In all my years playing this, I had no idea the trumpets actually take a backseat in so much of this piece. Trumpets are usually the foreground of things! Of course the trumpet really gets to shine at the end with the horse. One time in a band, we had the entire trumpet section do the horse sound. I think it was great.

For how old this concert band arrangement is, I'm surprised how common it is. In my band we use the originals from the mids 50s. They are full of notation from many generations of player and have many holes, but the music is readable enough. Amazing performance the both of you and the bells behind you.

It’s just the bass trombones that play that part, it is the hardest part in the score for us by far so the other bass trombonist in my band (I am the first) skipped out and I had to play it. It’s a shame!

That's a rather far above average performance for a high school. I had to laugh at counting a number of measures and then playing one note. I know what that's like. And this was never demonstrated any better than by comedian Pete Barbutti being "Fourth Trumpet". This is especially for trumpet players: th-cam.com/video/FnsEZ9q2hOc/w-d-xo.html
