Mazda's Secret New Engine Technology - SkyactivX | The New Car Show

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 28 มิ.ย. 2024
  • Mazda invited us out to a press day at their headquarters to show us their new engine technology. Could this be the new Mazda rotary engine? We didn't know!
    Turns out it was their new Skyactiv technology --specifically SkyactivX. While we were a little bummed it wasn't the rotary, our dismay was alleviated as we started to learn all about this impressive technology. This [largely] SPARKLESS engine relies on insanely high compression in coordination with a slew of other engineering marvels to maintain a stable gasoline ignition. Zoom zoom muchacho.

    Haha, you’re a master James!! This was great. Since, at 4:27, you said you think that most is correct (which it is) I thought I’d help ya out. It actually never runs in HCCI (homogeneous charge) mode, as it always uses a spark. Sometimes it’s just spark ignition, sometimes SPCCI. But the important thing is that they always use a spark to so that they can control exactly when combustion occurs. Kaboom. Kapow! Cancun. Knowledge. 👌👌

    ok hear me out, Mazda should make a turbocharged HCCI rotary hybrid diesel engine.

    • @BenignStatue71
      @BenignStatue71 5 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      1. We do not inject diesel via ports/valves (Port Fuel Injection, PFI; or Multi-point Fuel Injection, MPI), we inject directly into the cylinder (Direct Injection, DI). HCCI is a Port Fuel Injected system. This method of combustion is just running a Gasoline engine so it "diesels" (runs without a spark, which is otherwise considered "abnormal combustion," which is bad in a regular, conventional engine). MPI would be less efficient in a diesel engine; Direct Injection offers better fuel economy than MPI when considering both standard Diesel and Spark-ignited Gasoline engines. The theory of running an engine using what we still call "abnormal combustion" isn't new, but actually getting it to work is the new technology.
      2. Mazda's Rotary design isn't exactly very efficient. It's light, and it has a fair amount of power for it's weight, but as a rotary, there are far better Wankle designs, namely which reduce wear on the Apex Seals. There are far better ways to lubricate the engine, other than using dirty, used engine oil basically dumped into the intake like a carburetor, and then have fuel injected later on. The most common way to fix the lubrication issue in a Mazda engine is to premix Two Stroke engine oil with the fuel, which unlike conventional motor oil, is designed to be burned. There is a prototype diesel rotary from LiquidPiston, but their design for rotaries are not like Mazdas, and are much smaller. That being said, technically nothing stops you from enlarging the parts and attempting to build a larger one. It's worth noting, however, that their prototype is just that - a prototype, which doesn't even contain a cooling system. It's just a proof of concept.

      CeSayrise Yup deffo, German engineering is a myth, whilst it's correct and impressive to a certain degree I guess, the phrase "German engineering" is also glorifying that a more complex system=better. Even though it hinders system reliability heavily and is an expensive maintenance nightmare. Hence why the Germans lost WW2 because their tanks, whilst impressive, were unreliable, hard to maintain and expensive. And thus is why the Soviet T-34 and American M4 sherman were better suited for the battles in WW2.

      Justin Noker it also helps that most of our electricity is created by coal and not my solar or wind and even if it was, solar and wind have a much larger effect on our environment than gas or coal. They ruin our environment and are costing us money because our government is deciding to pay anyone who use these sources. So it’s good they’re aiming for efficiency

    • @TotoGeenen

      Toto Geenen They recently confirmed that the rotary would be coming back, but as a range extender for an electric hybrid engine. They seem to have concluded that, in their research, the rotary simply can't be made efficient because it needs so much oil because of the high heat and internal rotational speeds it reaches.

    • @TotoGeenen

      Maybe i'm being too optimistic, but I can't help get the feeling that Mazda is using the whole range extender thing as an opportunity to shovel tons of money into rotary R&D

    That’s awesome man! Can’t wait to see how the longevity of HCCI engines works out.

  • @chadbrochify
    @chadbrochify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    HCCI stands for Homogenous Charge Compression ignition not High Compression Combustion Ignition.
    Homogenous Charge means the fuel is premixed with Air before compression unlike Stratified Charge which means the fuel is sprayed into compressed air.
    Diesels are SCCI (Stratified Charge Compression Ignition) and Traditional Gasolines are HCSI (Homogenous Charge Spark Ignition)

    • @youfoundisaac
      @youfoundisaac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I remember watching Mad Max (the first one I think) and I remember the special intercepter being called "the last of the V8s". For a while that made me sad because I thought that one day that might be true.
      But now it turns out I'll probably end up seeing the last V6 :'-(
      Honda's new turbo 4 is too small for the Accord; but to my knowledge, no one is planning a new 6 cyl, and in fact most manufacturers are designing V6 replacements >:-(

    • @danielwilliams8533
      @danielwilliams8533 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      youfoundisaac Just the cycle of evolution my man. Nobody wanted to see the coal engines go away, but gas took its place no problem. Hybrids and super efficient gas engines are the turn of the tide. Nothing to be afraid of. Performance will always be aspect of transportation as long as the demand is there.

    • @danielwilliams8533
      @danielwilliams8533 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CeSayrise When countries have to have an MPG average, the fuel efficient cars allow the manufacturer to produce performance cars, so ya, the Prius allows a lot of V8s to be made today. Also check you comment before hitting send. I can barely understand that mess of a thought.

      you cant save the rotary, it is the two stroke engine of the car world. less parts and smaller engine producing much more power to weight than any other engine but with less reliability due to the design focused entirely on making power. the main problem is the fact that the rotary burns oil which is a massive problem for emissions regulations which is why it would have been stupid to continue working with this engine.

      Almost every Mazda since 1986 till had a system that resonates the air around 4K RPM. Porsche, the Audi R8 and probably a few other manufacturers use this technology to some degree.
      Most people change out their air intakes on Mazdas when they modify them. This renders the VRIS useless and then no kick at 4K.
      If you modify Mazdas while still keeping the factory intake the results are usually much better.
