I think HD should be the IPTV option at least for all the channels. SD should just be the backup feed only. That and I hope eventually UHD channels are offered but that can be something in like separate section for now

    • @HeyJay2000
      @HeyJay2000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Yeah, I'd love UHD channels, but I know it will be a very long time until Channel providers actually want to go through with it.
Also I do argee with your idea with HD channels. It's incredibly rare to buy a Brand New TV these days that isn't HD. So I definitely think they should be the Default Channels. Especially as I'm pretty sure this new service will only be on Brand New TVs. Which unless you are getting a TV that is smaller than 40" it's UHD. So you'll have a HD TV either way.

The IP version should just reflect the users bandwidth / TV capability. There's no need to have separate EPG numbers for the different resolutions. It would probably help if the user could manually set a maximum resolution to have a bit of control over data usage.

That's a neat little unit, that white bit of furniture, if I had it, I would have a few other bits of 'kit' grouped around the telly, a freeview or sky box with the wires going towards the back, (from the front), the left hand corner, on the other side, a BT hub, a PS2 and a Xbox 360, but I would have each item in black, not sure about the potted plant but... and next to the TV set, maybe a speaker for surround sound or a rack for DVD's one side and games on the other, might move it away from the window, unless that's where the plug sockets are or if any of the wires have to go out of the wall.

Probably after all the early adopters have stumped up for new televisions and everyone else has grumbled loudly enough. If they did the plug-in option right away they wouldn't be able to maximize those sales of new hardware, after all.

Sky doesn't have a HDMI post well it do but you need a Sky satellite to be installed, and it needs to connected the Internet Ect, I know this because I got a skybox myself you have to pay bills for it but you get pretty decent channels and movies, that's on the cinemas so you can watch it at home it's called sky Cinemas.
Fire stick isn't a live TV service it's basically a rip off version of Sky go but with apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ect you need to connect that to the Internet as well. I don't know if you pay bills on it, I can't remember.

  • @ILoveWomen

Hopefully older TVs get an OTA update to support it.
It will be interesting to also see if Freeview will ever cease to exist - in Poland (and some other European countries), there was a mandatory switch to H.265 which meant you needed a new TV or a STB for the channels that upgraded to the better compression standard - I wonder if it will be the case that Freeview will be shut down, and we will have an IP only future (and in turn, a need to buy new TVs)
But all in all, a step in the right direction, making content easier to access, instead of having to go into each channels streaming app (and then there are some channels that don’t even let you stream live tv on a television, and only let you on a phone)

    • @Joel-c9i

I doubt that existing TVs will have the power to run the new interfaces, they rarely have the power to nicely run the interfaces they come with let alone anything that gets updated. How else will they sell new TVs.
Just give me a TV with many HDMI slots and let me plug boxes into it that I want.

  • @ollielewis8374
    @ollielewis8374 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Feels just like a freeview rebrand to nudge everyone towards IP tv than a whole new concept.
It doesn't look as slick/polished/moden as Sky glass - as a ex tv engineer it looks as if they have kept it as simple as possible to run on low end hardware at the expense of making it look more stylish, modern and fit for the next 10 to 20 years.
Will other streaming providers have a presence? Netflix, Disney+ etc?
How closed off will the software/hardware be? Can users install apps, customise things, be allowed some freedom or will it be a closed, locked down system - you get what you get and tough if you don't like it.
Equally I would be interested in how the system will update and the extent at which it can update, both in terms of individual apps and the system as a whole.
If at a later date new services develop, new front ends come about, will older devices be upgradable or will there just be a fragmentation of devices all capable of only doing certain things which to me goes against the whole idea of Freely being a universal, same on every device concept.
I get that its free so shouldn't expect everything - but if pretty much all devices will have it installed with no other option in the distant future (except sky, virgin etc) then it needs to encompass everything, not expect users to have seperate devices such as firesticks etc to get some services, or run some apps.

I think there's things to remember. Sky won twice. Also I'd really hope that they come up with maybe having a box rather than a new TV, because again in many households they wouldnt be able to get a new TV because that'll be another £400 or so at the start and to be honest I don't think my partner would see it as a good enough reason to get a TV :)

10:42 *7 Ways to improve the UI straight away*
    1. they should of put it in a box making it transparent/not making it darker round the info makes it look more busy/messy due to the background video
    2. removing the freely logo as it don't need to be there just put it on the guide page and actual menus.
    3. unless its a laptop/desktop they can remove the browse button we have TV guide buttons on the remote.
    4. restart can just be a restart icon no need for the text.
    5. info & episodes and be changed to just info orshow notes.
    6. put the channels logo where the freely currently is and make the show picture more square it takes up to much space most the picture can be cropped without losing context.

I think it's a good idea in principle. But I'm guessing that you'll lose the ability to record programmes, which I currently do with Freesat. A lot of channels don't have catch-up services, or if they do, they're unreliable and of poor quality. Even the major channels' catch-up services don't always match the picture quality from the broadcast signal, often zooming in a bit on the picture. (And I sometimes have to switch between devices to find one that works best with a given service - my Fire stick really doesn't like ITVX! ) My other concern centres on regional variants. With Freesat, I can put in a postcode for my preferred region, rather than settling for whatever might be the default. That's a feature I wouldn't want to lose, as I'd rather have quick access to S4C in preference to Channel 4. I'm sure Freely is the way things are going but, in particular, IPTV will surely have to improve considerably for integration to be seamless.

As I got an expensive Sony Bravia just over a year ago I was hoping to maybe ditch my BT/EE TV service when this came along but it appears they want people to buy new tv's, I invested in this television for the long term and am disappointed they are going to expect people to buy a Hitachi or a Bush tv just for this. As another commenter has said I hope they bring something out for other makes of TV but I doubt it if they have committed to a deal with one company.

Surely they will bring out a digital box or usb stick type thing. I’m sure that’s what they launched free view with and that worked with even the oldest style tvs.
It would really hurt them if they didn’t make it as cheap and as easy for people to switch over.
Having to buy a new tv seem ridiculous to me.

So its not actually free then. Your initial outlay of £300-£400+ for a new TV when most people who use tech already have a decent tv so that's a bad start, people who already have broadband won't mind so much as that's already covered in the monthly cost, but no new uptake just for this. The must offer every single channel in HD as SD is out for most and free 4k channel offerings. Its not much point giving it to people free without a good a reason to change eventually. Boxes should be offered at launch as well with 4K real AI upscaling for tech buffs and built in future proofs for at least 5 years with software upgrades like Sky. It should also include non british free channels from global broadcasters for users to choose if they wish. Opening up a new audience will give incentives to SKY to offer channels on the platform as well for ad revenue. The likes of SKY & VM are outpricing their business model and this would be a good platform for them to cut costs.

I am not convinced. I use freesat which covers alot more channels. I see freely as a faff, switching between services. I really don't understand why it is called freely, it is not TV license will still need to be paid. I have decent satellite box and would not change. If I need to stream I use the services which are readily available now. One selling points from freely about EPG is honestly laughable. ATMOS, UHD content could sell it, but atmos coming from two audio channels from the TV, na I don't think so.

Anything for a TV platform that uses the word FREE in it should be banned because it's not free you have to pay the BBC to watch the live as shown content from any station that broadcasts on the platform. If people need to buy new equipment like a TV then I can see, IMHO, that there will be hundreds of thousands if not millions of TV licence cancellations.

Why default to IP when aerial is also available? It should be a choice by the user, if I use IPTV it will use up bandwidth into my house, but if I use aerial or dish then there are no bandwidth restrictions.
But of course with IP TV you are going to be tracked totally and it is likely that trying to block trackers will be impossible, you won't be able to use a PiHole etc to bury the data as the data is being used to provide you with TV. This is going to be a privacy nightmare, look forward to having your searches for your wifes birthday to pop-up in adverts between your shows when you sit down together to watch TV. But they will probably allow you to indicate who is watch so that this doesn't happen. so instead of trackers just following the household, they will follow each individual member of the household.
