he started in the 50's, went in the army, came back in the 68 comeback special, played Vegas for ten years, he also was the first performer to record worldwide by satellite in his excellent "Aloha Hawaii" TV special which he close the show with this song you just reviewed toured the US etc etc -- recorded like 700 songs including gospel rock country and is the only singer in music history to be in ALL music halls of fame. Keep going, its a very deep hole but full of amazing performances. None had a voice like Elvis, great as this performance was you have so much more to see and hear.

    "Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!"
You are so right about that - both the song and the man.
It's good to see so many younger reactors checking out Elvis. This is such an excellent song for a first reaction. It's from his 1968 Comeback Special and it was written in the wake of a very turbulent time in America following the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. The message is actually an echo of Dr King's famous dream voiced in Washington in 1963.
As you can see Elvis sang this with so much conviction and passion. He admired Dr King (some Elvis fans tend to claim that they were friends but there's no substantiated proof of this) and was devastated
    to hear of his murder.
Such a shame that a song with a message first heard in 1968 remains too relevant today.
By the way, if you delve deeper into Elvis, you're in for a treat. He sang just about every genre of music: from country to rock n roll, gospel, rhythm and blues and pop.

This song was a response to the assassinations of Martin Luther King & Bobby Kennedy. A lot of the lyrics are quotes taken from Dr. King's speeches.
The saddest part of this song is that over 50 years later it's still relevant as we are STILL struggling to come together because of lingering racial inequality.
Peace to you in 2021 Teez!

Actually If I can Dream had no relationship to Bobby Kennedy's death but did to Dr. King's death. Walter Brown wrote the song in response to Dr. King's speech and death, recorded it in June 1968 and released it in November 1968. Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June 1968 but the song was written before in April/May.

From a purely factual standpoint where the song is concerned, you are right but this song was a reaction to much more than MLK`s assassination. There was also the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965. Emotionally speaking, songs like this don`t develop overnight.
Psychologically the Nation and the world was in turmoil and in a very vulnerable state.
During that time leaders have been assassinated left, right, and centre, while the Vietnam War was still going on costing so many lives.

    @nancyleonard4531 3 ปีที่แล้ว

He was simply amazing. I grew up knowing Elvis especially in the early 70s when he was getting a little older and as he got older his songs became more soulful and thought provoking. Don’t get me wrong, he was always incredibly talented and truly the king of rock and roll. When he grew up in Tupelo Mississippi, he often attended black churches and gospel music ran deep in his soul and in his music. He has put out some gospel songs. I feel this song reflects this so strongly. This special in 1968 was right after Martin Luther King jr was assassinated. “If I can dream” was a reaction to the struggle African Americans were and still are going through as well as
The loss of such a great leader who just wanted peace and equality.

He never sang this again because it was a tribute to MLK & Bobby Kennedy being assassinated. He holds his feelings inside a lot and they come out when he sings. He’s a very emotive singer. He can grab on to your soul and not let it go until the tears are rolling down your face & you’re not even sure why. Thanks so much for this. Great pick and it’s great to discover new stuff. Especially someone who’s so iconic and you never knew why. God bless. 👏👏😃🕺🏻🕺🏻🎸🙏🏼🙏🏼

I was 8 years old in the 70's watching an old show on late at night name Roustabout and there was this really cool guy starring in it. His name was Elvis. Like you it took about 20 seconds of Elvis and I was a fan ever since. Your reaction reminded me a little of mine so long ago. It was cool to see.

Elvis was devastated by the assassinations of his friends, Dr. Martin Luther King, and also Bobby Kennedy who were involved in the equality movement. Elvis also sings "In the Ghetto" which was another appeal for treating people as equals.

"If I Can Dream" written specially to close the "Comeback Special for NBC" by Elvis Presley.
Nothing to do with The Great Martin Luther King.

@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 The words used in the song are from MLK's "I have a dream" speech. It was sung in honor of MLK and Bobby Kennedy, who was a fighter for equal rights. They were both assassinated that year -- a huge loss to us all.

It may have been sung in his honor.
      No argument from me.
However, you Elvis fans carry on as if it as specifically written for MLK.
The song was written for his comeback special.
      Oh and one more thing.
You Elvis fans keep making mention about Cissy Houston, she was one of his back up singers, how many other back up singers did he have that were black? and what he did for the black community.
Fact is the back up singers on the album are "the blossoms".
They couldn't appear with your king god of rock n roll Elvis so "the sweet inspirations" were asked to fill in.
What puzzles me is that Elvis started his career in 1954 and ended in 1977.
      That is 23 years.
In 23 years it equates to 276 months.
Now in those 276 months he used black people for a total of four months.
And you all want to tell me he did so much for the black community.
      Give me a break!!
His house keeper for fuck sake was a black woman, was her name mammie?
Or was she being stereo typed because that's all a black woman could do?
Was the job beneath a white person?
Or was Elvis really a racist?
      Not saying he was.
How many people of color appeared in his movies?
      Ones that had speaking parts.
      A big fat zero....
Elvis himself may or may not have been a racist, but the evidence shows someone in his crowd sure was.
      cronies

@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 It's a shame you're so bitter and angry about Elvis being the KING, who did more for the black community than you wish to give him credit for. Seems white people can't do right for doing wrong in your view. FYI: Elvis was courageous and defiant in his support of equality, even risking his career by speaking up and walking the walk. Perhaps you need to appreciate help when it's given and just say thanks rather than question the facts and complain about how he still didn't fix the world because there could be racists in his audience. That's just not fair.

For a look at a much younger Elvis and to see what all the fuss was about over "Elvis the Pelvis" that got some groups (ignorant bigots) upset check out the fun he was having in the Jailhouse Rock video from 1958ish
