How to Arrive at an Indian Airport at 2AM (SIM CARD, SCAM, UBER)

- I show you how to arrive at an Indian airport for the first time, how to get a SIM card, and how to avoid scammers and get to your hotel safely.
If you want to travel safely and confidently in India, get my Quick-Start Safety Guide at indiasurvivalg.... Read it on the plane before you arrive in India.
We start as I land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India. I landed at 2AM in the morning after a long 19-hour journey from my home of New Zealand. I've arrived at the Delhi International Airport countless times, same with Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
The first step after you exit the plane is to head to Immigration where they'll check you have the correct VISA. Some travellers to India can get a VISA on Arrival and others will need to get their VISA in advance from their country of residence. Then I go through Duty-Free Shopping, pick up my bags, then finally through Indian Customs.
After this, I show you how to get an Indian SIM card in India at the airport. Then I show you how to get to your hotel safely from the airport with Uber or the Pre-Paid Taxi Stand outside the airport.
While we travel throughout the New Delhi International Airport, I give you the history behind the famous name, Indira Gandhi, that the airport is named after.

I chose the prepaid taxi when I landed at India. Then we were told the road to the hotel was closed. We were being left at a shoplot place with a signage written "Ministry of Tourism", in which a dude from that "ministry" claimed to have called our hotel and said that our hotel was closed.
He then offered us another hotel with "good price". We walked away, knowing that it's a scam, and walked into an ice cream shop nearby. The kind shopper helped us to call a taxi and the taxi brought us to the hotel safely.
We were lucky in a way I would say
Hey Karl. I went to India in 2014 with 2 of my friends. To be honest we didn’t have the best time. We all got sick, people kept staring at us, and we learned after that people took more money from us then required. We should’ve planned it more better. I want to come back to India in 2020 to change my mindset because I know that India is a beautiful country. It’s just gonna be hard to convince my bros.
Hey Theo. Please come back. These videos will help you avoid the bad 🙏
We also face such situations in India when we go on a tour to some Indian states..once they find out that we do not belong to local area...they charge us more and try to loot as much money as possible for them..
Having said that, things would be much easier compared to 2014..as online transactions and services have increased and most of the things you can get via online route..rather than scammers.
Welcome to Kerala too, God's own country.Revisit India , at kerala .You guys will feel it hard & sad to go back.
I highly recommend avoiding Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Pls, travel outside those overcrowded and dirty places. It's full of scammers. You should travel further north. OR If you have already been to North India, then come to south India, it's totally a different side to India and it will change your mindset. It's way more tropical, clean and developed.
india is beautiful place but people are not honest

You deserve a LOT more subscribers!! You're a perfect guide for a foreigner to learn about India...what I like about is your neutral approach about India...you don't sugarcoat things to impress Indian nationalists, neither you're critical of India comparing it to western nations...your videos are very informative even for Indians
@karl rock, i came from Melbourne Australia and did the exact same things u did. I got tricked into getting taxi for 1000 rupees to Mahipalpur. Instead i got an Uber for less than half the price.
Beware of Airtel scams too! They will try to charge you 900 rupees for a 300 rupee SIM.
Also Airtel only give numbers for 90 days even if your visa lets you stay for 180 days. They cancel the number and take the money along with it despite them confirming the extension
but i don't think that they scam someone in the airport
What? No. Sim cards are free here in India. The only catch is it's mandatory to recharge it when you get it. You only pay the amount you want to recharge.
Susan Hopkinson please give me some advice. I always have problems in getting a phone
I am an indian but i don't buy sim card.. We indian only need Aadhar card, or election id 😂😁 thats it
My first time in India as a solo woman traveller I arrived but my transfer was NOT there! Some random local from the plane was attempting to help and waited with me for 40 mins. Still no sign of the driver. He then offered to just take a taxi with me to help. I broke all the rules in trusting him but in the end he paid for the taxi (didn’t let me pay) then escorted me in the hotel and told off the staff for leaving me stranded! I was very lucky. P.s this was also around 2am..

Karl the wonderful Brother-in-law of India
Good advice Karl. Its the same at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (Kolkata). We are lucky in that my sister in law generally collects us, but it doesn't stop the offers to "carry your bags" as soon as you clear the baggage area which are inevitably linked to expensive taxis. Like you, we are polite but firm (though my wife's Hindi and Bengali comes in very useful) I recognise that jazzy carpet in the opening sequence having changed at Delhi en route to Kolkata once :)
Yes. Some of the carpets have been removed as passengers were complaining about difficulty in pulling the luggage. I kinda of love the carpets though, the Changi Airport Singapore feeling. 😍
Taxi scams are one of the most popular tourist scams all over the world, unlicensed taxis shouting taxi outside the airport, metered taxis "forgetting" to turn the meter on, trying to take you to different places, or taking unnecessary detours are all common. Sadly this is true even in developed nations where the rates are already high enough to begin with and there is no need for this crap.
@@seraphina985 yes, scammers are everywhere!
Some of your videos about india are like you are going to a WAR ZONE(just saying), i've been to india last year and it was a smooth , beautiful trip! NO such serious problem at all. Just like any other country!
I'm very pleased you had a smooth experience 👌
It's a warzone for some people who aren't used to so much chaos and so many people.
Yup we are not aliens lol

@@kishore369 to a person living in the south of India, going to Delhi is akin to going to a war-zone, esp when it is at night; if you were at all stranded due to flight cancellations/delays, it would be a nightmare for sure in finding the appropriate accommodation just for a few hours! touts everywhere!
i don't call it a war zone, what do you expect when you are going to country with 1.2 Billion people, obviously its gonna be a chaos in some places, but those places are very limited and less, as far as i know!
The foreigners line was just as short when my family and I arrived at 9am. Not a big line for us non Indian nationals. BUT if you hold an Indian passport then rip you that line is LONG AF.

How much of shame it is that travellers require a guide to feel safe in India. It so sad being Indian, the only thing I did was educated a Canadian from not getting scammed in future.
All countries need a guide. You don't just walk into a country without knowing about their culture. In some countries you need to be extra safe...

Hi Karl, I am an Indian, living in NZ. I really like your videos. Your observations and understanding of Indian way of life in India are amazing but I want to give constructive feedback about one particular thing you mentioned in this video i.e. Don't tip the taxi drivers.
Please don't give a direct statement like that, instead leave it upto the viewer to decide whether to tip or not. Not all taxi drivers in India would want to rip off customers. Just like everywhere else India also must have its own mix of good and bad people, unfortunately the ratio of bad people might certainly be high in India, especially in a big and hardcore city like Delhi or Mumbai but if you come across a good, honest professional you shouldn't be afraid to reward them with a small tip. I can understand you don't tip them because you are basically a resident of India now but when tourists see your video, let them decide if they want to share their happiness by tipping honest & hardworking people in India or not. I recently visited USA for a month and the ridiculous tipping culture over there blew my mind. Forget about taxi / uber drivers, even pizza delivery drivers EXPECT tips from you and that is after you've already paid $5-7 delivery fee for your pizza. When those cashed up Americans come to India to travel, if they tip even Rs.50 (which would be a very very generous tip by the way) its still less than a dollar for them and in return the honest hardworker feels better and appreciated about his ethics. These hard working people don't get any rewards or lucrative fares from the locals anyway and in a dog eat dog workplace do you think they get to cream naive Westerners all day long? Sometimes, they might even be reliant on getting tips or big fare from certain cashed up tourists to actually make something more than basic living wage.
I hate this mentality of looking down on bottom level workers and bargaining with them for absolute rock-bottom prices, especially in an extremely competetive market like in India. Whereas there would be so many shark companies / big name products literally charging an arm and a leg to their consumers. So, as a social media influencer, please be more positive and respectful about those day to day strugglers everywhere and infact promote such gestures of appreciation instead of telling viewers not to be generous to such workers. Thank you.
This is helpful. I’m an Indian but didn’t know this. I’ve been away from my motherland fir so long. I’m going in December thru Delhi. Delhi was different decades ago.
I have an international plan where i can use my data for free as well as texting in 210 countries. As far as Uber i use the app, and Apple Pay if at all possible
I of course don't know if you are planning to visit india, but I still wanted to tell you this
1. Use paytm instead of apple pay as most people in India use android.
2. Use ola instead of uber , because it's cheaper and as it is indian it is available in more cities.
@@digililygirl3315 i don’t plan on visiting india. Well not anytime in the future. I prefer to use Apple Pay because it’s the most encrypted payment method that is safe and secure (assuming of course it’s available). And compared to the U.S Uber in India is dirt cheap when u convert rupees into dollars!
Amazing I remember the days when you would be lucky to leave Indra Gandhi Airport in about 3-4 hours if you were lucky, that was not more than 25-30 years back, pretty sick, and you would arrive in the middle of the night, so if you arrived at 2AM you would not have to worry too much you would be out by 5-6 AM then sit in the Airport and watch the Birds fly. @Karl Rock Your are wrong about 1984. Operation Blue Star had a wide impact on politics in India as many Sikh youths joined the Khalistan movement. Indira Gandhi was unpopular among Sikhs due to her role in the operation, which had destroyed and damaged portions of the Akal Takht and caused massive casualties among Sikh pilgrims. Sikh sensibilities were also offended at the alleged entry of army personnel with boots into the temple complex and the alleged destruction of Sikh scriptures and manuscripts in the temple library that caught fire due to explosives used during the operation. Sikhs like myself don't like her also because she kept on challenging our leader Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He and his followers are at the Golden Temple to defend it.
