    Max Tech - to the point, facts, thorough testing, results, clear explanations
    Other channels - fluff, basic testing, talking about Max Tech’s findings like they discovered it.
    Over the years Max Tech has consistently been the ones to find any issues because of their thorough testing. Even though they are Apple fans they don’t let that stop them from thorough testing and honest reporting. Other channels are concerned about staying in Apple’s good books in order to keep getting free review units, Max Tech is concerned about us, the viewer, and gives us honest data at the expense of being in Apple’s good books. I for one am so glad this channel exists!

    16GB RAM and 512SSD in this era should be the base model especially since you can't upgrade any of it. Apple's really cheaping out here with slower than expected SSDs.

    • @dulistanheman
      @dulistanheman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Well, that's why the Mac is cheaper than iPhone. Once Apple bump up the based Mac model on 512SSD with 16GB RAM, *they will increase the Based price guaranteed.*
      Apple always find a way to get as much cash from us.

    • @dzmitry5697
      @dzmitry5697 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sure, and with such Swap there is a big chance to break down the ssd for a small period of time. And since there is no way to repair it, I don't know if there is any reason to purchase base model. But if we add 16GB ram + 512GB ssd, than better to take M1 Pro 14''.

    • @HeavenSevenWorld
      @HeavenSevenWorld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@dulistanheman The iPhone has many cameras, a 5G chip, a better screen, and is much more in demand, so the price is right. Judging just by the raw material cost, Apple could easily sell 16/256 as the base MBP model for the same price and barely notice the loss. Instead, they choose to capitalize on the M1 hype and ruin earned capital of the fantastic, initial reputation of the transition. It looks like Apple is afraid of excessive warm feelings and deeply into existential crisis without the daily portion of the righteous hate.

    Don’t get discouraged with the haters. With more popularity more negative attention also arrives. It also confirms you’re doing something right. I love your reviews because they tell people exactly what’s going on with the machine. This is exactly why I am waiting for your videos for the M2 MacBook Air. What I learned about your videos is that the M1/M2 will always work better if it has more memory/ram; and if it has more storage it will also help because the machines sometimes uses swap memory.

Apple is making a big mistake when they down grade their lower priced models just to have a low starting point. By pointing out that SSDs show down significantly the longer it takes to transfer big files answers my question as to why large files seem to take much longer than they should. Is there any SSDs that are better in this respect?

    The base model MacBook Air M2 is made for people who are not using the MacBook for hardcore photo and video editing. It works just fine for web browsing, non cpu and gpu intensive coding, and using Microsoft applications for business.This makes up the majority of people who buy Macs and the reason why the base model sells so well. The people who need a Mac for photo and video editing should just get the MacBook Pro 14 in because it is at a near identical price point (when its on sale) to the MacBook Air 512 gb SSD and 16 gb RAM.

    I am forced to switch from Windows to MacOS and decided to wait for the M2 MacBook AIr. Is it likely that it will have a slow SSD on the 256GB model too and only the 512GB model will have the fast speeds? Because if that should be the case I would be forced to spend another 200$ for the storage upgrade, and since I already upgraded from 8 to 16gb of RAM this would get it to $1,7k, making the 14" 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro a much better choice. In that case only the M2 MacBook Air base model would make sense in terms of price to performance ratio. Waiting for the M2 Pro MacBook Pro is not an option for me.

    • @chinmay2355

      The 1TB SSD should have a larger cache but same read/write speeds as the 512 SSD. So file transfers should be better which it already is on the 512 model, rest should be pretty much same.

  • @lucannon

    I own a 27" 5k iMac from 2017 - It has this Fusion Drive of 1 Terrabyte with only 32 gigs of SSD. It is painfully slow for photo editing, I think even the base model of the M2 would be a huge jump up. I do not want to spend too much money. But I am curios if 8 Gigs of Ram are enough, when you use Lightroom and Photoshop simultanliously, without having no other apps open. What is crazy, is that even the 512gb model of the m2 is much slower using swap than the m1 using swap, that is even worse than only having slower ssd for file transfer and export, because it makes a real world difference. A very good video and thanks for covering that issue with the slow ssds.

  • @matthewbraybrooke7670
    @matthewbraybrooke7670 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    From this video I can work out that the M2 MacBook Air is going to be a massive disappointment as it will likely have the same SSD issue and won’t have active cooling so will be throttled and the M1 will perform better over more tests

  • @hegedusuk
    @hegedusuk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's clearly a bit of a scandal - Apple's base storage option being half storage that's lower performance. We pay so much for Apple Kit because we expect it's going to be "the best" and faster than the previous model. Apple needs to be transparent and explain under what circumstances these base-level computers are going to be faster, and slower.
    Reminds me of the first MacBook I got - the M1 Macbook Pro 13-inch with 8GB RAM / 256GB Storage. For my work (no video editing, large files or heavy computation - just need a lot of browser windows open, a remote support tool, and Outlook/email), it was fine... until it wasn't. After half a day of work, there wouldn't be enough RAM. It would start to swap to the SSD, and slow down MASSIVELY. Performance would fall off a cliff! Switching between open apps would increase to several seconds, sometimes more than 30; Opening new apps would get unusably slow; I'd get the spinning ball even within an app. It was just no good for my work pattern at all. I switched to a Macbook Pro 14 inch with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
    What a difference! I *never* get those slowdowns. It just switches instantly between all my open apps without so much as a stutter - even with parallels running occasionally. It literally just keeps running with no problems whatsoever!
    The problem with computer performance is it's very dependent on the user's particular workflow and work pattern, and it can be slightly subjective. The other problem with computer performance is the 'falling-off-a-cliff' effect. It can be absolutely fine and it takes just one more app, or one more browser tab -- and there's suddenly not enough RAM, and swapping can bring the performance crashing down. In many real-life situations, you won't be able to tell the difference between a 5000-MB per second write speed and a 2500-MB per second write speed, but that, combined with lower RAM capacities can make all the difference.
    In the end, I gave my 8MB 13 inch model to my daughter, whose usage is much lighter, and she has had no problems whatsoever. Note: that was really as a replacement for her MacBook Air from 2013 that I left on top of my car and drove off with! It suffered a screen problem after I retrieved it later from the middle of a busy road junction 🙂
